The inference is that larger avocado trees such as Hass won't grow well in containers. So specifically, what bad things would happen? Would the tree suddenly die once it reaches a certain size?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip: The larger the avocado tree, it will do less well in a container. You will likely not get good fruit production. The roots of a bigger avocado tree needs to spread out more. I don't believe the tree would die as long as you take good care of it and you use the right kind of soil and water well, but your fruit production will likely not be great. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!

I'm envious of the gardeners in Southern California who have been able to find GEM avocados in 5 gal size containers at reasonable prices. Nurseries in Northern California only sell 15 gal ones that are over $100. That is quite an investment when a 5 gal size is a good way to start when I want to put them in a container. I have read that some have even spotted the GEM at some of the Lowe's and Home Depot in the Southern California recently. I'm willing to wait until the Spring or even next year if I could find a 5 gal one closer to home. Perhaps by then, they might be easier to find. If not, I might have to settle for a Reed to grow in a container. I have room for only one more. I planted a 5 gal size Sir Prize in a half size wine barrel in June of this year, and it has already grown at least a foot and half and is very healthy.

Hi Laura: I have heard some say they have found GEMs at their local Home Depot or Lowe's. I personally went to some Lowe's to find the GEM but to no luck. Great to hear that your Sir Prize is doing well! I really like the Reed, definitely one of my favorite avocado trees. Good luck finding your GEM, hope you find one in the near future. If you have limited space & no snow cold frost to worry about can't you grow the in large bottomless containers (containers which are open to the ground). I find it dwarfs them to some extent but not as restrictive as using containers with bottoms the roots extending from the rootball in the container extends down into the ground & accesses micronutrients water etc plus it produces more fruits when planted in this way. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this method of containerising fruit trees
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard

Hi Geriann: I think your question is an interesting one. I think your idea is a good idea if you like the look of the avo trees in boxes/containers or you can simply just plant them in the ground as well. You are correct that the containers do stunt their growth and I believe reduces fruit production. But the boxes/containers do look nice and neat, but I think if you are going to plant them in the bottomless containers, it may be better to just plant them in the ground since a lot of the roots are close to the surface of the tree as well and the box would restricts those surface roots. But if you like the look of the avo trees in the boxes or containers, I think your idea of cutting the bottom is a good idea. One of the reasons I plant some of my avo trees in containers is that I like to move them around if I need to and sometimes I even give them away as presents. Thank you for your interesting question and thank you for watching!

I will be transplanting my SirPrize tree from my half wine barrel container that was put in June into the ground. After reading about which trees would do better in containers, I realized that this was the wrong tree to put in the container since it grew a whole foot in just a couple of months and is very healthy! After watching your other updated videos of your transplanted Reed, I'm afraid removing it from this barrel might cost me to lose this tree since the root ball might be huge and will suffer some damage.

Hi Laura: I think it is a great idea that you are transplanting your Sir Prize to the ground. I previously transplanted my Sir Prize to the ground and it has ground really fast after I put it in the ground. It is tricky tranplanting avocado trees, but I think you will be in a better position than I was since you will be transplanting from a half wine barrel container to the ground. The Reed I transplanted was already in the ground and I relocated to another area in the ground which was not a good idea since a big portion of the root ball just crumbled when I tried to dig it up. Good luck with your transplant and thank you for watching!

Thanks for your quick response. Do you think there will be a huge root ball/roots that has filled completely the half wine barrel such as the case when a 5 or 15 gal tree has to be removed from their containers to be transplanted? The wine half barrel is filled currently with Gary's Top Pot.@@johnnysworld-backyardorchard

Hi Neal: I definitely do agree with you that container growing is not the best option for avocado trees versus planting them in the ground. I really do like how they look in the containers and certain varieties should produce some good fruit although not as much as if they were planted in the ground. Hi V Martinez: it really also depends on the soil you are using. If you are using well draining soil for your avo trees, then you can water more frequently than if you had less well draining soil which you want to be careful not to water too much to cause root rot. Also, watering depends where you live as well and the weather. But generally speaking, I do water about twice a week during the winter months and more frequently during the summer months. I meant to write that the GEM for a 5 gal in the Bay Area was over $100 and the 15 gal was over $250! I need to get to Southern California and visit friends in the spring and stop in Fallbrook or somewhere in Orange County. Does anyone know of any nurseries in Orange County where there are GEMs for sale? Are your container trees producing enough to your satisfaction? Do you have an updated video?
@johnnysworld-backyardorchard
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura: ouch, those are expensive. In Orange County, I have seen GEMs at Laguna Hills Nursery in Santa Ana, but they are bit expensive there too. You can also try Louie's Nursery in Riverside or Garden View Nursery in Irwindale, CA. All these places, I would call first to make sure they have them in stock. In Fallbrook, GEMs tend to be much cheaper, some great places to buy are at Subtropical Nursery and Maddock Nursery. A lot of my container trees are still young but they are growing and hopefully will get more production this coming year. Last year's production was a bit weak but I do have some still hanging on and will be harvesting some soon. I will do an update on my container trees in the near future.
