Have you tried the Fobes Eb clarinet extension? It's intended to stabilize the lowest note, like the vent holes in an oboe bell. Looks interesting. I've liked the idea since I noticed I had trouble on the lowest note on both flute and recorder. I thought it might be easier if there were another open hole below the last finger hole.

Schwenk & Seggelke makes piccolo clarinets both in A-flat and in G, they also are one of the few makers along with Buffet to offer instruments both in E-flat and in D.

The upper-range limitations - could probably be overcome - if the companies/producers would start designing their Ab and Eb models with smaller diameters, longer bores, and more narrow reeds/mouthpieces.

Would it still have a characteristic clarinet sounds at that point? I'm genuinely curious.

@@Symphing12 The many members of the Clarinet-family, should be enough, proof that the characteristic overtone-spectrum of clarinets, is due to the Single-reed and almost straigh-bore construction.. Extending the upper range could also be achieved by adding a register key ,up higher towards the mouthpiece ( similar to saxofones) The placement of this would need some experimentation though. . Is there such a thing as the Piccolo Oboe?
@BretNewtonComposer
5 жыл бұрын
There are instruments pitched in F and E-flat a fourth and a minor third above the normal Oboe. Loree calls their instrument in F a Piccolo Oboe, though more properly these instruments are Sopranino Oboes. A true Piccolo Oboe a full octave higher than the Oboe is an impractical wish.

I've seen a clarinet pitched in E natural, one semitone above the E-flat clarinet.
@BretNewtonComposer
5 жыл бұрын
What you saw was most likely an old E-flat Clarinet in high pitch. High pitch was roughly A=457 or even slightly higher. To put it a semitone higher, A would equal 466, so the HP instrument would be closer to E than Eb. It would be relatively easy to shorten the barrel and bring it up to E, but a purpose-built E Clarinet has probably never existed.

@@BretNewtonComposer It's possible. I found it on the University of Edinburgh's musical instrument museum website, which has all sorts of oddities, such as a bass clarinet in A, and a bass in C.

As the high A-flat is about as small as can be made where human hands can operate, making a smaller instrument would be a moot point.

Same reason Benedikt Eppelsheim's soprillo saxophone is keyed only to high E-flat instead of the standard High F/F-sharp; there isn't enough physical space on the instrument to fit the extra keys or tone holes.

Why is the piccolo clarinet in Ab and not Bb? That makes things even more complicated when writing for it for someone like me who is used to tuning based in the key of C(like that on the piano). I already have to do this if I want a specific sounding pitch on the Bb clarinet: 1) Write the pitch as if on the piano 2) Move the note up a step on the staff(so C is notated as D, etc.) I am practically transposing C major to D major here to get the pitch I am wanting on the clarinet. Most piccolo instruments are simply an octave above. Piccolo flute for instance is in C, an octave above the concert flute(though the lowest note is D so without extended techniques, the piccolo equivalent of middle C is not possible). Same story with the piccolo trumpet(and this is a Bb or A instrument, just like the clarinet is) and the piccolo violin. Simple octave transposition of the instrument it is based off of. But no, the piccolo clarinet has to make things difficult. This is what I would have to do if I were to go from piano tuning to piccolo clarinet tuning: 1) Write the pitch as if on the piano 2) Move the note up a step on the staff 3) Move the note an octave down 4) Move the note another step up(so D becomes E, etc.) Steps 1 and 2 are the same as for the Bb clarinet, step 3 is the octave transposition and then step 4 is just like step 2. So why is the piccolo clarinet not simply an octave transposition of the Bb clarinet? Is a piccolo clarinet in Bb too small to be viable or what?

The size of a high B-flat clarinet and placement of the keyword would make it virtually impossible for normal hands to play it
