However, this video explained it better and it gave me my hope back to pursue learning manicure:) thank you!

So everyone says you need to cut the proximal nail fold for gel x nails to last long and I'm not sure about what to do now. Can you get them to last long only by pushing the skin back? Or do you need to cut it but it's not good for you
@TeriWellsNails
Ай бұрын
You don’t need to cut the proximal nail fold for gel x to last. You have to have to remove the cuticle (clear/white skin) off your nail plate. The fake nails won’t stick to the skin which will cause them to lift quickly. People remove the proximal nail fold for aesthetics. They just like the look

The cuticle is the clear skin that grows on your nail plate. It grows underneath the proximal nail fold. All you have to do is push it off the nail plate because it causes your polish to lift.

If you search it up, youll find that indeed cuticles are important in keeping bacteria away. You can even see that from the difference between cutting/pushing cuticles and not doing it. if you do it, there'll be a gap that allows for bacteria to enter.

I started doing it again with my nails and i got infections on two nails now... Its completely because of cutting the cuticle. A space is left open and bacteria can get in.

In general they do, but bear in mind that most people sort of misuse the term "cuticle" when it comes to cosmetics. And colloquially people use cuticle to refer to something that sort of has more specific/detailed names... On the verge of sounding crass here - everyone calls female genitals a vagina. They don't mention the major or minor labia or the uretha - they just call the whole thing the vagina - when that's just the opening. >_

A really dry overgrown cuticle is sort of clear and more like a white scaling on top of the nail. The proximal nail fold can be overgrown and stretch out. It's often "keratinized" as a result of folks cutting it. Generally you want to push the little lip back - not cut it off. If you keep pushing it back gently every few days, after a few weeks, it'll gradually sort of be fine staying back . When you cut it, it just makes it regrow back tougher and faster because your body is trying to protect the stuff under it. Bear in mind, your skin is made up of multiple layers - most of the outer portion of your skin are dead cells that protect the soft vulnerable stuff under - the stuff that has blood supply and creates the skin cells. Your nail is the same. That little "flap" that you can push back that looks more like skin than nail is the proximal nail fold. Again - cuticle is basically a thin layer of residue on top of the surface of the nail.
