If you study this troop's behavior over a period of time they each definitely have their own distinct personalities. The sister girls are not fighting. 🤨 Being naughty, mischievous and competing? Yes! Well one could say Tayari is the dominant female BUT I am doubting this scenario lately. Iriki is definitely stepping up making her presence and position known in the troop no doubt! In this scenario this behavior merely is "rough play fighting" and a game of "hit tag you're it" running alongside one another, running past one another and slapping "your opponent" or a tree branch (showing off) and chest beating kinda like what D'Jeeco does to the lady wives. D'Jeeco also does this when he wants the lady wives to stop doing a particular thing. Again it has to be interpreted based on the situation at that particular time. The same gestures can have different meanings. Slapping the ground, or chest beating could mean "a threat is approaching," or "I'm trying to get your attention, because I just tagged you, but I've got the upper hand..ha ha, or I won...victory!" The latter in this case 👍. An open hand chest beat and stomping the ground means "let's play rough" in which both sisters do quite often, which also includes raising both arms and slapping/pounding each other on the head. Tayari also does chest beating and stomping the ground when she is trying to locate her husband D'Jeeco "hey where are you?" or "I feel uneasy about something". Now I've noticed when Iriki is in naughty looting mode she kidnaps Jabali..."you keep stealing my baby so I'm gonna steal yours, oh and look I can run far with your baby AND with my baby under belly". Again showing off...and poor baby Jabali gets caught in tug of war cross hairs and dragged a half mile, or stepped on, but Tayari does rescue Jabali when it happens 👍. Again it's just the rough gorilla way of life, and part of developing personalities in a social setting amongst the troop. These lovely lady wives here are competing for ranking top female in the troop, which is what female gorillas do, in an antagonistic sort of way. These sisters are just 11 years old so...it's tit for tat for now. They are trying to assert dominance over one another during this rough playing 😃. Oh asserting dominance can also be demonstrated when Tayari sits on Jabali and wants him too stay put (I know...looks weird). Anyhow D'Jeeco is like, "look if it gets out of hand I'll establish order...otherwise I'll be over there in another part of the enclosure leg stretching, having a veggie cocktail 🍸 and enjoying nature...bye!" 🤣

I can hardly watch this family because of the way Little Jabali is treated by his mother. I know there have been some still shots of her sleeping with him or feeding him but my gosh that poor baby just wants his mom to hold him. Breaks my heart.
@RichardPennetti

When Jabali was first born, many people pressured the zoo to take him away from her she had no interest in him. She was too young to have had a baby. And, had no maternal interest in him. He hardly ever nursed. She denied him more than she fed him. No cuddles no nothing. I guess he turned out ok.

I didn't start watching this family until fairly recently so I know that Jabali is fine now. But if I had seen these videos back then I would've lost my mind seeing that baby treated so horribly! Just nuts! I imagine the zoo must have supplemented his feeding with bottles in the first year, because I can't imagine her spending enough time nursing him. She barely ever lifts him above her feet. And she started to put him on her back long before he was old enough.

Perhaps so! WE know that it’s construction so there’s nothing to be afraid of. But all they know is that there are loud scary noises from next door / old home 🧐
@mariabitry4108

This behavior doesn't have nothing to be with the construction, is about female dominance. I think Tayari is jealous about Iriki and Iriki have had enough with Tayari bullying, because they both have offspring of DJs with just few months between them and even is very subtle Iriki is wining DJ preferences. Just because Tayari is too much to handle. Sorry for all the Tayari fans. With the last fight between the female that DJ have to intervene and even Iriki get some of the discipline she shows she is not a bit afraid of Tay, she just runs out of patience with her sister. Just pray that Tay got it!!!, because for an smart gorrilla like many claim she is, she have been beaten too much.
@jessc7039

@@mariabitry4108 You could be correct about everything you just suggested. No one will ever know for sure. But I think this video implies that the construction noises made things worse. Construction noises are a noise pollution that would negatively impact the average human family. But we would know the direct cause of it, this family does not know what this is-they can only hear the loud penetrating noises. The feeling of being unsafe in your own home can make everyone very tense, uneasy and exasperate any existing discontent 😬 Perhaps this is why Tayari has been looking for a way out?

That's not normally functioning gorilla behavior. That's gorillas with issues. I wish the zoos would take on the responsibility of gorillas' behavioral health, not just physical. It's really they're responsibility, and healthy gorillas today are a better guarantee of healthy future generations. That's a big deal considering these animals are critically endangered.

@michaelmannix1604

Well gee, they keep looking toward the visitors and flinching. It looks much less to me now like they're "competing" and more like they're asserting their presence, which ordinarily wouldn't be an issue if not for the fact that they both have infants to protect; D'jeeco is more accustomed to this enclosure, and he also doesn't do very much in the way of parenting, so naturally he isn't as concerned. I mean, think about it: it wasn't until visitors started pouring in from after the lockdown that the two sisters started acting restlessly. Almost always, you can tell they're already tense before an outburst through how they stare in the direction of the visitors, tightening their posture and beating their chests. (Btw, the "tapping" on each other's heads is a common behavior even in wild gorillas that is meant to inspire others to follow their lead, not to agitate them. Obviously, there's strength in numbers, and it's their instinct to rally each other to further assert their troop's presence to threats-particularly when they're surrounded.) I've come to really hate this enclosure. It's much too open, and very noisy. They should've better prepared for the sisters' arrival. Instead, viewers are busy blaming the gorillas for their own anxieties...

I want to say that they can’t see outside at all, so they don’t know how many tourists there are…Zookeeper is already trying to solve the problem, so I don’t think it’s all about the relationship between tourists, it’s purely the problem of the two sisters…🙂
@michaelmannix1604
2 жыл бұрын
@@Cloud76721 Um... You can literally see the visitors in several videos through the glass windows. There are windows on almost every side of the enclosure. I'm sure the keepers are doing what they can, but the layout is just bad. This same type of open enclosure was used in London Zoo, and it distressed the gorillas so much that one broke the windows and escaped. While that doesn't appear possible here, they shouldn't have to feel anxious whenever they go outside.
@Cloud76721
2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmannix1604 I mean that there is a layer of paper on the windows that they can’t see outside, so only tourists can see them, they actually can’t see the outside. It’s also to reduce their tension, but not all gorillas don’t like tourists. At least I’m sure D’jeeco doesn’t hate it. Although not every zoo can do its best, but at the Taipei Zoo, they do their best to take care of them…so don’t worry too much. Besides, these two sisters had their own problems in the previous zoo, they don’t just have such a situation now…
@michaelmannix1604
2 жыл бұрын
@@Cloud76721 If we can see visitors on the other side of the enclosure through both the glass that the videographer is behind and the opposing windows all the way across, obviously the gorillas can see them too. They have the same visual perception as humans. Even if they WERE heavily tinted, camera flashes will show through and should be prohibited. If the windows weren't floor length, it might be fine, but it's a bit late to fix that. They would need to install a low guardrail on the visitors' side to hide their lower bodies (standing is perceived as threatening by gorillas, but almost no visitors ever kneel to look at them anywhere in the world). As for Tayari and Iriki's personal histories, sure, they're sisters, so obviously they have their bad days. I don't even care about them fighting. That's what gorillas do. That doesn't mean they should be tormented by obnoxious guests, even if the guests don't realize they're unnerving them. Even so, they didn't appear this agitated until after the lockdown, especially now that they both have children. They need privacy, end of story.
@Cloud76721

@@michaelmannix1604 Since they're in the zoo, of course there will be tourists visiting them. According to what you said, it would be better for tourists not to visit them...there are many animals in the zoo to take care of, not just caring for gorillas. If you are worried about their physical and mental health, then I think let them return to the wild...After all, Africa is their habitat, and they are relatively free and will not be disturbed…🙂
