Did you know that dense breast tissue hides up to 50% of cancers on a mammogram? That means if you have dense breasts, your cancer could go undiagnosed. Learn more about dense breasts and other risk factors for breast cancer at breasthealthresources.org
So, how do you know if you have dense breasts?
Half of women over age 40 have dense breasts. They can be in large, small, perky, or saggy breasts. You can't tell if you have dense breasts by how they look or feel. The only way to tell is to get a mammogram.
If your mammogram results don't tell you whether your breasts are dense, call your doctor and ask! And if you do have dense breasts, you can ask for an ultrasound. On an ultrasound, the dense tissue is still white, but the cancer is black, making it easier to see.
Breasts range in density from A (not so dense) to D (extremely dense). If you have extremely dense breast tissue, an MRI might be helpful. But MRIs aren't right for everyone, so talk to your doctor.
So, do you have dense breasts? Find out! And if you do, ask for an ultrasound or an MRI every year, in addition to your mammogram.
