Anna Todd's statement kind of... confuses me. Like, what is the point of After, then? It's a "love story" without love, and a "romance" where the main relationship is too terrible to root for. And yet unlike other stories centering on unhealthy relationships, it doesn't try to deconstruct romance tropes or make commentary on society or anything like that. It's just showing a toxic relationship... and that's it.

Honestly it seems to me that she just wanted to write some Harry Styles sex scenes, filling the rest in with general plot points from well known movies, and just went along with it as it started getting popular. I mean, keep in mind that she didn't write it as a screenplay or even a book, it was a fanfiction on a website with little standards (not trying to insult people who write for wattpad or anything, I just mean that the stories don't have to go through editors, publishers etc. as far as I know). I imagine she went along with it as it got more famous, but was never really prepared with answers/insights as a professional author

I mean it doesn't even need a commentary on their relationship it just needs to avoid glamourizing it. Take for example euphoria, literally everyone but Maddy and Nate see how detrimental their "bonnie and clyde" dynamic is, it's brought up by both parental figures and friends. The show itself is visually appealing with the set designs, lighting, camera work, etc. but not once do they give off the message of "love is meant to be like this". Even the narration makes things clear to the audience, "It's not the abuse that scared her, it's the fact she'd still love him no matter what he did"

The section where the characters kept repeating the "forgiveness" mantra really freaked me out. When you've been abused, that's the mindset your abuser puts you in. Anna Todd can say all she'd like about not writing a dating guide and it's "just a story" but the teenage girls watching this could internalize those messages. I know I already dealt with a lot of guilt from my personal life without having pieces of media tell me "you should forgive your abuser without any evidence of them changing because they're a better person now, because they said so !!"
@Aster_Risk
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. There's always so much emphasis on forgiving people, when that's up to the victim to decide. We treat people badly if they aren't able to forgive, as if forgiveness is owed instead of earned or conditional.
@graceboulet5316
3 жыл бұрын
It also seems to blur the line between forgiveness, acceptance, and tolerance. You can forgive someone for how they treated you so it doesn’t hold power over you, you can accept that’s the way they are so you don’t hurt yourself trying to make them change, but you shouldn’t tolerate toxic behavior. The terms might be related, but they don’t mean the same thing and are definitely NOT enacted the same way.

I genuinely couldn’t imagine the two of them in a normal situation or having a normal conversation without it ending in a fight. What kind of basis is their relationship even on? They literally have no foundation, common interests other than the cliche good girl wants the bad boy. When they all wears off, then what? There’s literally nothing there. Another annoyance was that that after every single fight and then they’d just sleep together as tho that would make all their problems disappear. Like dancing around any of their problems but never really resolved any of them and I mean any of them. They literally either didn’t mention it again but it was still a problem or just left it hanging. Also this isn’t even about the story but the actor of Hardin was so freaking awful it was hilarious at some times. His accent sounds like someone faking a brutish accent really badly but I was even more shocked to discover he really is British???
@newkidontheblock8662

Bro I agree with everything you said. I mean from the get go they're a failed relationship because they literally have nothing in common other than they read and they feel sexually attracted to each other. Like there's no chemistry between them and the only exciting parts is when they argue, because that's the only action that ever happens besides them having sex all the time. Which is super annoying because they take that anger out on sex, which is all the dang time. I mean that's literally the reason why no one roots for them other than After stans ofc. There's nothing to root them for and this goes on for like four books. Also sorry that this is turning into some kind of rant but Tessa reeks of toxicity. She's just as fake and bad as Hardin's accent lmao

The problem with the kissing booth 2 and cheating is that it evilised and punished Noah for being a bit too flirty with a girl but never crossing the line while elle full on made out with another guy in front of thousands of people and yet its treated like a passing thought that isnt important. It acts like a girl cheating is okay and no big deal but its totally okay to get mad and punish men when you THINK they're cheating! Also, lee treats Rachel AWFULLY and shes always expected to forgive him and its a good thing when she does. Also, the way lee keeps treating elle is incredibly toxic and its STILL treated as okay. Personnally, i see the second movie as the worse thing that could happen to the first one.

My main problem with After is honestly that it’s ‘ not supposed to be ‘ something that it totally is, anyway. It’s ‘ not supposed to be ‘ a dating guide or something that you want for your future, yet Hardin and Tessa fight obsessively and fuck for at least two books and still end up together in the end. Sure, maybe they sought therapy, but that’s still two whole movies/books of fighting and toxicity. It’s not discouraging anything at the same rate that it’s not supposed to be encouraging anything. It really needed to take a cue from Waitress or something and had an actual walk away from toxicity if it wasn’t supposed to encourage anything because the story still ends with Hessa together.

nitpicking lit student here. did Anna Todd compare her novel to "The Taming of the Shrew" and not realise how hypocritical that sounds? A play about toxic relationships & the powerplay in relationships, while her book doesn't punish the main characters' toxic behaviour?? What's not clicking??? And the Wuthering Heights & Pride and Prejudice reference, yeah that isn't in After (or Cruel Intentions that she is referencing to). Maybe Heathcliff's horrid behaviour toward Catherine, but they're punished at the end, they don't fully romanticize his behaviour. Which Anna Todd clearly does. And Pride and Prejudice. I'll will not start with that because I'm doing my thesis on it & dearly love the novel, but I watched the debate Hardin & Tessa had about it and I'm sorry, Anna Todd clearly took the novel at face value & added it to her book as something university students would study. That debate made me cringe sooo hard 😣 it shows no understanding of the novel's underlying themes & issues that women have struggled with when the novel was published. It's a commentary on a wider society, utilized through the town of Meryton & the Bennet family. Sorry for whoever is reading this essay, misrepresentation of Austen novels is my ultimate pet peeve (& people using her characters incorrectly!)

Anyhow, I choose not to ignore any of the plot points from Gossip Girl (except the finale), because I still believe that Blair and Dan are soulmates and Dan wouldn't have traded Blair for a hotel. Frankly I think more room should be made in popular media for immoral romance. Like all things, this only works when it's handled seriously and respecfully to it audience. What we get instead is either melodramatic Lifetime movies where we already know the morally corrected ending is what will always happen or tonally confused nonsense like After that wants to have its cake and eat it b/c it's writers just aren't brave or smart enough to pull off what Dangerous Liaisons at least tried to do damn near two hundred years ago. tlbr: more bad romance!

Never read nor seen the After series before, but after watching this video - yikes! I agree that it's extremely unfair to blame a director for a movie's rating. Unless the director is also a producer, they're only the highest paid employee on set, and have to dance to whatever the studio or the produces dictate, including how explicit etc it can be. I do admire how the series' fans are so incredibly open about why they liked it in the first place - "need moar sexx and more toxicity NOW zomg!!!1111" Makes it really easy to spot the selling points, and it aint the elegant prose ... It's interesting that so much of the most popular romance does centre around relationships that are so blatantly toxic: After, Twilight, Fifty Shades, 9 and half Weeks, Dangerous Liaisons/Cruel Intentions, hell, pick up any Mills and Boon/Harlequin novel, etc etc. Not even in this era, but also over the past few hundred years, eg, The Sorrows of Young Werther, Madame Bovary, Wuthering Heights, etc (I'd argue Pride and Prejudice and other Austin novels also have plenty of toxicity to go around). I'd say it's probably better to consider why toxicity is so central to the popular romance genre as a whole, and why people read romance in the first place ... Some people in the chat have been arguing about why there's so much slut shaming, and I agree with plenty of the reasons offered, but let's not forget the basic reason: it's really easy to do! Don't like a particular woman or something she's doing? Nothing easier than picking some random excuse for why she's a slut! Voila, it's simple, direct, and often really really painful to the victim. For better or worse, human societies generally consider that chastity is a very important value for women to have. Slut shaming attempts to rob the woman in question of that value, and thus devalue her in the eyes of others, hence why it's so common; men do it, women do it, family members do it, people of different generations, races, classes, sexual orientations, etc all do it too. The male equivalent of these cheap shots would be degrading their assigned gender-value, ie 'masculinity', eg shaming them as weak, effeminate, gay, poor, unathletic, or generally unsuccessful at life. Also super-easy.

Just to add somt to what you said: the reason why ppl condemn problematic romance pieces so much more than, say, sympathetic murders is bc almost everyone knows that murder is super bad or at the very least they don't do it themselves for fear of repercussion or whatever. On the other hand, toxic or abusive relationships are pretty common and though some ppl in them know how the bad the relationship is and decide to stay for other reasons, a lot of the ppl in them don't really recognise the abuse as abuse, or expect all the toxic elements to resolve themselves if they just stay long enough, or turn a blind eye to the terrible mental and pysical toll it takes on them, or think there is nothing better out there, or any of the other dozens of terrible excuses both the abused and the abuser tell themselves to help fuel these relationships. And of course there’s no way to know for sure how much the media helps create and reproduce these ideas, but media is very involved with our culture and the way society perceives things. That’s not to say one movie like After is the cause of all of these systemic problems, but rather the fact that there are so many movies and tv shows and books and games that perpetuate these ideas - and there’s no other way to change this except opposing them one at a time.

The set up is exactly like Fifty Shades, fanfiction that got published, that got made into a movie. The first movie had a female director who did her best to salvage the unsalvageable and was rewarded for her efforts by getting fired and replaced with a man that the original writer thought would be 'truer' to the source material... also a toxic relationship being romanticized by a writer who isn't even self aware enough to know it's toxic

Exactly like I find it kind of disingenuous when people are like “I don’t understand why people like problematic ships” and I’m like it’s because it’s hot, it’s not because people want a relationship like that, some of those ships are just fun to imagine

It's not disingenuous to have an opinion different from yours. Some genuinely don't see the appeal of imagining yourself in toxic situations. I've had to read so many impassioned dissertations on why there's nothing wrong with y'all for liking your "pRoBLeMaTiC mEdiA", please don't act like it's impossible for someone to just not have the same tastes that you do.

The idea that people who speak up against harmful portrayals of relationships in media, even if they do so in an way that isn't "nuanced" genuinely want all "problematic" (that word being added to popular lexicon has truly been one of the worst things to happen to media discourse imo) media to be banned or that all stories must have characters who are unambiguously good to be very unfair. I think it's largely due to the reactionary culture we've been in for the last few years. The popular narrative is that artists are put under unfairly high standards for ethics. While, no I don't agree with every critique of every media and I do think some focus too much on singular examples rather than the bigger picture: the real tension is those attempting to hold media to the same standards we expect from everyone and those who think art shouldn't have moral standards at all. So often I hear about people feeling like they can't enjoy insert "problematic media" w/o guilt, but from my perspective I feel like you can't be critical of art without someone accusing you of trying to "cancel" or censor something. This is not at all meant to bash this video's creator. I very much enjoy this channel and her analysis, even if I don't always agree.

I saw the first movie and thpught it was ok at best. I knew since there are other books, After was going to get a sequel, I just didn't know when. Suddenly I saw lots of Movie commentaries on it out of the blue, so I watch all of those. After We Collided, to me at least, isn't a good movie. The toxic movie romance is strong in this one. The only redeemable thing about it was Trevor, cause he was really funny. But yeah, I don't like it, but unforchunately, a lot of other people did.

i'd say that while the first movie's pg13 rating does take away a portion or aspect of their toxic relationship, it doesn't "cure" it of its toxicity, and it also widens its potential audience to adolescents and teens. i think that's the first movie's main downfall, it's still toxic and it's being marketed to young girls who don't really have a lot else to go on when it comes to gauging healthy relationships and behaviors. because the narrative doesn't clearly and explicitly say that this behavior is wrong (since the characters are never punished for it outside their own relationship and don't face any long term consequences) (and even tho there is an underlying narrative there's a good chance that a large chunk of a young audience wouldn't really be able to pick up on it), that is when this movie romanticizes all the toxic shit within their relationship. i think there's still something to be said about the way after we collided handles the relationship too. i'm not saying that every portrayal of unhealthy relationships has to be reminiscent of a horror movie or that every narrative must deliver swift justice, but because after had its younger audience, it's a fair assumption to make that a chunk of that audience would return for the sequel, R rating or not. since the narrative doesn't encourage the audience to think critically and treats the story as any regular lighthearted romcom is what makes after "problematic"

this isn't really related to the video (which was great as always btw, love the transitions), but when i saw the duff book on your shelf, it reminded me of the fact that the book and movie are two completely different things (you know, book: new adult fiction that has a lot of sex and stuff in it, movie: any pg teen romance movie out there, but still good) and idk, it just got me to thinking how they're both so different yet enjoyable. it's not like cmbyn, which for me is something that i cant dissociate the book and movie bc they feel so connected and like they go together, they're both come from the same idea but stem different stories that i enjoy for different reasons. anyway, si just felt like saying that. idk why, the duff is a book that a weirdly come back to a lot, so i guess seeing it triggered my re-reading this year lmao

I actually liked the second movie more as well. Now knowing that it was a different director explains a lot. I just thought it was because the acting has gotten better because they had more experience now. But it may be the story telling instead. It was faster, more entertaining, more "sassy" and much more of a fun experience. The first one although I liked it as well (I haven't read the books) was definitely more "creepy" with all that close up scenes without dialogue or really slow dialogue ("what are you dreaming about" 😖😖😖 haunts me in my nightmares) The "vibe" in both movies is totally different now that I think about it.
