Have you ever seen footage of real life driving on roads where this sort of thing was common? Car drivers, motorcyclists, and even faster trucks and buses were entirely prepared to indulge in all kinds of insane overtaking behaviour to get around the multitudes of sluggish heavy vehicles and keep up some kind of reasonable average speed. And I think if I was in a world without motorways, where most roads were like this one (or, say, the A5 or A458 through Wales), infested with traction engines and I was driving something with maybe 30 horsepower all up so every MPH was precious I'd likely end up doing the same. So it's either a strong risk of death, or be sat behind this thing doing walking pace for the next 30 minutes, only being able to pass safely right before we reach that really steep and twisty section where we'll rarely get past 2nd gear or over 30mph? ... YOLO Yeah, no, the roads are much safer these days than when these guys were common. Far, far fewer annual deaths and serious injuries despite a huge surge in passenger-miles. A steady flow at a swift but reasonable speed where no-one's getting frustrated enough that they can be bothered to try passing, or trying to carry too much speed into the corners so they can come out the other side without facing down a lengthy drag back up to cruising speed because they have bugger all accelerating power, is way less risky than the alternative.

Yes, I thought quite a few of the car drivers had seriously noted that. I live in Devon and see the usual number of tourists avoiding our roadside hedges as they hurtle blindly around the countryside. The number of SUVs makes for problems as they turn our byways into single lane roads. Like most of us down here we have a few 'Devon pinstripes' on the nearside of our little Peugeot, mainly due to giving way to these massive fashion statements. Nice to see vehicles that don't need to give way. It was funny to note that this hilly and windy road, in Cornwall I presume, was also really flat after the passage of so many road rollers.
