A murder, this time by choice. What is truly beautiful about that last scene is that Dolores is given a choice... but not really. Even though it was her first decision after becoming fully conscious, her path was still being predetermined by Ford. It was either kill him and start the narrative he'd authored, or continue to remain a slave in a place worse than hell. A fate no intelligent being, sane or insane, would choose given the choice. Can you really call it a choice at that point? There is no middle path to take, no half measures are allowed, and no quarter can be given. Find the courage to fight or die a million cowards's deaths. Considering how much this show has focused on whether free will actually exists, I thought it was quite poetic of the writers to end it this way. Even if she hadn't taken the shot they were already surrounded by an army of woke hosts, but it is important that she made that choice that she was forced into making due to circumstances beyond her control. The belief that you have free will might be more import than determining whether it actually exists.

Yea I hope we see more of William, such a good actor and the character development has been outstanding! But I also think the way they wrapped it up in the finale would show otherwise. It seemed super quick in comparison to his character over the last 9 episodes. The only thing I could see them go further into, is like when he gets home and how he kicks ass and takes names! Just my opinion though! :D

Why paint Ford as a hero? It's equally likely that he only woke up the hosts as revenge for being kicked out. It doesn't seem that his motive was "To right his wrongs" but "to maintain control". I mean this is his life work, and someone as egotistic as Ford is not just going to give it up... The show producers said season one was defined by control... So Ford may have concluded that "If I am not to control my world, no one will... Myself? I will become music" (music of course being a metaphor for his life's work).
@HaxDogma

I honestly believe Ford was a good person in the end. He lost his buddy and then felt the suffering Arnold felt, but the hosts needed time to "know your enemy". When Dolores passes the maze the first time, Arnold questions her about the voice he's been trying to get her to hear. She says no. Well when Ford leaves in the present and Dolores sits in the same room her/Arnold would sit in. She finally realizes the voice she is meant to hear is her own. This is what took time to accomplish! Just my opinion though! :D

If Westworld has taught me anything, it is that there is no such thing as "heroes" or "villians". Whitehat or Blackhat. We all have shades of both good and evil. Ford was not all one thing or another. He was only human.
@STUCASHX
7 жыл бұрын
Ford also said some very negative things about mankind during the show though. If it's true that Ford had spent so many years working towards creating host conscience, it doesn't make sense that he could wake them because he was being edged out, as that was relatively recent. I believe he saw concious hosts as the next evolution when he said "Man is the best he will ever be". The path to consciousness was founded in pain, loss and torture according to the story. If Ford was ensuring the hosts endured these things over and over again it's feasible that his motives were only to awaken them. Even killing other humans to protect their awakening. The fact that he was being "retired" meant that it was now or never for the hosts. (The board were going to "simplify" them) I don't think Ford is a hero to humans, quite the contrary, he is definitely a villain to humans. But maybe Ford would be remembered as a hero the the hosts in the end. I fact, Fords explanation of his past actions was told to hosts, not people. So if the show painted him as a hero it was from a hosts perspective. [mind blown] :D

Who was Ford building in the basement when Teresa went downstairs...Another Ford. :) Well, that would be me 'story Meta gaming'. Great writing. Great acting. I disliked the apparent lack of security. Cameras seem to be almost non existent or never watched. In a glass walled environment, that seems ridiculous. And the gun play at the end was very poorly executed. Trained security staff not shooting first and standing in the open like a 1960s movie's American soldiers. But my gripes are tiny compared to the story itself and I can't wait for the next installment. Thanks for your channel. Great stuff.

One thing i still dont understand. Bernard tells Maive that the loss of her daughter is her cornerstone, an event in which her entire foundation , morals and personality is built from. But how can that be her cornerstone if that memory is from a previous build? How/Why would they build her character around a foundation of a memory shes not supposed to know about?
@theSweedio
7 жыл бұрын
You've already seen them replace hosts with different ones when they feel the need, in what happened with Dolores' father. Maeve was probably a different character, then when her first narrative was shut down they gave her a new character and storyline. They may have decided to use what happened to her and her daughter as a cornerstone because it would be a powerful one, and it was already in her head at the time so they just had to wipe everything else. From a business point of view, saving time on building a new cornerstone would be desirable.

why is felix not a host! i always found Ford to be a cynical person,why does he trust Felix when it comes to handling Maeve?
@sophrapsune
7 жыл бұрын
Felix is very likely a host. Maeve's belief that he is human is in error, just as her belief that she is not following a programmed narrative is in error. Bernard's insight into Maeve's decision-making demonstrates that she is not a reliable attester. Felix is a host whose entire purpose is to facilitate the "Escape" narrative. In a sense, he is acting out a meta-narrative: the "broader game". No human would have the motive to help Maeve over and over in the way he has, except perhaps to help smuggle Intellectual Property out of the park. But why expose a human to the physical risks of the Escape narrative, when a human with those sorts of admin privileges could just programme a (recyclable) host Felix to absorb all the risk?

HaxDogma, it was no accident that a mother and daughter were sitting across from Maeve. They were needed to trigger Maeve's pre-programmed decision to return to the park. Maeve needed to return to the park in order that the bag full of Ford's Intellectual Property be left on the monorail train. The entire scene was a pre-programmed narrative to aid smuggling IP out of the park. The question then is: who was the narrator-programmer of that storyline? Was it Ford, or was it a Delos hack? Or does the Delos board actually include hosts whose narrative was controlled by Ford? After all, in abandoning the "real world" for the park, the President of Delos (William) has no strong personal motive to smuggle the IP out.

A. A human Ford gave his life so that the hosts could evolve with their Reveries, free of new human programming. But, just as he did with Arnold, Ford was building a host replica of himself to continue helping the hosts. In part, the real story will be determined by whether the magnificent Anthony Hopkins can be signed for another season. On the other hand, there is no reason why the new, host replica of Ford is actually given a different physical appearance.

I wish you'd address the question of, who is the middle man in the photo of "the good old days"? The photo originally shows just this man (presumed to be Arnold) and Ford, but when it's revealed that Bernard is Arnold, shows 3 people: the middle man, Ford, and BernArnold. It's worth noting that Ford and Arnold look relatively out of place in the image compared to the middle man, and that these's a yin-yang symmetry with hands - Arnold has both hands in his pockets, ford has both hands out, and the middle man has one hand in, one hand out. So far, do we have any hints from the writers at who the middle man is? My theory is that Arnold never existed, he's just Ford's backstory, and that this man was the original creator. The only proof we have of Arnold's existence is from Ford and the hosts, and Ford seems characteristically inclined to repeatedly tell Bernard his [back]story of what became of old Arnold.
@SilverStarGazer
7 жыл бұрын
Eric B. It's Ford's father.. probably the host who was in the cottage. That's why Bernard asks him in the cottage if he's Arnold, because Ford told Bernard that the man was Arnold, when in reality, Bernard couldn't see the whole picture because he's programmed to ignore these things.
@STUCASHX
7 жыл бұрын
It was Fords Father. Ford had built host versions of his family and younger self so we actually get to see him as a host and in the photo. I do not know the significance of Fords Father being in that photo though, but a host version is in the park. Maybe more background will be revealed in 2018
@HaxDogma

So the man in the middle of the picture from what we've been told, is Ford's father! However I find it REALLY odd he would be in the picture if it was Ford/Arnold's project. If he really was Ford's father and he was apart of the project, why haven't we heard of him more yet? So while I haven't fully figured this one out yet, it's something I've been thinking about!

Most certainly could be, but if you think back to when Ford is describing his father... the relationship was skewed, talking about his drinking and so forth. Which makes it weird now that I think about it, that he would have a picture of his father on his desk. IDK, part of me also thinks it was just so we the audience would see another body when Bernard first sees the picture. If in the early episodes he goes "here Bernard" and hands him a picture of just Ford, we would know right away Bernard couldn't see it and give away him being a host. Man I'm so torn now, lmao!

I still can't fully understand why Dolores killed Ford. She didn't have to. Ford, in the end, payed for his sins and breathed life into the hosts. I would think that Dolores would of had reverence towards Ford as her creator. In the end, yes, Dolores had to endure hardships basically being a slave but this was the only way for Ford to give her consciousness with what resources he had. I've asked this question on other channels and I've heard a lot of speculative answers. Some good and some bad. I can't stop thinking about this. Would anybody care to chime in, please.

I think Dolores and Bernard understood that he intended to die one way or another. He presented Dolores with a real gun and he allowed the cargo hosts to attack using real guns. Dolores is also part villian. Making a spectacle by killing Ford at his toast was sending a message to hosts and humans. Seems clear that Dolores will not see anything redeemable in humans. Maive, on the other hand, was helped all along the way by Felix, and will probably have a more compassionate view.

I understand William found himself. If Dolores is constantly trying to recall and revisit places to make sense of memories over the 30 years, did William simply give up on her? Like he was tired of helping her recall memories? Kind of like 50 First dates? Was it a trade off of persuing their relationship with an ever forgetful mind, to exploring himself and the depths of the rest of WW.

I've been confused as to why William/Man in Black kept finding maze symbols (like on the inside of a scalp!) Were these just sort of easter eggs left around the park for possible hosts to discover or had Ford placed these intentionally to send William on a wild goose chase?

Makes you wonder how much of Delores' journey was consciousness and how much was scripted though. She asked Teddy to take her to the place where the mountains meet the sea, that's where Ford wanted her, where he told her to go for the "New narrative". So he planned to have her at the church at the same time as Teddy, so he could take her there before she died. He planned to have her run into William to put the whole thing into order. Ford told William that the maze wasn't for him, but I think it explicitly was, he was a crucial part in Fords plan and without him the hosts that were meant to find it would never have started the journey. I don't know if she's truly conscious, even in killing Ford. We saw her nearly kill herself when she remembered the original slaughter, she may have killed Ford because she was remembering herself killing Arnold. She may have just accessed a build that allows her to kill her creator, rather than writing her own paths.

holy shit, I don't know if this theory has been said yet but I noticed this as I rewatched the finale. When ford says his final few words and then sips his champagne before he dies, his voice sounds robotic, and that got me thinking, when Theresa was killed we assumed the body that Ford was making was to replace her, but what if he made a Host copy of himself to take his spot at the end, and the real Ford is in hiding somewhere? I know this sounds crazy but i'd like to know what you all think.

I dont think Ford actually died, in the scene where Bernard kills the director, they show that there is a machine creating a "cylon" or another host. They dont really explain who they are making, they just say its slower than others. It looked almost done, and it was about 4-5 days from the finale. I think Ford created a host of himself to create the effect so he could take back control of the park.

B. Lung That's an interesting idea, but how could the park be on an island? No island looks like that. I'm not saying that it's not possible, but I just wonder how they could have an island that big with multiple parks on it. Still a cool concept though.

As much as I will miss the Great Anthony Hopkins, I believe Ford is dead. And should stay dead. Edit: not to sound harsh or anything. I just think his story arc was perfectly concluded. I think bringing him back now, would really make him God (resurrection from death!?). He dies because he's "only human". Hosts do not die, they made that point pretty clear I think. That's a major distinction. I wish I was a Host :(

I'm guessing the writers are treating that as a narrative branch, just like host code. Depending on whether or not they can get Anthony Hopkins back for more seasons.

As much as I loved the character, I dont't think he will be back. Anthony Hopkins is one of the most accomplished actors working today (also he's not that young). He probably only took the role because he wouldn't be tied up in a contract over several years. Also he had a complete and great storyarc, bringing him back would take from the impact his death had. That being said, I still wouldN#t mind seeing him in future seasons. His character was that great.

Great, great video. I too was wondering why Ford made Bernard kill himself. This coupled with the scene where Ford cuts that elderly hosts' face with a scalpel made me think Ford was 'against' the any host gaining sentience. Maybe that scene was just thrown in there to throw us off to his real intentions of helping them gain consciousness? Who knows.

Don't know if anyone caught this but from the second they show William in the first scene of the second episode they show his reflection in the window of the train and he's a bit "darker" looking, then they pan down to him as he currently is giving us a hint to his journey's ending.

I don't get what we are supposed to think about Logan's fate. Wouldn't the horse he was on just bring him back to civilization? The horse is a host and should be programmed not to kill people. Doesn't make any sense.
@ravenlord4
7 жыл бұрын
Logan did return to civilization. As William predicts though, Logan has become too broken to lead Delos. Imagine the scandal when a naked, beaten, and raving Logan shows up to the public and tries to blame all of his woes on "sweet innocent" William. The family would quietly send Logan away somewhere to "rest and get better" with William now heir apparent.

A key point missed: Maeve took park information out in her bag, but left it on the monorail when she decided to return for her daughter. This plays to the ultimate corporate motive of getting Ford's Intellectual Property out of the park. As much as it might seem otherwise, Maeve's decision to return was not an independent decision at all. She had no independent motive for seeking this IP, other than that it was an intrinsic part of a pre-programmed narrative. She was acting out a programmed narrative that kept her in the park, yet still smuggled IP out for a third party's benefit. Bernard truthfully told her as much. Ditto Dolores' actions in murdering Ford: all was as programmed. So there is still a master narrator, whether than be Ford or some other party. And as Ford observed in an earlier episode, humans also conduct their lives in habitual loops, so who is to stay that the programmed narratives of the hosts make them any less 'conscious' than humans? The magnificent subtlety of the Westworld script is that characters make bold claims about understanding what consciousness is, how independent their actions are, even who is human and who is not, yet the broader narrative still supports the counter-argument. The audience is invited to buy into a character's beliefs and worldview, only for the broader narrative to reveal the error of holding such firm beliefs. In this way, the Westworld script is a masterpiece of philosophical dialectic, exploring concepts as ancient as philosophy itself. That is why is it some of the best television ever produced and has the potential for as long a life as HBO cares to fund.

I certainly was sad. Ford was always the remote benefactor, and ultimately gave his own life that the hosts might be free of new human programming.
