The origin of the 13 Dhutanga practices stems from the spiritual journey of Prince Siddhartha (Gautama Buddha). After witnessing the four truths of life, he renounced his royal life to seek the truth. Initially, he practiced extreme asceticism but realized that the Middle Way was the key to enlightenment.
Practicing the 13 Dhutanga practices brings immense benefits to the practitioner. According to the Mi Tien Van Dap Sutra, a monk who upholds the 13 Dhutanga practices will reach a state close to Nirvana, while bringing immeasurable benefits to sentient beings. The practitioner can develop 28 transcendent virtues such as maintaining a pure life, living peacefully, not creating sins, reducing suffering for others, being fearless, diligent on the path of evolution, letting go of conflicts, practicing self-discipline, practicing correctly, achieving tranquility, escaping afflictions, abandoning attachment, anger, and delusion, eliminating ego attachment, overcoming doubt and laziness, and cultivating patience.
Furthermore, the 13 Dhutanga practices are likened to earth, water, fire, wind, medicine, and the elixir of immortality, capable of nurturing wholesome qualities, cleansing defilements, burning afflictions, blowing away worldly desires, healing mental illnesses, and bringing immortality.
However, practicing Dhutanga is not easy, requiring the practitioner to possess many factors both spiritually and physically, such as great faith, a sense of shame, good health, proficiency in seeking the truth, enthusiasm and maturity, wisdom, eagerness to learn and knowledge, firm commitment, less focus on others' faults, and dwelling in compassion.
Although not everyone needs to practice Dhutanga to attain enlightenment, the benefits it brings are undeniable. Even King-Buddha Tran Nhan Tong practiced the 13 Dhutanga practices right after becoming a monk.
