I suscribed to your channel because I am actually planning to buy a 414A in the near future, upgrade avionics as you did and install RAM engine kit and aero mods. It will be my way of travelling with family and also to go to work in 1400nm trips every month and some times over the sea. I was thinking in installing aux tanks in the wing storage compartments. What is your fuel consumption at your best efficiency point in terms of altitude and KTAS? Thanks for answering and your plane is my dream plane.

I know our 414a did. It had a RAM V conversion that gave it water cooling. Drawback was smaller wing lockers. Radiators were on the back of the nacelles underneath.

I have some time in the 441. Fantastic airplane. In fact, it may very well be our 414A's replacement in the next two or three years. We've owned this airplane since 1999 and it's about time for something that burns kerosene. Unless it ends up being a jet, it will probably be a 441 or an MU-2

You have great taste in aircraft. Anything that is Garrett Powered. I will post pictures of the 441 as soon as it comes back to Illinois. My friend is also very well known in the MU-2 crowd. I have learned much about that airplane from him. safe flying, Brian

Who's your friend in the MU-2 crowd? I probably know, or have heard of him. And you're right! The TPE-331 is a far superior engine to the PT-6. More power, more speed, way less fuel. Not to mention double the TBO if you're operating 135.

I'm comparing this with a TBM 700C2. A friend raves about his 414. Can you discuss your altitude limitations, range, useful load on 300nm trip, and cruise speed your plane? Love the economics of the 414.
@s4aviator804
7 жыл бұрын
Simply, the TBM is going to be 85 knots faster, but its going to cost more to run, and its going to cost three to four times as much to acquire. You could buy a fleet of 414s for the price of a TBM. It has an extremely tiny cabin, much smaller than the 414. The 414 is just as comfortable flying at 5,000 feet as it is flying at 25,000 feet. Up in the 20,000 foot arena, youll get 215 true out of a RAM IV converted airplane, 225 true out of a RAM VII airplane. On a 300nm trip, youd have no issue with 5-6 adults, bags, and IFR reserves.

S4 Aviator Are you in a lot of the weather flying only up to 21,000ft given the cabin's pressure altitude constraints going higher? I'm partnering with a pilot friend on our next plane, so not too bad either way. Going up in a friend's 414a in a few weeks. Looking forward to the experience. Also curious about flying twins Vs SETP. The 414a is a great value no doubt.

What is a practical IFR range on your 414A? I was thinking about a 421C for max range as a high priority mission element - (LA to Houston) but as you pointed out in another video - the cost increase is not trivial to run the 421C.

Are you flying Houston to LA often? If so, what’s your fixed base? David Hook by any chance? I’d be interested in plane-pooling with you should you ever want some company and cost sharing. I typically fly commercial from iah or hou, but live near the Woodlands. Please let me know if interested. Thanks! Scott. (707) 365-6743

Be fair. The 421C also has the hydraulic gear, not the electric. You sorta overlooked that little fact. There's also the little matter of trailing link mains on the 421C. I'm not familiar enough with the 414 to know whether or not it has the trailing link system, but have many hours in the 421s. All of them.
@s4aviator804

I didn't "sorta overlook" anything. "Another awesome feature of the 414A and the 421 is the landing gear" were my exact words. How much more fair do you want me to be? As far as what you call the "little matter" of trailing link main gear on the 421C (which the 414A does not have), I would suggest that you be fair in how you qualify that, seeing as not all 421C's have trailing link main gear. The 421C was manufactured from 1976-1985. The 1976-1979 models had the exact same gear as the 414A, and the 1980-1985 models had the trailing link gear. The TL gear is very nice, as anyone whos ever flown it will tell you, but it's not without its tradeoffs. For example, the TL main gear is substantially heavier than the standard gear, and winglets cannot be retrofitted to a 421C unless it has the earlier, 414A style main gear. I think I was about as fair as one can be, but if you want to hear my entire discussion about the 414A vs the 421C, watch my Naples Departure video!

Wow! Wasn't trying to start a fight here. This is just a Ford vs. Chevy-type conversation. So you won't think I'm some 100 hour pilot spouting off, I spent 27 years as a USAF fighter pilot, starting in 1960. The last 20 years were in the F-111. After retiring, I started an air charter service and wound up with 7 421s, some Bs, some Cs. I retired from that with something over 20K hours in my logs. I chose the 421 because of the 375 hp available. With the work I was doing, I wanted all the steam I could get. If I lost one I could continue the flight to destination without too much concern and that was important at the time. I owned one more of the 400 series, the 411, and dearly loved that plane. Despite media comments to the contrary, VMC was actually a few knots slower than the 421. Like I said, Fords & Chevrolets. To each his own. I liked those GTSIOs. Took each and every one to TBO. So, enjoy your 414 and know I didn't intend to ruffle anybody's feathers. Col. R. Koonce, USAF (Ret.)

To: S4Aviator Colonels (past & present) are not accustomed to being corrected by Plebians. Notice he had to publish his autobiography while claiming the discussion was simply a "Ford and Chevy" conversation. He then made it official by signing-off with his former rank. I thought your response was thoughtful and interestingly detailed.

Hey Senio. I'd be happy to talk a little bit about the 402B in a future video, although I've never actually flown one, and they aren't too popular. Four bladed propellers are only STC'd for certain 400 series Cessna's, and the last I checked, MT Composite doesn't have an STC for the 414A with the FAA. So thats a big reason you dont see them too often in the USA. The 340/340A has an STC for them, as does the 421C, but not the 414A.

Hi Federico. The nose baggage compartment is not pressurized on any Twin Cessna. There is more than enough room in the back of the cabin for items that need to remain in a pressurized environment.

S4 Aviator could you please do a video on why the turbo charged engines on the 400 series Cessna's are so delicate? And shock cooling and how bad is for those engines? I heard that the engines cases can crack. Pd: awesome work, very interesting all your videos.
@s4aviator804
7 жыл бұрын
I can try and work this into a future video! While serious shock cooling could potentially crack a case, it is more of an issue of cracking cylinders. It isn't something that's unique to the 400 series airplanes. Any high displacement, high output, turbocharged reciprocating aircraft engine is vulnerable to poor operating technique.

The one area you did not address relative to op-costs is the SIM time and re- occurrence training to keep insurance down. Training, training & more training makes the difference between a healthy pilot and a dead pilot. Would like to see a video of a session in the simulator.

I didn't mention initial and recurrent because they aren't required for this airplane for most of the pilots who are in a position to fly it. For example, a pilot who flies the airplane regularly, over. 150 hours per year, and has 5000+ in type, likely will get the same rate without the need for recurrent as someone with no experience in the airplane

I sort of believe it's more people abusing the aircraft, lack of experience, or a mixture of both. (Front gear issues)
