Korsakoff’s syndrome or psychosis is a chronic non-progressive condition caused by a deficiency in thiamine, or vitamin B1, where deficits in memory are accompanied by confabulation. It was described by the Russian neuropsychiatrist, Sergei Korsakoff in 1889. It is most commonly caused by chronic alcohol use and is considered to be a type of alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD).
