Ho my goodness, Nina! You made the “greys tutorial” I asked you! I feel so grateful. And you really knocked this lesson out of the park. Wow, this is one of the most valuable lesson I ever watched! It is kind of “what no professional will ever tell you”: and then you tell us! Not just the how but also the why: no formula, but the logic behind (and this is rare and invaluable). Thank you, thank you, thank you! Everything make much more sens now. I’m so glad I dared asking you all these questions about greys. Haha, I’m sorry if I have been a little too enthousiast about this tutorial, but I’m so happy now you took the time, not only to do it, but to think about it thoroughly as you did: and honestly it surpasses all expectations. I really can’t express you all my gratitude for each minute of this enlightening tutorial you made with devotion and expertise. I was not lying, you are the real deal: a great artist doubled with an excellent teacher. Just the best around.

One more question (sorry): does that idea to limit ourselves to three main « sort of » primary colors to achieve color harmony also translate to « opaque » painting such as oil, gouache or acrylic (I know you do oil)? Maybe adding white to those three? Or does opaque mediums are a complete beast of its own to this regard? Thank you!

Finally someone points out the importance of greys. As a side effect you achieve a color harmonic. Thank you for that.

So much information. I feel like I should be taking notes. I got a lot of training when I was young, but always found color theory so boring, I just wanted to get to the painting, and always went with instinct when it came to color. Instinct isn’t enough. Now getting back to basics, I really agree with sticking to three primary colors and learning everything you can about them. It’s helped me a lot.

This is an incredible gold mine of information. Thank you so much for sharing it. Everyone talks about the importance of greys but this demonstration really gives the viewer tangible strategies to use in their paintings to take them to the next levels in a very clear and understandable format.

Love this, thank you! I fell in love with cerulean & potters pink for a cool, softly granulating lighter gray. Then, after I mulled some PB33 (manganese blue) and just out of curiosity, mixed a handmade potters pink-I got a darker version of that cool gray. No idea why I’m so hooked on this particular gray…but, I bought more pigments and I’m going to make some for myself so I can easily use it when needed. I used it in a beach scene, adding just a touch more blue for the sky, a “white sand” beach, just my lightest value of the gray, adding a touch more of potters pink for shadows. Or…maybe my vision is just getting worse faster than we thought it would 😂

Nina, you have the special ability to explain technical things in an easy to understand way. So much of this makes sense. I'm going to do the work and compile a mixing greys chart for myself because I think it's important for understanding color. Seeing this and actually mixing the colors will be valuable for me. Thanks for the push this video has given me. 🎨🖌♥
