These lovely little parcels of wet -felted soap are a great project for beginning felters, great for children and teenagers to make as a school project or fund raiser and also really good for the super elderly. For older feltmakers there is a definite joy in this as a great way of exercising your hands and fingers to keep them strong and agile.
But , more importantly , these felted soaps are a great way of extending the life of those special soaps you have been given. You know, the ones that smell great and make your bathroom smell good as well. Once you start using them, the soap stays in the wool and so does the soap's fragrance.
Did you know that wool is antibacterial? So contrary to what others might think.... Wet felted soap will never go 'off' or mouldy. Other benefits are that the soap is easier to hold in your hand as it is not slippery, the wool acts as a loofah and is great for very dirty hands and exfoliating rough skin. Most importantly... They look good and take very little time and effort to make one or lots and lots.
In this video I am trying to minimise the obvious potential loss of soap when making a felted cover for your soap. I also introduce the idea of solar felting. I will get back to you with the scientific answer but I do just Know... that wet felting projects definitely benefit from a little rest in the sun on a hot day. I have also included the idea of doing the initial stroking and massaging the felt with the project inside a zip lock bag... one that is just the right size for the soap. Using such a bag means that the project is easily contained, which is so useful for teachers or those who are dealing with a lot of children. Keeps it all contained.
As always do get in touch if you have any questions. I know you will enjoy the results and enjoy the beauty of these little fragrant parcels.
Big thank you to Chris Haugen for the music.
