Western Wall (Part 1 to 5) is found on this Playlist: • The Western Wall
The Davidson Center gives a historical and archaeological introduction to the Jerusalem Archaeological Park. The Archaeological Park consists of the other 10 percent of the Western Wall with Robinson’s Arch, the Herodian Street, and huge stones from the ruins of the Temple Mount.
There is also the Umayyad Palace around the Temple Mount. It was built by the Muslim Umayyad rulers (7th and 8th Century CE).
More recently unearthed (in the 1980s) are the Southern Steps, sometimes called the Rabbi Steps or Teaching Steps by Christians. They are found at the southern side of the Temple Mount. Although they lead today to a wall with a bricked up gateway, at the time of Jesus, visitors would have ascended these steps to the public entrance to the Court of Gentiles, the outer courtyard of the Temple complex. Mary and Joseph would have ascended these steps when they went to present the Christ child in the Temple, and Jesus certainly climbed these steps during his visits to the Temple. The gospel writers tell of Jesus teaching regularly at the Temple, and these steps are a likely place for him to have done so.
