We did First Language Lessons Level 1 in 1st grade and REALLY enjoyed it, but I was set on BJU English going forward. We used BJU for 2nd grade and about half of 3rd grade when we decided to put it down. My daughter hated it. Fast forward to 4th grade, she started Fix It Grammar toward the end of year and is now finishing it up in 5th grade and we really like it. But what I have noticed is that she has no trouble with anything she learned as memory work way back in First Language Lessons, but she really struggles to remember things that have been learned with traditional methods since then. So I kind of wish that we had continued with FLL earlier on and might do it that way with the next two kids. 😊

Nothing wrong with a bridge for language arts!!! We had to use a few phonics curriculums with my twins and the same things are covered!!! We love the well trained mind language lessons!!! We love sentence diagraming!!!

It's not everyone who wants diagramming...but I definitely do.

Sounds complicated and time consuming! Foundations D focuses heavily on reading and includes the other language arts components in a wonderful, age-appropriate way. (For those who want to shift to a spelling focus, it is easy to do that too.) I found it to be great for both of my kids during their 1st grade years. 20-30 min per day and we were completely finished with language arts for the day, and I spent mere minutes a week in planning. Also, LOE has all of their spelling rules free on their website, but Foundations and Essentials go into a lot more detail about how and when to apply them. I have been through Foundations twice and Essentials almost three times, and I have seen so much my kids would have missed if we had just tried to use the rules on their own.

Thanks for the feedback. I waffled a lot on whether or not to do level D. I even got a teacher's manual to look through. It just wasn't a fit for me the way level A-C were. We'll see what happens...

How many lessons a week did you do on average with LOE? and did you start with cursive or manuscript?

I started with manuscript. And we did foundations 5 days a week. How many lessons really depended on how fast we moved through them. Some days we did whole lesson other days we split them up into more than one day.

Oh, sheesh. That may have been part of your problem. My kindergarteners needed to split nearly all the C lessons. They are written to take about 45-60 min each, which is too much in one sitting for a young kid (and more than the attention span of a younger sib to stay occupied). Splitting them was super easy though. We just did half of the activities one day and half the next. For Foundations D, we split each lesson over 3 (sometimes 4) days to keep to that age-appropriate 20-30 min daily session.

We definitely split more up in C than in A or B. I really let how my daughter was responding determine that. However, my daughter really caught on to phonics & reading very easily. Don't get me wrong, I didn't move away from level D because we didn't like A-C. I loved it and will be using it again with my next 2 kiddos. :)
