I'm not sure why people think African Americans have no culture. Our ancestors were brought here from many different countries all of whom had different cultures. And after being stripped of their true heritages they began to form their own culture as one and each generation has added to the mix. African Americans are truly a multicultural People. I hate when the negative action of some are made out to be a commonality amongst an entire race of people. Those actions are not cultural its an issue of character and this is an issue that spands across the human race.
@SundaeKongoKingdom

Alicia Mitchell Allow me to disagree my dear. You're living in a white system created by Jim Craw and many....which influence your behaviour. Same for latinos. This is not culture,this is reaction. Culture is histories, behavior,food,spirituality and purposes which lead the group to a higher lifestyle. Black Americans are not proud of africans but just to be black. This is not enough. Instead of spending thousands of dollars for the nba or nfl finals,you could go down in a english speaking african country and be among africans. Why not?
@luxuryluxury4649

Please stop speaking for all AA. You sound very ignorant and the things you say are not true. You are obliviously hanging around the wrong AA, and believing the hype of the media. I am AA and Native American and proud to be black, and proud that my ancestors are African. Most AA that I know love their African roots and are not ashamed of it, if anything we brag about it bc many of us know the truth regardless of what the media portrays. And we do have our own culture, it is a multicultural adopted from several ancestors with different cultural backgrounds combined into 1. We don't have one culture because we are not a ONE culture peoples, I don't understand why people don't understand that. More importantly the USA is huge, depending on what part of the US one comes from your cultural background might be different. People from the south are culturally different than peoples from the north, and not just culturally , genetically as well. And if we don't have our own unique culture, why is it that people from all over the world are mimicking AA especially in countries like Japan, Sweden, and even certain parts of Germany. We have created our own style music, food, and fashion which is a combination of other cultures combined into 1, that what makes an AA, not one culture.. Soul music, blues, hip hip and even deep house music was created by the AA in Chicago first. All of our music is apart of our culture just like Africans have their own music , and Asians as well. And if you think we are not spiritually connected, you are wrong again. It seems like you're living a Jim Crow system believing the lies. Not all peoples you see in American that are black are of African descent , many are Black Native Americans who were already here before slavery, and many of us know this as well but this is an entire different topic.

He also told me he was planning ancestry DNA to find his actual roots, Also planning to travel to other Africa countries. I guess its 50-50. Interesting. I don't hear Europeans saying, "Those Americans of German/Irish/British/French/Polish descent don't know their roots or culture. They don't know where they come from." They just view them as Americans. It seems to be an African thing. Different culture, similar bloodline. I don't see why Africans get offended when Black Americans don't know anything about African culture. It's not our culture. We're literally hundreds of years removed from it. We've created a new culture in the U.S. that has some African influences, but is still Black American. It shouldn't be taken as disrespect.

Black Americans don't feel superior. And we do have a distinct cultural awareness and it was created in America! Maybe people don't like the fact that even though we have roots from Africa, we are not African in the same sense. Think about Jazz, Hiphop, R&B, the many black American authors, composers and inventors! We have culture! And we are just proud of our heritage! We are Americans just as much and even more than white people! USA would be a completely different place without us and we own our contribution!

Joe T well said, I totally agree. American culture is emulated around the world, especially African American music and style. As rich as Africa is in resources such as diamonds, gold and other minerals it's a continent which languishs in poverty. When people talk of great sports figure around the world I've never heard of anyone coming from Africa, where are their Serena and Venus Williams, Michael Jordan's, Muhammad Ali's, Mike Tyson's and Floyd Mayweather's. We Dominate Sports and Make It our Brands. We started the Sneaker Culture followed by people around the World. Where are their Michael Jackson's, Beyonce, Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Jay Z's Oprah to name just a few. I noticed African's try so hard to emulate African Americans to advance or gain status in whatever country outside of Africa they may be living in. I've read alot of comments about African Americans not having a culture, who the hell told you we don't have a culture it just shows what little other races think they really know about African Americans. Some things aren't meant for you to know becuase you're not one of us, we're Unique. Our History is our Own, you don't need to know or analyze it to know who we are. Our ancestors were from Africa and mixed with Europeans and Native Americans but despite the hardships and suffering they endured during slavery they help shape one of the greatest countries in world. The African American culture and history is ingrained in American history. Our accomplishments and successes through hard work and determination help us bring about the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. During Slavery, We were a people without a country to call our own but inspite of what you think we won our Freedom and gain many Liberties. Our Democracy is a model for other courntries around the world. From what I see on the African news the continent of Africa still has a long way to go with uplifting it's people and the continent out of poverty. Ebola was the last worst disease which devasted West Africa from 2014-2016. There are recent reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) that Ebola has resurfaced in some African countries. But you're worried about African Americans. It's Asinine, you need to figure out how to resolve the issues plaguing the continent of Africa since you are such Geniuses and think you know so much about African American's culture and history, when in Truth you don't know a DAMN THING about African Americans. Many African countries are still practicing gential mulations on young girls, just senseless. Still killing albinos because you think there's some mystic powers associated with their body parts using it in Rituals and Shit. I could go on and on but this topic is starting to bore me. I'll leave you with this message: Stop hating on African Americans and Love yourselves!!!

The guy in the red polo was the most honest person on here. True some Black Americans do act and think that they are better, and truly its the culture we grew up in-western culture. And whether we admit it or not we grew up in a European culture. We may have the same skin, which makes us kin, but culturally we are not the same. I have friends from Kenya, Ghana and South Africa. The colored/Black friend I had from South Africa was the only one I felt was culturally close in attitude to a western culture. And for the record I do not think I am better than anyone regardless of where they are from. My friend from Kenya, we used to talk about what was different in each other's culture, I learned a lot from her and I am sure she learned somethings from me.

I really hate how Africans view our culture. I hear too many say that they know their culture and we don't. The guy in the red shirt called white Americans "real Americans". That's part of the problem, we are not immigrants or the children of recent immigrants in a new country with a new culture. Most white Americans today don't even have roots in the US as deep as ours but according to some people an italian american whose grandparents came here in 1920 are real americans because they're white. The US is only a few centuries old and we have been here from the beginning of this nation when the US was still a colony and not a country, we were here. We came before the pilgrims, regardless of our status, that's our history. I'm not ashamed of my enslaved ancestors. We are tied to this land. We are a mix of various West African people with a culture that developed here from scratch because our ancestors languages and cultures were stripped from them.

Honestly us black Americans created our own culture in America. It just other races think black culture is cool, and are always trying to be a part in it. African Americans don't know where their exact orgin is in Africa, and it's not their fault. Idk why people blame us for that. Most of the black people I know just praise Africa the continent as a whole because we all come from one root. But blacks do have their own culture in America.

Kechi otta Africans can't be " racist " to black Americans because for one, they are black them selves and also they have no actual systemic power over us. now they can be prejudice but there is a more official term for Race on Race predjedic and that's called " xenophobia "

Many Africans are definitely prejudice against AAs, ive seen it so much in NY. It goes both ways. I've seen them both do it, but African immigrants in the usa (not refugees) have a superiority complex because they are wealthier and have a stronger culture and don't have much of our economic issues and family structures.

Why are there so many videos fixated on what Africans think of Black Americans or Africans versus African Americans? Black Americans have been far removed from Africa centuries ago. Why think that there would be any comparisons outside of skin color? I often see both parties make generalized and sometimes very stereotypical assumptions about eachother. Africa is made up of many cultures and countries as well. Not all African are the same and not all Black Americans are the same. I don't see the point in trying to make one group of ppl out to be more superior or inferior than the other. I find the term American American inaccurate to Black Americans because they are not from Africa and have no cultural or family ties there. They are simply Americans with a subculture. Yes, Black Americans do have their own version of American culture. Either way, all Black people of the world are beautiful.
@MrJovon321
6 жыл бұрын
And I agree with you. I'm African American, but I don't find "black" any better because it was imposed onto our ancestors and is taking on a pretty Eurocentric view of ourselves. The whole racial way of viewing other ethnic groups/cultures of people is very 17th-19th century-style European idealism. We should just call ethnic people by their original ethnic/national titles and stop labeling each other by color/race. I still share your sentiments about the title "African American". We are our own ethnic group in this country, but I don't believe we have yet defined it well enough.
@luvlapetite1421
6 жыл бұрын
Alia O I don't think the term African Americans is wrong in describing Black people who have been here for centuries. People somehow get the term African describing us as one from the current African culture/ African culture, all it means is simply we from our ancestors who were pure African, that's it. I have no problem claiming that African description because its true. Ok. African just means the land our/my ancestors. People stop getting your panties in a bunch over nothing. Damn
@MrJovon321

I don't think African American is direct enough for our specific history. There are many different ethnic people of African descent in the US who identify with/as African American. We are a modern people who have our own ethnic history/culture yet we lack real ethnic distinction.
@MrJovon321

Amazing Stud Why all of the complaints about Aframs though? Lol. The whole slavery thing is deeper than that. I'm too tired to go on about it (I see comments like this all of the time), but it's a different issue from "this race was enslaved" blah. And I am not one to seek reparations or sympathy from anyone else, still I can recognize the lasting effects from some of that messed up history. "Race" is crap, full of nothing, hardly a thing, idealistic. You and I both come from a real people with specific history, not this idealistic "race" and color mess. I don't know your ethnic background, but whatever it is would be more accurate, closer to reality.

I was born and raised in America by parents from Guinea-Conakry (in West Africa). All of the friends that I grew up with had African parents from countries like Nigeria and Ethiopia. My younger sister's friends were mostly African-Americans. My parents liked my friends, but they were more hostile towards my sister's friends. They would tell my sister that they didn't really like the people she hung out with. Some of the stupid reasons that my dad gave was "They don't have dads in the house and they might make you join a gang." Yes, most of her friends came from broken homes. But they were very respectful and hardworking people. We didn't even live in a gang-ridden neighborhood! I didn't like it when my dad would talk about my sisters friends, because I knew them and they were nice people. When I asked my dad why he would say such things, he told me "The black people here (in America), they don't work hard. They only care about being rappers and the men always leave the children without a father." I tried to tell him that this wasn't the case for ALL black people, but he was still firm in his beliefs (still is today). Now, even though my parents have some prejudices against African-Americans, some of the African-Americans that I knew were no better. When I was in middle and high school, I was surrounded by many black kids who still thought that Africa was a country or that Africans lived amongst lions and other wild animals. When Ebola was all over the news, Africans at my school were frequently targeted by African-Americans. If an African let out a tiny cough, one of the African-Americans would always yell out "Yo, ___ got Ebola!" I remember when a teacher showed us a video of a woman who moved to Tanzania to open a school, this one black girl said "Why would she want to live in Africa? She could get eaten by a lion or die because it's so nasty there." Everyone laughed, and the teacher (also African-American) failed to correct her. Instead, the teacher said "Yes, Africa is really dirty". I wanted to say something, but I was too shy back then. Anyways, this just goes to show that even though it seems that African people look down on African-American people, the African-American people have their faults as well. Hopefully, one day we can realize that at the end of the day---whether your light skin or dark skin, rich or poor, live in a nice house, the projects, or a slum---we're all black and we need to start celebrating the differences that make us unique.

I disagree with the comment that we are arrogant against Africans. If only you all knew how we feel, we are a lost People without our true identity. You do not know the hurt that most of us feel in not knowing who we are, and our Families that are over there. We know we are from Africa, but what Tribe? Who are our People, language, customs and religion? If only you all knew how much that hurts to the core. As far as some Black Men wearing their pants low, that is stereotyped. Only some guys do that, and most are young, and want to be thugs. Not all Black Men carry themselves like that. Do not believe everything that the media shows you. We Love you all in Africa, and pray that we would be as one with you all. Those that talk ignorant of Africans are small in number, and are very ignorant, and do not love themselves. It's not all their fault, it's passed on from centuries of being brainwashed to hate ourselves. Again We Love you, and I am proud to have the genes of Africans.❤️

Because of miseducation, a lot of black Americans do act superior and/or bully blacks who are not from the US (or Canada). I remember growing up hearing terms like "African booty scratcher." Black Caribbeans are also mistreated by some black Americans. I'm a first generation American to Jamaican born parents, I've gotten so many ignorant questions by black Americans about Jamaica. Thanks to euro-centric influence, a lot of Black Americans wanted to be multiracial so bad and glorified the blacks who are/looked multiracial. Some people would deny their blackness and African roots by calling themselves mixed by saying things like: "I'm 5% Cherokee so I'm Native American not black" There was a girl I went to middle school with who wore a curly fake ponytail and then posted a picture on MySpace (remember those days, haha) that she had that "good Puerto Rican hair." Every chance they got, they would talk about how "mixed" they are. I remember talking to a guy who thought I was too "exotic" looking to be 100% black and asked me if I was mixed with Latina (which is not a race) or Native American *eye roll* I think many Black American millennials are finally "waking up" and reclaiming their African roots they once denied and made fun of as social media became a bigger platform where people can showcase that the African continent isn't just about malnourished children, poverty, and genocide. I've noticed more and more black Americans (and Canadians) traveling to Africa and enlightening themselves on the culture they were never taught. I hope we all get a chance to go to each others countries and debunk the misconceptions we've all once thought about each other. Thanks for making this video!

KristiYah I was in middle school 2004-07. The other example were high school and early college so like 2007-13. Cool C: While there were many prominent black leaders in Black American history, it was never taught in grade school. That information was obtained our own for a large percentage of us, primarily via internet. Most American schools only teach slavery, Jim Crow, and black leaders who didn't have a super radical ideology like MLK Jr. So I stick to my statement on many of us being miseducated and euro influenced.

I really enjoyed this. I really enjoyed the points. I’m African American I’m so happy to hear the positive and straight viewpoints. I’m very much aware of my roots. I studied sooo long to find it thank god! But I can truly say I’m there. I believe African Americans and Africans are just alike. The only differences to me is the culture is different . But it’s the same in some ways. We all still show our African talent and spirit in one way or another! It’s a beautiful thing to be African! ❤️

Are you a naturalized American citizen then? Congratulations for immigrating legally and becoming an American. I have never been to Africa, but I have friends who immigrated and became naturalized. But they just call themselves American now, they don't think they need to hyphenate their history. So how long have you lived in America?

There is no difference in colour except existence of some slight mistrust or perceived disaffection between Africa and African Americans. From my experience in USA, some African Americans who do not understand the history of slave trade blame Africans for selling them to the West. One actually said to me, "you guys sold us and now, you are coming to USA to take up our scholarship opportunities as well, was selling us not enough"? Some African Americans in my class claim, they prefer being called black Americans, they are uncomfortable being associated or called Africans. I listen to African American channel (specifically search for Uhuru and go black Africa) recently who described African children as running around in filth and tattered clothes, claiming Africans are not investing in themselves. I listen to channels where they complain of filth, lack of infrastructure, poverty and claim reasons for that predicament is an excuse. When I hear such comments, my reaction is usually synonymous to the description of the guy in red. I feel some African Americans think they have suffered and continue to suffer more than Africans and and that Africans must learn and understand them and treat them in a special way. Africans do not expect them to treat them the way whites look down upon them because they feel they should know better. Africans expect them to be partners in development where they bring their expertise to build non-existent factories or infrastructure and make money from that investment. And not always see themselves as tourist who come in and demand things to be fixed before they come again to spend their "hard earned dollars". It sometimes sound like a threat.

I am "African American" dating a gorgeous man from Ghana and we have this discussion amongst ourselves, friends and family often. I agree with the people interviewed, but how can someone teach their child what they don't know? Also, the media in many nations make sure that we Africans everywhere are against one another. Africa has "Love and Hip Hop", America has feed the children commercials. We never see the full spectrum of our people, just the negative things in order to separate us.

If you're so confused about your past, go take a DNA test to find your ancestry. There are black people everywhere but blacks from an African descent have a different hair texture to other blacks.

African Americans dont think they are superior. They created their own culture and identity due to their surroundings. Anyone who is born and raised in the US who has ties to a Motherland will not forget that but dont expect a person born n raised in the US to claim 100% this or that cause it aint so. It would be delusional to negate the facts that ocurred in history and what took place during the formation of the US as a country. Take myself for example, I consider myself 100% Dominican but ask me about my experiences as a Dominican? I can surely share my experiences as a Dominican American but dont ask me to share about DR the island cause I have never lived there. Visited a few times only. So my claiming to be 100% is not accurate or true to my identity. I have created my own identity as a Dominican American. Same thing goes 4 African Americans.

Black Americans generally don't think about black Africans at all. We have our own lives to live, and most of us identify with our country more than we do our color or our origins. And why wouldn't we?, we are a part of the most powerful nation on the planet. A nation that we helped to build with the sweat and blood of our ancestors. We are proud and unapologetic about that as we should be. Black Americans are the definition of a success story. We have gone from slaves to titans of industry,political leaders and philosophers in the most competitive and diverse place on earth. Black Americans made being black cool as fuck...we are cultural icons around the world,imitated yet not duplicated, not even by black Africans.

I hope these conversations continue, I feel it is a great way to bridge the gap and lesson the divide. People don't like to hear the negative things but unless we address them how can we resolve them? I’m a Black American and see myself aligned with my sisters & brothers all over the African diaspora. But I agree with the brother in the red shirt. Some African Americans do have negative thoughts of Africans because they’ve internalized the racism and adopted the mindset of the colonizers. So, it’s a process of breaking down the lies/myths taught to us through the racist, Eurocentric lens while also acquiring truth and knowledge from an African or Afrocentric point of view, meaning works written by Africans about African and Africans for Africans. That takes time and education, and I’m grateful for attending an HBCU because that is where I actually began learning about Africa. My lecturer freshman year was the first person in my life to ask me and challenge me to just believe that I have a cultural link to Africa...and that blew my mind.
