Diarrhea is a common condition causing frequent loose or watery bowel movements. It can be caused by a different conditions like infections, IBS, food intolerance, and certain medications.
One of the main causes of diarrhea is infection, either by viruses, bacteria, or parasites. The most common viral infections are rotavirus and norovirus, while bacterial infections are often caused by E. coli or Salmonella. Parasitic infections can be from Giardia or Cryptosporidium.
Another cause is Lactose intolerance where the body cannot digest lactose which is the sugar found in milk and dairy products, leading to diarrhea and bloating. Another one is gluten intolerance from eating bread. As well as IBS Irritable bowel syndrome.
Certain medications such as antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and laxatives can also cause diarrhea as a side effect.
Dehydration is a potential complication of diarrhea. It is important to drink plenty of fluids, like water or sports drinks and in severe cases you might need intravenous fluids.
Treatment for diarrhea depends on the underlying cause. In many cases, the condition will resolve on its own within a few days by taking probiotics and eating boiled potatoes, rice and pasta. In severe cases, medication may be necessary to treat the underlying cause like giving antibiotics for bacterial infection.
