A barracuda is a predatory saltwater fish that stalks rather than hunts. They're incredibly fast, powerful and nasty fighters. Ann and Nancy Wilson wrote this song about one of their promoters that wanted to portray them as incestuous polyamorous lesbians, to basically refer to the promoter as a nasty, slimy, stalking predator. Also, Sisters harmonizing. No autotune, just incredible talent and Ann Wilson is still killing it in her 70s, she recently covered Layne Staley’s vocals on "Rooster" with Alice In Chains.

Fun Fact: Ann & Nancy Wilson are sisters, they wrote this song as an angry response to their record label spreading false scandalous rumors about them, saying that Ann & Nancy were secretly lovers (which obviously wasn't true) just as a marketing ploy to increase album sales. This made the sisters so mad that they wrote this song to tell off, rebuke & reprimand these record label agents, calling them "barracudas" (a predator fish known for their deliberately cruel temperament & vicious behavior).

The story on the writing of this song goes like this. Ann and Nancy Wilson were at record company party of some sort when one of the sleazy slimy record company executive asked Ann "How is your lover?" Ann thought he meant her boyfriend at the time. So she said he's fine and the scum bag replied no I mean your lover your sister how's your lover? This pissed Ann off and that very night she wrote Barracuda! And the rest is history! Love that you are going down the Heart rabbit hole! They have so many great song! What About Love, and if you want to hear Nancy take the lead in some songs, These Dreams, Stranded, and Will You be There in The Morning. You really can't go wrong with Heart! Cheers!

I never saw Heart live, but I got a very cool experience once in around the mid or late 2000s. Roger Fisher (lead guitar) was in a band called The Geofrey Castle Band and they played a gig in a very small venue with Mike Derrosier (drums) sitting in. It was such a small venue there was no stage and we were sitting only about 20 feet from Roger, at most. It was a lounge with little round tables so no rows of seats. I got some autographs and hung out a bit with them but frankly I had trouble finding things to say. Oh and in addition to their new stuff we were treated to Barracuda. Roger was still in amazing shape and agile and looked not much older than back then. He also sounded awesome too. Mike looked a lot different with short hair and a moustache and a few pounds heavier, like the rest of us, lol. They were very nice and friendly. I wish I had a video of that show.

Heart was often called a female Led Zeppelin (usually not as a criticism). It was somewhat true; they covered many L.Z. songs, and the Wilson sisters were chosen to perform "Stairway to Heaven" at the now-legendary Kennedy Center Tribute. But they took that prog/metal quality and forged their own sound. "Dreamboat Annie" is an exceptional concept album, musically, lyrically, and in terms of production and recording. It was one of the early rock choices for a Half-Speed Master audiophile release; it remains one of my favorite albums ever. P.S. Roger Fisher (lead guitar) and Michael Derosier (drums) deserve more credit for the masterful, innovative sound of the first Heart incarnation.

On their first three albums (sort of) Heart was a particular band. After that the personnel changed a lot. "Barracuda" was 1977, "Alone" was 1987. They had changed a lot by then. That galloping guitar riff, Nancy Wilson, says was borrowed from a Nazareth song, that they started fooling around with during a sound check. The lead guitar was Roger Fisher who was Nancy Wilson's boyfriend, They broke up after the album "Dog and Butterfly".

Ann’s voice was great in the 80’s with “ Alone”. It’s still great. But the image then was corporate created. This however, is 70’s Heart. This is their authentic selves and what we all fell in love with from that time Ann eventually could not stand the stress of what the “suits” demanded that she become, she suffered burnout and took some years off. When Heart came back, it was on their own terms. At least, that’s what I understand to be true. Others can correct me if I’m wrong

The technical music term for that style of guitar riff is a "chugga chugga" And no, I'm not (entirely) joking. "Alone" was Heart's 90's come back vs. the 70's original. Happened a lot around that time, actually. Aerosmith was probably the biggest 90's resurgence of a 70's band, but Heart, Pink Floyd, and others (plus some 80's bands like Duran Duran) put out hits to get back on people's radars for a while.

Best female rockers in rock history! I've seen them in concert twice back in the 1980's. Ann Wilson is still killing it to this day! Crazy on You, is probably my favorite of theirs, with Nancy's extended acoustic intro. Definitely worth checking out!! Thanks Stacey!😍👍👍
Another great choice. Ann Wilson has a killer set of pipes. And she (and the band) can shift effortlessly between soft songs like “Dog And Butterfly” and straight-ahead rockers like this one. I fell in love with their driving “Black On Black” but I’m not sure if it was ever released as a single. Also, side note, this is the studio audio track, over (semi-) live visuals. Don’t enjoy hearing “washed up”. We don’t know that part of your life, and don’t like hearing you described that way. It doesn’t describe what we’re seeing here on the Tube. Enjoying your new part-time contributor! Take good care of him. Love the ferocity in that Twitch clip! Remember, check out Two Steps From Hell ~ “Dragonwing” will take you for a ride.
