This video addresses the basic costs of wet shaving and overall expected expenditures... this is a general estimate in the figures are by no means exact.
For those of us for whom we call this a hobby, I believe that "initially" when we began this journey, it was in fact to save money. What a joke that idea has become. If I really tallied the money that I have spent in the last 3 years, I would probably shit myself, however, I enjoy the hell out of a good shave and trying new products.

Someone only interested in shaving as regular grooming might still go through three or four razors during first year. Reasons could be like this: Like or dislike of twist-to-open or three-piece; razor too mild; razor too aggressive; razor broke need a new one; a very cheap razor is terrible so need a new one fast.

I did start wet shaving around 1965 with a normal gillette TTO razor and a gillette blade I did use always the same shaving soap, when I came to mexico 1971 I started using other soaps ( carbtree and evelyn sandalwood etc ) and since mach 3 came out , changed DE blades for mach 3 cartridges , but since 2020 I started again using the DE blades maybe for the reason that I bought a new razor merkur 34 C, then I began liking the scents of the soaps , and now I am really in love with the feeling of the slick and the aromas of the soaps, still looking for more , totally agree now it is a hobby also since I have time to really enjoy shaving .

For ppl that don’t want to do all the “Collecting” get a good safety razor 20 blades at a time give or take, then buy one soap at a time like Proraso Red, then when you’re finished that, try an Artisan like Sterling, then maby try some soap commander Katie’s Bubbles, Tobs. That way it won’t be expensive

$35 for 100 astras 😂. I think it's only $7 now. I think 15 Mach 3 cartridges are enough for a year. I like shaving both ways, but I definitely like how DE razors look and I prefer how my beard grows when a shave with DE. I don't know if shaving is a hobby for me, but I have a passion for it and I thoroughly enjoy the whole thing. DE or not.

@@tyfal07 I agree. I save the stupid expensive mach 3 for air travel. For around $35 you can get PolSilver or Feather blades online. Astra SP's are not a premium blade imo. They perform very very well for the price, and seem to have consistent quality, but they do not give a memorable or remarkable experience, imo. YMMV as in all things.

It's cheap as long as you don't get sucked into the hype of this soap smells great then buy finding out it doesn't appeal you--bottom line is a cheap neutrogena facial bar provides very slippery surface to shave at 2 bucks a bar or less.Unless you are at the store smelling the said soap don't get sucked into the perfect scent hunt.

IMO the fancy shave creams, lather bowls, brushes and other accessories are just not necessary. My pre shave prep includes splashing hot water to soften the beard for about 2 minutes, followed by a 1-2 minute lathering of a tiny dab of Nexxus Humectress hair conditioner to quickly moisturize and get the skin and beard lubed up super slick. Then I fill the sink with hot water and warm up a small amount of either Edge shaving gel or Cremo shave cream. Once it’s warmed up I spread it on my face for a nice warm lather. I get fantastic BBS shaves with one of my 4 DE razors & usually either Nacet or Super Iridium blades. Depending on my beard length and personal preference that day I’ll use either my Henson AL 13 mild or medium razor, Parker Variant or my Rockwell 6S. These mid level razors are the best bang for your Buck and you don’t need to spend several hundred dollars on super fancy razors. There’s nothing wrong with doing that if you enjoy it but the amount of money you spend is not necessarily going to give you a better shave. There are plenty of razors that are affordable and absolutely fantastic, you just Gotta do your own research and find the one that works best for you. You might buy a couple of razors on the way but overall it will be much more affordable than cartridge razors, and with proper technique the double edged razors provide a far superior shave with less irritation. I will never go back to buying cartridge razors ever again. The amount of money I am saving with DE Blades vs super expensive Cartridge razors far outweighs the couple hundred dollars I spent on four different razor handles. While I am sometimes tempted to splurge on a fancy expensive razor handle, so far I’ve been able to control myself and refrain from doing so.

Astra 100 pack running for about 7 bucks right now on Amazon lol. So on that end, it's so much cheaper. However, as we all know, and as you acknowledge, the average Mach 3 guy will not care to look for other things to try. Your average wetshaver is also a hobbyist, and we all have 30 razors, 40 soaps, and 18 aftershave. But as you say, it's not about money now, it's about enjoying all sorts of luxury experiences.

Great accurate comparison and explanation. I am a female and just started DE wet shaving mid-January 2018 and already a "hobbyist" given I have 3 razors, 5 brushes, and numerous samples of soaps/creams. I only bought one bottle of witch hazel, one aftershave, and one after shave balm so far. For pre-shave I have two items I will use: Neutrogena glycerin facial bar or Noxema (but those are items I already used). One of the first orders I made was a 50-pack sampler of 10 different blades (which got lost in the mail and still waiting on). I have two more different sets of sampler shave creams/soaps coming and two tubes of Nivea shave cream, and two full-sized tubs of soaps coming. Yeah, I am definitely a hobbyist now!

Your estimated costs are extremely fair. I pay $10 for 100 Astras. I compared the equate brand of Mach Carts at Walmart- I have been wetshaving for 3.5 years, I also head shave, I used 5 carts a week when I used a Mach 3.At that rate and price , my cost for 3.5 years would be over $1200 on carts-not including the hair cuts I don't pay for. Further, I have kept up with my net costs for EVERYTHING- $600- I do enjoy the hobby and in full disclosure, my 12 or so razors were bought mostly used and I shop for the best deal on my soaps and aftershaves. Even as a hobby, I saved a bunch of money.

If you are only interested in the financial end.. then yes, wet shave is the way to go... provided you stick to your original intent... which is to save money long term. What I have done so far.. and yes, it is hard not to fall into the temptation... is to buy only one soap at a time. When that one is done.. I try a new one. I purchased on razor around $30 and it should last me a lifetime. That razor is neither aggressive nor mild.. sit just right in the middle/sweet spot. Just like that.. I just buy one thing of each and use it until done. Save for the blades.. I buy sample packages until I find something I really like. At that point I will buy that particular blade by the 100 pack. Discipline is the real key to save money here.
@10floz30minutes
Жыл бұрын
The trouble in selecting a razor is, you just don't know until you TRY one. Problems can be: Is it too mild? Is it too aggressive? Do you wish three-piece instead of your TTO? Do you wish a TTO instead of the three-piece? Something happened and razor brakes? But yes, ordinarily a good razor lasts a lifetime or more.

$30-ish for a DE89 - $13 for 100 Yellow Gillette Blades - $10 for a tub of Red Proraso - $20 for decent brush - $6 for witch hazel Less than $100 for an entire year or more. Stop buying over priced products from places like shave nation and others.

The DE89 I heard is a really nice razor I wish i had heard of it when i started it would have been better than what i had. Yellow Gillette blades? Not heard of those ones. I tried the Pro-Red and it worked well, scent to my nose was not that strong but good soap for sure! They have some great stuff. Brushes are sooo economical now. Esp the synths, and you if you want to drop a bit more they totally customizeable! witch hazel i love use it every time. As for the total cost, my estimations were done off the top of my head and overly done-so and done-so on purpose. This was to help drive the point that even with the higher amounts that i said it is still cheaper than using cart. razors. I have never purchased anything from Shave Nation, I hear he's a super nice guy though! Thanks for watching...

I started shaving for real when I was 16 back in 1976. I started with one of my dads Gem razors, Williams Mug Soap, and an ever-ready 200t brush, Oh and Coty Musk. Then one day in 1977 I was in a Department Store and saw a Gillett Atra for $4.95 I bought it, everything else remained the same. Then in the mid to late 80s I went to those twin blade disposable things. About a year ago I got out my Atra, ordered 200 blades on line for$28.00, and found blades for my old Gem razor as well. I was happy. THEN IT HAPPENED, I started buying other vintage razors and then new modern ones. I now have a version of every U.S. made Gillette razor ever made. I have Gem and Ever-Ready razors of all kinds not to mention brushes. and the stuff for making my own soap. Yep defiantly cheaper. lol. But all jokes aside it is much much cheaper if your buying just for shaving, But if you're a collector or hobbyist not so much.
@10floz30minutes

Cost to get started can be unpredictable during the first year of trying wet shaving. The person might want either a milder or more aggressive razor; a razor may brake upon mishandling either sooner or later; person might decide he needs to find a better blade while suspecting that a starting blade is causing trouble, so may buy a sample pack of blades.

It depends, one cartridge does not equal unlimited shaves. Most people will get 4 to 6 shaves with a single blade. The same is to be said with a standard cartridge. Either way even if you went one shave per DE blade it's still cheaper than using a cartridge that you get 6 shaves out of.

The number of shaves of both a cartridge (disposable) and a d.e. blade can be increased; just depends how you treat it and take care of it. How far upward, depends on each person. @CDShavinMurphy

Jeremy York bottom right? The two band? Why that's my van der Hagen supposedly pure boar hair brush then I got in a kit three years ago. It was my first brush I kept it more for sentimental value. I never use it. The not already fell out once I had to epoxy glue it back on. some of the hairs became so astray I actually had to trim them with a pair of scissors LOL

Honestly this video is quite misleading and you should eventually update it, even for $50 or less you can get a pretty decent set from websites, the major problem in my opinion is getting a good shaving soap that makes you enjoy shaving every day. It's very hard to get one online because you can never tell if you would like the soap and buying samples is kind of lame to me and counter productive. Razor blades are cheap as hell I don't know how you got the number $35 personas, voshkods, astras & even derby blades will work, derby blades are the cheapest I have found but I have astras. I do not know where you found a soap that cheap ($8-15?) either rarely are they good if they are that cheap, unless you didn't count the shipping. Sorry if I came off rude.

nah also a hundred pack of feather blades which are the blades that I use are $25 on Amazon unless you have Prime which not everybody does and you overnight it it is approximately 30 to $35 shipped so I'm sorry if I misled you have a good day

Majority are not costly and nobody is going to overnight blades unless they somehow forgot they were on their last pack, personally I think feather blades are a rip off but to each his own.

nah see that's the thing to each their own. People seem to forget about that here and on Facebook and in the community in general. Feather blade seem to work very well for me and very many others. And when I was adding things up I was using worst case scenario and by using worst case scenario I still prove my point that it was cheaper in the long run so I am correct. I don't feel that anything anybody does in this community is pointless or stupid I simply have my own opinions on what works for me and what doesn't which honestly change now and again. If it truly was to each their own... then why is it the Facebook pages are constantly shutting down conversations and suspending people for being too nasty or over-opinionated. I've seen it happen. If somebody says or does something that I don't agree with I simply acknowledge them and move on. In fact there even has been times when I've disregarded somebody's opinion on something and then say 6 months later or so realized that they were correct and I change something Hardware software maybe a habit or what have you. This hobby really should be to each their own and that is honestly how I try to treat it. So if feathers don't work for you that's cool, I hope whatever you using kicks ass and gives you great shaves!
