Glial cells are various types of brain cells. There are 3 main types of glial cells - astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglial cells. These cells protect neurons, help neurons pass information, and keep the brain healthy.
These group of cells were relegated to a footnote in neurobiological history but in the last two decades, neuroscience has found that these cells not only take out the brain's garbage and maintain it, they might also be a crucial component to deciphering our thoughts and consciousness!
