The black "rain" that fell after Godzilla used his atomic breath is a nod to the black rain that fell after the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ash, dirt, and soil got carried into the atmosphere where it mixed with radioactive fallout and water. When it fell the people said it was like tar, and that it burned. There are fragments of old buildings and old clothes that are still stained and on display in the Hiroshima memorial. It's one of the most haunting places I've ever been in.

Godzilla Minus One (2023) earned USD$115 million against a production budget of USD$10 million - that’s 11 times its production budget. The film won 61 awards from 125 nominations, Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards and three honours at the prestigious 16th Asian Film Awards. Now, Godzilla Minus One is the number 1 film on Netflix.

They are saluting Godzilla. Despite the death and destruction he caused, he was a force of nature and powerful opponent they overcame, still worthy of respect, even in defeat.

No, they aren't. Apart from some basic knowledge of Japanese culture, especially from World War 2, it is clearly stated in the novelization they are saluting Godzilla

That's correct. For we Japanese audience this scene was easily understood as saluting to Godzilla. Not only paying respect to this powerful enemy, but also sympathizing that Godzilla is another victim of nuclear weapon made by human.

The Japanese view is that Gojira is both a threat and a victim of humanity. The evil weapon created by mankind has awakened him from his slumber. And mankind killed him because of mankind's selfishness. That is why they saluted his death.

How did you not notice the Godzilla cells on Norikos neck at the end? How did you think she survived? Great reaction!❤

Well expected her to he alive for story. So wasn’t really something i questioned “why”. Its a movie lol. But yeah But i see people telling me about the cells so i know now. But i dunno. I see a lizard shooting atomic breath.
They adjusted to shoot Akiko according to her nap time! They shot crying scenes before her nap, and shot her actings after her nap.

Y'all just gave some new insight on why Tachibana and Koichi weren't killed on Odo Island. Y'all said it's because neither of them attacked Godzilla by shooting at it. That makes total sense! Godzilla was minding his own business until one of the mechanics freaked and shot. Godzilla simply defended himself. Pre-mutated Godzilla already had the regenerative ability as confirmed by the director. Even had Koichi loaded Godzilla up with lead Godzilla would have still survived.
Godzilla is a real force of nature in Godzilla Minus One. He’s witnessed his habit being destroyed by sea battles of World War II in the Pacific. He has survived a nuclear test, which has woke him and destroyed his food supply in that part of the ocean. So, he’s extremely pissed off. Also, he is metaphor for Japan fear to live within post war nuclear era and the potential destructive capabilities having been through Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The film also touches on pain of defeat, post war guilt, having to live on when so many have died in war and healing and rebuilding.

He showed up in the movie with a bad attitude, attacked Oto island without provocation. Woke up with bad attitude the bomb just made him bigger and allowed him to attack everything.

when Shikishima sees the "specially made" boat, I'm reminded of the first time Luke Skywalker sees the Millenium Falcon. you can insert the dialog here: Shikishima, "What a piece of junk!" Noda, "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts. Plus, I made a few special modifications myself...."😆

Yes, minesweepers are smaller boats and usually made of wood: nothing metal to set off magnetic mines and not much of an engine to activate a mine with an acoustical trigger, and their 'draft' (the part of the boat that's underwater) doesn't go too deep, so there's less of a chance they'll run into a contact mine. Of course that also means even minor damage can turn 'em into matchsticks.

If THIS Godzilla goes up against King Ghidora, Ghidora’s getting one shot. I have no idea how anything survives even a near miss from this atomic breath.

In 1945 the plain he was in, the Zero had an armament that typically included two 20 mm cannons, two 7.7 mm (.303 in) machine guns. However, those guns point forwerd and have NO gimble, so they point up at a 30ish degree angle and are set to converge at about 500 feet out. So all Godzilla would have to do is stand up then step on the plain. IE if he would have fired, he would have died and then Godzilla would have gone on to kill the rest. Had he been able to fire Godzilla up while flying, Perhaps he could have done the job, especially if he had a bomb or two to throw in.

"regenerate" is the proper term for godzilla's changes. strictly speaking textbook biology, "evolve" applies only to genetic changes in an entire species or specific population of breeding animals passed along over successive generations -- individual creatures cannot evolve. each individual creature represents only a step in an evolutionary chain of development.
@yaboyrockleemovies

He means literally Evolve as a Pokemon would. (Your explanation is true in the real world but MAY or may not apply in a fictional setting..which this is. Its a dinosaur that fires atomic breath and couldn’t do that before the nuke because of mutation which we said Evolve. Most people would just let that go) Its a reasonable way to describe a fictional character literally leveling up in power and ability. If we really wanted to nitpick. The word he wants his mutation. Because he/we thought Godzilla was changing during the battle. Not just healing.
@aarrgghh

@@yaboyrockleemovies yeah, i'm talking real world evolution, strictly textbook as i said, which you also acknowledge as true (where even "mutation" wouldn't apply to godzilla). i'm just letting folks know the difference, because the theory's been a perennial hot topic that's regularly mistaken, misquoted, misused and maligned since it was introduced a century and a half ago.
