It was less her mom was “forcing” her to do it as it was that her mom saw it as her only way out of death from starvation or being forced to become what she became anyway. It’s such a sad song in a lot of ways, but Fancy also took charge of her own life, so it’s kind of inspiring, too.

I love this song and style of song writing. Storytelling. "Fancy" is a song written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry in 1969. The song depicts its protagonist using prostitution to overcome childhood poverty. This was not a movie but a music video made for Reba McEntire. This is not based on actual events but shows what an incredible storyteller Bobbie Gentry is! Bobbie Gentry also wrote Ode to Billy Joe in 1967.

@@Black-Swan-007 @Black Swan I agree to a degree. But anybody can be forced into prostitution as a child. It may hit boys and girls differently but it is very real in a lot of children's lives. It doesn't mean that if they have experienced this that it's not just as painful. It's a terrible reality that a lot of children face. Be it boy, girl, gay or straight. I imagine anyone that has been forced into this may have a hard time listening to a song like this. But I agree that it may affect girls differently. But it's not any easier for boys when it happens to them. I bet it's just as scary, confusing and painful for boys as it is for girls. It's tragic that it happens at all. Boys and girls alike that have lived this life is going to struggle trying to come to terms, and an understanding as to why such a terrible thing happened to them. For those that have not been through anything like this it may hit women differently than men. But it does not mean that men can not empathize. Which is what we are all doing when we have been through such a terrible reality.

"Fancy" was originally recorded by Bobbie Gentry (you should do her song "Ode to Billie Joe"). From what I've read, the story is fictional but there are some parallels to Gentry's poor Southern upbringing. She actually married Bill Harrah (founder of Harrah's casinos) the year before its release and would divorce him after less than a year. Reba's version is a straight up cover, and has often referred to it as her "signature hit".

Back in 1991, most of Reba’s touring band was killed in a plane crash and she was devastated. I got to see her when she came to my hometown on tour after the release of the album, For My Broken Heart. I’ll never forget how intensely emotional her performance was after that heartbreak. She gave those band members a beautiful tribute with that tour and the album. Some great tunes from that time: For My Broken Heart, The Greatest Man I Never Knew, Is There Life Out There, The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia. Later on, she did The Heart Won’t Lie with Vince Gill and their voices are magical together.

Reba was born in McAlester, Oklahoma. It is not about her life, as others have said her family sang ( still do just not as famous as her ), and dad was a rodeo champion as well as her grandfather. She got her start singing the national anthem , being heard by a producer or something like that, and has never stopped since. She is hands down the queen of country. Many firsts she began including being a good businesswoman making her own recording company. Her own shows, Broadway, movies, videos and so forth. She is a legend, and is inspiring to new female country artists to see how far they can go. Love to reba always. Thank you for listening to country not just reba, but all you listen to,it can be quite inspirational a story told thru song. Many sadly stay with one genre refuses to listen to any other. Its good you listen to all types at least to try songs. Bless Y'all.

"Is this a movie?" Back in the day, especially the days when MTV played music and ruled their demographic, artists actually incorporated their songs into videos that told a story. Country artists still do to a good extent, but it used to be obligatory to put out a video to accompany your song if you expected it to do well on the charts.

a few key things to keep in mind "it was the summer i turned 18" meaning that she was no longer a minor (legally speaking) "a benevolent man took me in of the streets" meaning that she did spend at least a little time "working the streets" and although the story does have a happy ending it was far from an easy life (at least in the beginning) "i can still hear the *desperation* in my poor momma's voice ringing in my ear" meaning that weather you agree with it or not the mother made the only choice she thought she had in order to give her daughter *a chance* at a better life
@likeorasgod

I actually took the line "A Benevolent man took me in of the streets." As her mom found her a well meaning or kindly man she was marrying her off to get her out of poverty. Than again I was a kid growing up when this song was big so maybe it was just my kid mind that thought that. It was not unheard of for poor girls to be married off to older more well to do men.

@@likeorasgod No, she was taken in by the benevolent man as an escort, rather than a street hooker, like other commenter said. After that man she said she then escorted for a king, a few congressmen, other aristrocrats, and through high level prostitution she became rich on her own, no longer having to worry about money, which is what her mother had hoped was her chance for a way out. Y'alls reaction was wonderful. I grew up on this music, odd as the idea of a five year of belting this out is. In my mind, her mother pushed her into being a lady of the night to escape the life of poverty, foster care, and homelessness that awaited her. She spent every last cent to dress her up beautifully for the service she'd be joining and making her look older so child services wouldn't look for her. But she refused to be ashamed of her beginnings and she turned that into a singing and movie career.

Reba Graduated from Kiowa High School in Kiowa Oklahoma. She’s from the small community of Chockie Oklahoma. My dad taught her in school. A lady named Bobbie Gentry first released “Fancy” in 1969. Reba, her older brother Pake and their younger sister Susie sang together in high school as The Singing McEntires with other high school musicians. Reba used to sing this song at the high school sock hops and the Band would play at the halftime of the high school football games on a flatbed trailer where my dad was the head coach. Reba’s sister Susie was my sister’s friend and Reba sometimes babysat us. She was so much fun

This is actually a cover by Reba, (a Texan, by the way). The original was written and recorded by Bobbie Gentry in 1970, I believe. She was an incredible talent. Reba also covered, "The Night When the Lights Went Out in Georgia", originally recorded by Vicki Lawrence, (She actually started out on the Carol Burnett Show as a young woman and later, Mama on Mama's Family, if you remember that show), which was written by her then husband, Bobby Russell. He had offered the song to Cher, but Cher's husband, Sonny Bono didn't want her to record it and so she turned it down. Bobby Russell then basically talked his wife, Vicki Lawrence to record it and it was a big hit! I was around when all these great late 60's and 70's songs first came out. The music was great back then.

Reba's 1990 version is a cover and her biggest selling single .It was certified platinum in 2020 for over 1 million paid downloads sold. The Gentry original is more sultry and has a blues vibe. Bobbie Gentry was the first white female recording artist to have a self penned song go top ten on the r&b singles chart with her signature hit Ode to Billie Joe which also charted #1 pop( four weeks) #5 adult contemporary, #8 r&b and #17 country .It sold three million copies in 1967, won four grammy awards and was named by Billboard as the third biggest single and fourth biggest album of 1967.
