Before Traore came to power, Burkina Faso had suspended relations with North Korea in 2017 to conform to UN Security Council sanctions over Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program. Similar to what most countries did, thereby making North Korea isolated. However, in May 2023, in a move to further distance itself from the West after kicking out France, President Traore announced plans to resume diplomatic relations with North Korea. This announcement was made by the country’s Foreign Affairs Minister at the time, Olivia Rouamba, who said that the decision would allow the two countries "to maintain exemplary bilateral cooperation in several areas”. The Minister also added that the governments of Burkina Faso and North Korea will reportedly be focusing on military equipment, mining, healthcare, agriculture, and research. And, to cement the deal, a new North Korean ambassador to Burkina Faso, Chae Hui Chol, was appointed. Traore’s decision to ally with North Korea, which is considered a threat by the West has no doubt been a shock to the West and it reflects his resolute stance against Western allies.
Now, just like Traore, Russian President Putin has also shocked the West with its decision to ally with North Korea. Putin’s decision is even more serious than that of Traore because as you know Russia is considered an enemy of the West and the mere notion that Russia and North Korea, another country considered a threat by the West, have entered an alliance together, is not just shocking but also scary. Just two days ago, President Putin paid a visit to North Korea to visit its leader, Kim Jong Un. Although this visit was the first time Putin visited North Korea in twenty-four years, relations between both countries have been growing since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war. And, according to some reports, North Korea has been providing Russia with weapons in return for Russian technological expertise. However, both countries have always denied such arms transfers.
