in the last several years of watching physics and cosmology lectures on youtube, this is the first one that explained the logical leaps that lead to our current theories of the universe. the impression i've gotten before is that einstein and all the others were some sort of crazy geniuses that came up with fantastical assumptions that happened to be correct. it was very refreshing and grounding to actually be able to follow the how and why these ideas came about

Exactly, I had a similar sort of understanding but this series makes it plain: Neils Bohr, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, all of them would not have accomplished what they did without each other's work. Although in the case of Newton it goes back even further, without all the mathematics work of people even further back in the past, he would've had no basis to invent calculus. They all had to learn everything from A to B to create C.

@IcanFartLOUD To be fair, technically, so is Newton and every theorist before. We know that we can not have a complete understanding and thus or models will only be consistent with known reality until that point.

Loved how some specific subjects can destroy your brain, like: time, gravity (and what is a "force"), visualizing an object in "higher" dimensions, conceiving infinity, the end of your own perception. Compare to those, understanding how our own brain works seems like a peace of cake, yet we still don't know that one either.

Out of all the masterpieces this channel releases, this episode truly stands out. Through the music, the writing, and the narration...how this episode conveyed the eventual darkness that everything in our universe will meet is of the highest quality. I came to this by chance (or was it predetermined?) when it began to play after something completely unrelated ended. I looked at my tablet and saw its subject matter, and being interested in science fact and fiction I let it play. This is one that I know I will come back to again and again. It's genuinely fascinating, well explained, and the narration and music are relaxing to take in. I'm going to subscribe now and listen to your other videos.

Of all the channels I've seen on KZitem, this is probably the best. And of all this channel's videos I liked this one the most. With its stellar amount of content, perfectly executed presentation and calm narration it is a joy to watch. Even though I already knew about many of the things it touches, there was not a moment I was not on the edge of my seat. Everything is so nicely embedded into the history of discoveries. I wish there were videos like these 30 years ago. Had I watched them back then when I was young I very well might have chosen a different career path... Thank you for making utterly brilliant videos!

Every one you heard is the best. Nice narration. Time There is no arrow of time. All change occurs in three dimensions. A fourth dimension for time creates an infinite regress because we always need another dimension for change. There can be no arrows because that would violate relativity. There are no arrows because an arrow is a privileged observer.

WoW Firstly, thank you for taking the TIME to put this very easy to follow and understand esamble of brilliance together. It is so greatly broken down into simple forms of each dynamic and put together with very well chosen graphics making the overall story easier to take in. This is coming from a person who once avoided things like quantum dynamics/mechanics& physics because it hurt the hed to understand but now find myself in a place where i am writing my own theories based on nothing more than desire and slowed down by my own "education" i never felt qualified to even speak loudly about my discoveries, never mind write them down. This video is a trully brilliand gathering of every field i am interested in and manages one to continue to think about all things RELATIVE without having to be an expert in all of the fields required. It must have taken alot of thought and alot editing/re-editing and difficult to prodoce. Kudos and again... Thank you!

That someone interested in such intellectual matters, pun unintended, yet still uses the expression, "Dude", to me that's inspiring. I myself never made it to the upper level of education/college, but have always found things of science endlessly fascinating, and happen to strongly appreciate the term dude, in that it relates an intense respect at the most basic level of our intellectualism. Hopefully that doesn't sound off in any way. 🧐+😆~💥

These are great videos, a lot of history is revealed that is obscure and is left out of most literature of the subject matter. So much of Space, Time, Physics is almost 100% reliant on the human invention of Mathematics. You know, the creation of our minds which is based on how many fingers we have? And of course Time, another invention of the Human Race, so we know everything isn't happening all at once. I believe it's our own hubris which prevents some of the answers we seek, it's usually when we get out of our own way we accomplish so much. I have few regrets in how I have lived my life, but if I had known then what I know now, I would of tried harder in Math class. I have the time, now, that I am retired, to really dig into these subjects, but my ignorance of advanced mathematics, limits me at every turn. So I ponder these theories and thought experiments, always wondering, for now, it's good enough.

You have such a gift for public-facing presentations of high level scholarship. These videos give me (at least a semblance of) hope for the rift between career academics and non career academics. Combining history, astrophysics, (more fields I’m not going to list), and visual components in a narrative form that is approachable for anyone interested in learning about space is no small feat. At any level of understanding, there is something to take from your videos. Seriously unmatched. Thank you :-)

I paused the video to sleep just before it mentions Dirac. First off, completely surprised I never heard of Dirac, he sounds like my kind of genius. But secondly, I had come to a similar conclusion around that time, and I went to bed contemplating the possibility of spacetime being emergent, the same as conscience and sentience may be, only to wake up in the morning, finish the video before work, and be greeted by a similar conclusion to my own. That's a nice feeling. :D Although money stopped me from pursuing a career in physics and astronomy, I'm glad to see my brain still works on the right wavelengths. Gunna need to study more about Dirac... Just this little bit about him in this video was fascinating to me.

I can grasp many of the theories and functions of the universe/reality when explained well, like this, and even a little deeper/more complex and described in a less rudimentary, "user freindly" fashion. But i cant understand the math or working out any equations at all. I took 1 physics class in high school, then 1 semester in college (despite how i barely scraped by in HS) because i find it interesting and wish i was smart enough to pursue this field, but i withdrew from the class at the deadline, i had 0 chance and was so lost and overwhwlmed. I really cant do mathematics of any sort sadly. My professor would still answer my questions very nicely despite it revealing to him that i wasnt gonna make it in that class. He politely told me twice to withdraw while assuring me that it waa ok & i wasnt dumb. He waa really cool. He also said i was smart and could understand theories and the universes functionality, reality, & the sheer scaling or size of the numbers and infinity, but my brain wasnt mathmaticaaly gifted. He told me to pursue philosophy and 6 years later i am a philosophy teacher in HS, which is hard to find. He was My favorite professor, and i only had his class for like. 7 or 8 weeks

I hope you make a part 2 to this, as the subject matter is abundant. Truly educational in all aspects, I had no idea that it was Galileo that first proposed relativity I thought it was Einstein. I particularly like how you give mention and credit to the unsung scientists.

It really is quite fascinating isn't it? The book "Dialogue of Two Worlds" is quite a famous book and the absolute definition of space and time is actually called the Galilean transformation thus showing how Galileo was the first to propose a theory of relativity. Einstein's Special Relativity relies on the Lorentz Transformation instead where a specific speed has to be held constant in every reference frame.

The thing about the big bang introducing low entropy and that creating an arrow of time made me think of our conception of our universe as a stripe or enclosed area of spacetime almost topologically closed from other areas

Since black holes only have the properties of particles (speed and direction), scientists are now beginning to equate wormholes to entanglement. If this holds out, we would have a bridge between GR and the standard model. It would be a really cool time for science.

I love the narrator's voice. it is soothing and gentle to my ears. graphic wise, it is mesmerising, but the audio on its own could put me to relaxing mode.

Well done. I would be interested in a video that adds, to these thoughts, the concept of purpose. Almost endless complication, I'm sure, but what would be the why of the universe? Is it possible that there is no purpose to everything around us, or does its existence provide the framework upon which to understand purpose?

The really fun question is where/how the information of space and time (or whatever causes them) is stored. If humanity ever figures that out, it opens the door to all sorts of sci-fi stuff.

I think that to simulate time running backward you replace the t in equations that describe motions with -t. But mechanical systems aren't all reversible because when running forward, energy is lost over time in various ways. Therefore, the simulated behavior won't return a system to its previous state. The energy being reinserted into the system is not simulated, and as a thought experiment, it would be returned if time actually ran backward.

If I were a teacher, THESE videos, along with History of the Earth and HT would be my main tools. I'm autistic ADHD dyslexic OCD, I have communication issues , zero exec func, my frontal lobe is a unicycle and the devil rides the pedals, I have an 8 cylinder with 4 burnt out and NO POWER STEERING or brakes which is why I'm not a teacher, but I'm confident I could be with THESE MARVELOUS TOOLS 👏👏👏 bravo

I always felt time is not a real thing. Just a word we made up to give some kind of measurement to something. It is very amazing that something exists rather than nothing. But could nothing really exist. As in.. isnt it incredible to try to have your mind think about existence. What if the universe didnt exist. Nothing existed ever at any time.. There is no way to comprehend that.. sometimes when I try to grasp that thought, my body and brain get this weird feeling that is hard to explain. Its like an overwhelming feeling. its pretty intense to be able to do it.

I'm not sure if I understood the intro, with the last civilization trying to "buy" themselves time with using the black holes time dialation effect, as the universe around them ceases to exist. If I remember correctly, time slows the closer you get to a BH, but that means, it slows for you. From your point of reference, everything "outside" the influence of this effect would seem to accelerate in time. So from your perspective, the end would come even faster now. Getting near to a BH is like pushing the fast forward button on the universe, from your point of view. It makes no sense, if extending your time was your goal.

@Sam Hartley technically yes but you have to remember that the end of the universe is a pretty poorly defined concept. Is the end once all black holes have evaporated? Because for a reasonably massive black hole that takes an unimaginably vast amount of time - even considering the time dilation effect of residing near a black hole.

This was the comment i was looking for. It's the same thought i had. Aren't they just hastening the end of the universe from their perspective rather than gaining more time? I would think they would want to experience as much time as possible.

It is always incredible to learn how things were discovered, especially so long ago. How the speed of light was discovered is so clever it blew my mind. If I was transported to 1600s, I don't even think I could of imagined a way to prove it, even though I know it to be true.

Welp we just opened the door between relativity in quantum mechanics by creating the first wormhole ever using a quantum computer, we sent a particle through the wormhole. With that said I can't wait to hear updates about this!

I actually find the idea that space and time are emergent phenomenon very intriguing. That actually explains the massive disconnect between GR and QCD. Because that means GR is a theory of the macroscopic, where spacetime is emergent, but QCD is microscopic, where spacetime doesn't exist. Of course, I don't know whether or not that makes sense mathematically, but it's a very interesting idea to ponder
