If you use App Engine, and you want you services to shut down after X minutes of inactivity (to save cost), be aware that your smoke tests will effectively keep your App Engine server running 24/7.

Good point! With the App Engine configuration you're describing, leaving more time between each smoke test will cost less. With Cloud Run on the other hand, you pay per request and not per active instance, so you can run your smoke tests more often.
