I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Wise on a cruise ship in 1985. What a wonderful and humble man I found him to be. It’s no wonder that he was such a great film maker. He worked with all the big stars of the day and I know they all respected and trusted him. RIP Mr Wise. You brought us outstanding films. Thank you.

Oh absolutely! When awards shows were awards shows. Acceptance speeches were kept short and to the point. No fancy production numbers. The winners were honored and very happy to receive these awards. And there were no political and social statements in their acceptance speeches either. This is what awards shows should be. To honor achievement in the entertainment industry. They are not to be used to attack Trump and all other conservatives and to air their support for these liberal, leftist, and Socialist causes as well.

I didn't know that Arthur Penn was considering Wood for Bonnie And Clyde; Jane Fonda recently said that she lobbied for the role. Redford and Wood became good friends after co starring in This Property Is Condemned, however, I think that Fonda was perfect in Barefoot. With respect to Goodbye Columbus, Ali MacGraw really nailed the Brenda role in that film and made the movie.
@MrImiller07

I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Beymer. Wood evidently didn't want him cast in the role of Tony; there was no real chemistry between the two. Beatty would have been fine. I think that Robert Wagner was also under consideration before their separation.

"The Hustler", was perfectly cast. Even bit parts by Michael Constantine, Vincent Gardenia, and especially Murray Hamilton, were done to perfection. That's very interesting; I think that Wood would have been excellent as the character ultimately portrayed by Mary Tyler Moore in Redford's Ordinary People. She had started to do superb work in various television dramas including the mini series based on From Here To Eternity and she unquestionably would have continued to mature as an actress; wasn't she going to do a stage production of Anastasia?

She was quite good in Gypsy as was Russell. Apparently there was a lot of carrying on when Merman did not get picked for the film. That face was not meant for the big screen and Wood is also really good in West Side Story too. Proper Stranger was a minor hit with 5 nominations. Had it been released at the end of 65 or 66 instead of 63 it would have found a larger audience. Supposedly she turned down Bonnie and Clyde, Barefoot in the park and Goodbye Columbus due to some therapy needs at the time

Streisand has campaigned for several years to star as Mama Rose in a new film adaptation of "Gypsy"; she tried to obtain the rights from Arthur Laurents, the author, who also scripted "The Way We Were", unsuccessfully. With his death, the project has been re-activated. I'm sure that she sees this as a potential Oscar winning role, and has no intention of relinquishing the part to Meryl Streep; beyond that, Streisand has the singing chops to play the role originated by Merman.
@selma1930

Gypsy is far from the mess many claim it to be. The mama role is essentailly the same as Auntie Mame for which Roz was nominated. Wood was charming as ever and evolved throughout the film and of course the film was a box office hit. Wanna talk more musical dogs, watch Camelot or On A Clear day. Did Jackie Suzanne fight for Merman as Helen lawson in Valley of the Dolls and maybe lost out but then Hayward was a stunning woman and an Academy Award Winner. Theres No Bus Like Show Business!!~

Warren Beatty had also considered Leslie Caron for Bonnie And Clyde; he probably gravitated towards those actresses that he was involved with at the time. He wasn't enamored with Faye Dunaway, however, she ultimatel turned out to be a perfect choice with a career making role. Lee Remick would have been great in Redfod's film; I believe that she became ill with cancer at the time that Ordinary People was made.Now that Gypsy is being re-made with Streisand, I bet that Anne Hathaway is cast.

I know that there were behind the scenes conflicts in making West Side Story, however, it's curious that Jerome Robbins, who choreographed all of the memorable dance sequences, was not on stage, nor was Bernstein and Sondheim, who wrote the music and lyrics. Beatty prouced BONNIE AND CLYDE, so it was he who wooed Wood for the role, not Penn. She turned it down because her therapist cautioned against becoming involved with Beatty again, even professionally. Redford had originally wanted Lee Remick for ORDINARY PEOPLE, considered Wood, but ultimately thought casting Moore against type was the way to go--and, boy, was he right. She was stunning. However, I always thought the role Wood have done brilliantly was the lead in AN UNMARRIED WOMAN.

The list of actors or actresses that sang or did not sing in movies is probably very close. Yes there are Oscar ,mistakes but WSS is NOT one of them. Singing in the Rain was a total box office bomb.Research further and you will discover the facts. Typical MGM BS and by the late 50's MGMs and their musicals were heading to a downward spirals the public wised up and they could see the same on TV for free. Want to talk musical dogs, watch Gigi. Wood tried for Ordinary People but didnt get it.

Leslei would have been a major mistake. She was basically through after Is Paris Burning. Streisand is no longer box office and should only direct Gypsy. The only way that film could work would be with Streep as the mother and Gaga as Gyspy otherwise big time mistake that will joing Nine, The Producers, Rent, Rock of Ages and Phantom as musical bombs.

Except that Streisand is through as a box office star and Streep can wipe the ground with her in any acting role. Oh and yes Stresiand can no longer sing they way she once did but at 70 plus who can? Sinatra couldnt but the fans stayed true but Movie fans are much tougher and have bid fond adue to Streisand a long time ago except in maybe ensemble fluff like Fockers where she is in a suppporting role. Rise fired Robbins I believe or he quit after all the dance sequences were in the can. Robbin's contributions certainly made that film as no other musical has such great musical #'s. But on artistic stuff like movies there always seem to be fights. My one disappointment with the film is Beymer. I heard that tested Beatty based on his work in Splendor with Natalie Wood and can not understand how they passed on Beatty. Natalie had no use for Beymer, so it has been said?

It's too bad that KZitem allows such ignorant people to comment on subjects they know nothing about. I guess that's the price we pay for freedom of speech. Singin in the Rain (please at least get the title correct) was among the top 10 box office hits of 1952 and made very best film list that year. The list of the great musical stars who were dubbed is next to ZERO. Period. Anyone could have played those parts in WSS and instead we got 4 people dubbed who couldn't sing. Pathetic. Fits you!

You really are ignorant about movies and much else. I've lived in NYC for over 50 years, fool. "Most" actors do sing in films. You are completely wrong. Ever hear of Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Rex Harrison, Yul Brynner, Julie Andrews, Shirley Jones, Robert Preston, Judy Garland, and on and on. All sang in their films. Very few people were dubbed and WSS remains the only film where EVERYONE was dubbed. Why bother making it? Oscar doesn't mean quality; lots of duds won Oscars.

Obsessions are sad things and are also patently obvious. You are obsessed with this movie. Why not get out and experience the world from beyond your TV and computer? It's a very sick thing to be obsessed with one mediocre movie as much as this one. Better to be obsessed with a really great film like Casablanca, if you're going to have an obsession.
