Western Maryland Railway Footage (1950s-1970s)
This rare amateur footage features the Western Maryland Railway (W.M.), a Class I railroad that operated in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania from 1852 to 1983. The W.M. was primarily a coal hauling and freight railroad, but also operated a small passenger train service.
The W.M. became a property of the Chessie System holding company in 1973, and its independent operations ceased in 1975, when its lines were abandoned in favor of parallel Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) lines. In 1983, the W.M. was fully merged into the B&O, which later merged with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad to form the Chessie System in 1987. The Chessie System was renamed CSX Transportation in 1991.
This video was transferred from 50 feet of regular 8mm film and offers a glimpse of the W.M. in action during the 1950s and 1970s.
