Thank you for this. I have a similar situation with an uphill repeater 60 mi away and will be installing a yagi. Not as big as your antenna but this gives me a bit more assurance I'm going the right direction and that this is possible. Also I learned something about the pvc from reading comments. Thank you all this was very helpful.

I'd really invest with some good low loss coaxial cable, that will improve even more. I went overkill with LDF550 on a 10M run with mine and it made a huge difference on 144mhz over here in the UK, so never use cheap coax!
@crowingroosterrecords568

The cheaper coax varieties are fine as long as they are short lengths of no more than 50 feet.

@@crowingroosterrecords568 until you’ve tried the ‘over the top’ versions I really wouldn’t comment as it wouldn’t be right, it’d simply be an opinion, and many opinions are based all on hearsay. The difference on an s7 signal from rg58 to LDF550 a whopping s10+ says it all on a station 200 miles away in flat band conditions on 144.135mhz it was a beacon in Kent UK and I was just north of Liverpool. So, meh 😑

Oh, and just to clarify 10m (33ft) of LDF550 to a 2m (6ft) of Ecoflex15 round the rotator, so we’ll under 50ft, if your using 50ft of coax UR wasting your time for weak station chasing.

@@sr3d-microphones If you will google to find the charts on signal loss for specific varieties of coax you will see that on short runs of 50 feet or less the difference between RG58U and the more expensive varieties like LMR 400 is rather negligible.

@@crowingroosterrecords568 I am aware of what the books say, but actually doing it for yourself and breaking through the bull of dogma I realised that there were things in books that didn’t relate to a proper setup and connectors. The signal difference over a short run of maybe 40ft brought up the signal as I said, that, for me suggests that people opinions are two a penny, whereas actual experience of doing it for yourself brings enlightenment from the dogma crap. I am talking 144mhz here and not HF. The higher up the bands you go the more feeder has an impact on your ability to hear weak stations, am using my own experience as a fundamental correctness of what the books say, and what happens in real life. HF is a totally different game altogether.

Nice looking Yagi-Uda antenna....That's a Lot of Elements on a relatively Short boom Length as usually the element Spacing is almost same as element Length or 0.20 wavelength.....
@crowingroosterrecords568
11 ай бұрын
The spacing of the elements is much closer together than the typical Yagi antenna probably a half or possibly a quarter wavelength apart I don't know as I have not measured them. The antenna throws a much wider pattern than a typical Yagi antenna and does not have as much signal rejection from the sides of the antenna compared to a typical Yagi but the antenna has about a perfect match all the way across the two meter band much better than a typical Yagi antenna.

So what is the difference between doing it horizontal vs vertical like that?
@johnkemas7344

All repeaters are using vertical polarization, most DXers' doing simplex work, SSB CW etc use horizontal polarization. Matched polarizations at both ends of a QSO are much more efficient giving higher gain round trip.

Helpful hint: mounting a Yagi on a metal pipe will result in pattern distortion, reduced gain, and in some cases, inability to get a good SWR. Mount the antenna by the reflector end, if possible, and if not mount it on a PVC pipe with a wooden broomstick inside it.

And watch out for your feedline. It should not interfere with your elements. If you use the beam horizontal the feedline will not interfere with your elements. It should make a 90 degrees angle with your elements.

@crowingroosterrecords568

I didn't measure the reflector but yes it does seem to be quite long compared to what you see on a typical Yagi antenna. The antenna throws a wider beam and does not have as much rejection to signals off the sides as your Typical Yagi antenna but what it does have is a better SWR match all across the band than a typical yagi. Rain does not affect the swr either as it does a typical yagi. The folded dipole driven element maybe has something to do with the differences between it and a typical yagi.

FM certainly is not dead! I have a single repeater in my area, mostly no other active hams for the next 100 miles. I too use a couple beams to get my signals into populated areas. Whether thats FM/SSB, or CW, sometimes even FT8 and FT4 or other deep dive noise modes. also not all yagis for VHF are cut for FM or SSB, usually its one or the other, in which case you also mount for the desired mode!

FM not dead for repeaters still best choice.. Still has the best audio quality and capture effect guarantees only one person at a time can talk even though it generates some interference with FM.
