when I was age 20 I couldn't afford study in any design school but I didn't give up I went in garage to understand how cars work but at that time internet wasn't easy to use then I went for study in 3d software for cars designing what my imagination I am improving my designe and then started research about aerodynamic I don't know I became cars designer or not because I am age 30 now but I am happy for what I learned and I am doing this for my happiness and ll do this my happiness

Luciano, thank you for your video. I'm into car design, since I was 8, learning everything I could ever need to create the fastest and the most beautiful cars possible. I've been into 3D modeling at school, creating cars for PC games. After school, I spent some time to get an Engine Design degree, at the age of 20 turned to Industrial design as the closest thing to Transportation Design as I could get in my place. The thing was that my design quality wasn't becoming as good as I wanted, but I learnt a lot about design as a work, as something I don't want to draw, but have to. Over time, being a little older than other people, they found me a lot more creative that they are, due to being older, haha, although I felt sometimes younger than they are! While the real thing for me was that I had far more knowledge in car design, shades and lights, as well as technical degree which made my ideas more stable to define them to the engineers. In the end things changed, I dropped out because of financial difficulties. I was so sad, it's been some time since I stopped drawing (but I've never stopped dreaming and creating, over time had more and more ideas!). Now I feel like I need to draw again and a lot. Over time I'm safe to say I have a very good taste in car design, but after learning, I separate it in 2 things: design as a pure beatiful things and design as a new thing. Which means I either draw by the rules or against them, so I don't think you should have problems with creativity over time. I saw many many projects by young students and most of them look as if they'd never be applied to an actual car or reflect. Some questions: - can you tell us more about the design process as team management? - how do one (me, for example) create a portfolio from scratch? how big should be? what would you want to see there? details or creativity? applicable things or pure emotional aspect? I thought to draw a line of different cars (including development sketches, selection and etc.), but would that be unnecessary? - are there any Car Design agencies hiring/having contacts and etc. (My father is an opera singer, he had various agents to help him find contracts, so I wonder if it's applicable to car design industry.) A little longer question: Once, I've heard that a designer should never draw things he doesn't want or like, as you might regret about it. I've been thinking to myself, I'm again getting biased about the thing I should do. I know a lot about supercars, safe to say everything: from engineering of chassis to basic suspension design, engines are piece of cake, while on the other hand design is what I want to see, the real reason for everything. The point of getting an engine design degree was just make sure the exterior design would be fulfilled with technical abilities, thus it's gonna be harmony. And I worry about all my expertise in racing stuff is gonna be missed in transportational design as a mean of work-to-home transport. Everyone seems to draw basic boxes with zero height tires as their final designs. The current car design (production) seems to hit a wall of shape, the cars only differ by lights, same proportions everywhere (I don't agree on blaming safety reasons). (Btw, I don't blame Duster ;) Altough it's not fast, the shape is distinct and I quite liked it) If all cars looked good enough, I'd never want to become a designer, as it's a point of where I'm confident that I know how things should like (a beautiful car), on the other hand in a portfolio I'd need to include a "fresh look" (what I'd consider a bad design, but somehow I have to do it, as a professional). So there are 2 things fighting in me: an engineering designer as a full part of creation and "just a designer" where all my thing is pencils, Copics and clays. The latter is easier and more pure, but I will regret a lot if I will not accomplish it with creating beautiful cars. Which one of these 2 approaches are real nowadays? And which way should be taken to accomplish this and others? Thank you! Alex. I'll be getting your books now. p.s. When it comes to creation, a pen and paper is always the best for me. I think it is not possible to create as complicated and beautiful curves on a PC as on paper. p.p.s. I once had a contract in a small car company, which looked promising on me (almost hired me), but I skipped as I couldn't go there in the time.

Hi Luciano, my name is Julian and I am 17 years old and in my last year of high school in Australia and I am strongly considering a career in automotive design. However, there are no design schools in Australia that I know of and due to the lack of a strong car industry in Australia, I am very unsure on what the pathways are for someone in my situation. The universities in my area also don't offer automotive design, but do offer industrial design, architecture, and also engineering pathways. What is the best option for me to choose so I can pursue my lifelong dream of becoming an automotive designer? Thank you so much for replying. I greatly appreciate it.

Hi there, you have the perfect age :)! I understand for you can be difficult but this is what I found in this excellent car design website: cardesignnews.com/directory?Keywords=&TabName=Schools&OrderBy=Alphabetical&Specialism=&Region=&Country=172928&Location=1729283 schools in Australia, Monash University is kind of known in car design environment. Check it out and let me know ;)

@@LucianoBove Thank you for the resources and the reply :) However I just discovered a problem due to my location. Monash University and RMIT are both in Melbourne which is on the other side of where I live, which is in Western Australia. Due to this I would very likely have to get an industrial design degree or an architecture degree. Does this make it harder for me to get into car design or can these both be direct pathways into the car design industry?

Hello, Luciano. Thanks a lot for the video. If you'll have a time, could you please tell more about automotive 3D modelling field. I guess it will be very useful for many people. I saw the comment below, that there's no the same age board, as it is for the car designers. But there is not so much information about car 3D modelling field you can find actually. How much Alias modellers are in demand today? Is it the same competitive? Thanks a lot again.
@LucianoBove
6 жыл бұрын
You are right for design virtual modelers no age factor, but we tend today to hire design students that know how to model with Alias or other 3D softwares because they feel car design better than students trained in engineering universities or in technical schools. Less competition and good requests for jobs.

I am bit of a mess... I am 20 years old, graphic designer with middle school diploma. Here, in Croatia car design studio does not exist and traveling to some closes countries is expensive for me. So, when I finished middle school of applied arts and crafts, decided to study myself (note that during 4 years of school I have been practicing sketches of car design). I have been coming to Auto(r) already for 6 years, consulting with Peter Stevens, Philip Nemeth, you and other... And I know how to be designer of any kind, as you said I've getting really creative so to me it doesn't matter is it about graphic, architecture, car design, product design... I have been pushing boundaries these past years. But, sadly, I don't bachelor :( So, what I really want to ask you, if I go for a job as car designer with this, what is actually my value?
@LucianoBove
7 жыл бұрын
Jakov today to hire a car designer there are some prerequisites to fullfil as a standard...like a Bachelor in Transportation Design or Industrial Design....some Car companies accept also Engineering or Architecture; however nowadays this is real rare because those Universities do not have a real 3 or 4 years Transportation Design course. In your case I would suggest to do architecture or Product Design in your country and after get a Master in Transportation Design abroad...

Hi, im currently an Art student in the caribbean, im not directly studying cars or design there, but in my own time that is my passion, or one of, however its something im willing to, and want to commit to, im currently 20 years old and heading into my second year, my question on this is, do you think someone who goes to a Fine arts school would be able to get into car design? Because i've been passionate about cars my whole life, but i havent spent all that time designing cars, but i've always had ideas, im recently beginning to put them on paper and work towards the dream, i dont have a 100% solid idea of my chances right now, but i am indeed passionate about it in the sense that it feels like a calling, i understand the competition but going to an art school i am already used to this, my concerns are more technical, such as the Ways for you to get into car design, and i dont just mean working for another production line. I speak of having one's own enterprise composed of one's own designs and ideas, and one's own vision, particularly the soul behind the make itself. What would be your advice for someone seeking to apply that into the real world who isnt strictly speaking from a car design school? How much would a portfolio contribute in that position? In terms of the artist view, i see myself inspired by the likes of aston martin, bmw, and koenigsegg so my vision falls in line with walking within such footsteps. I am what you could consider a car enthusiast, i know a thing or 2 about how cars work and i have my own innovative ideas i would love to put into motion someday, however im not exactly the most mechanically inclined as probably someone who studies the intricacies of a car's technicalities, however often times im aware this is why it is a team that works on a vehicle and not just one person. But for someone with a vision, as an artist with a passion for cars, who wants to both design and direct, how would you advise that person take his steps into the world of the industry, seeking that career path? Hope you take the time to respond, or see this comment, thanks.

+Lukas Industrial Design is broken into three categories--products (me), transportation and commercial building interiors. When someone studies Industrial Design they are learning all but veer into a concentration of emphasis at some point. In other words, there is no need for lets say a Degree in Automotive Design because that would by definition leave out a huge amount of required study and it makes no sense. When you see an Industrial Design as courses and degrees, thats (to me) also wrong because it leaves out study before that including Design, Graphic Design, Art History, Drawing, Architecture, Materials, Engineering, Human Factors/Ergonomics. What im trying to convey is this--dont worry about a specific study, get to it via all your OTHER studies in art and design first. Second, worry about what kind of portfolio you are building. I know many active designers who had very little formal education--they are simply fantastic designers with fantastic ideas and able to articulate that very well both verbally and in writing and in drawing. They have a gift. Do you? Third, as far as getting a job in a car company, unless you are truly fantastic and young, its going to be extremely difficult even in the best of circumstances. BUT, you can get to that via other design work you do in some other design environment, like having your designs for toasters or tiny homes or baby stollers adopted in the marketplace. Also, you can also work independently in the car field by selling designs or making-selling designs for a part of a car, like the next rear view mirror. Think broadly, be flexible and work on your book. Dont limit yourself so narrowly, it will never work. As your book improves, keep showing it to design teachers and get feedback on any design that might be good. Most portfolios Ive seen are utter, silly garbage--but not all.
