Ilex crenata exists in many different species. Two species stand out as a replacement for boxwood, namely Ilex crenata Dark Green and Ilex crenata Blondie.
The other crenata species look very similar at first glance, but there are important differences:
- Different leaves, in size, shape, colour, gloss, ... e.g. Convexa has a bulbous leaf, Green Hedge is rather yellow-green in color
- Different growth rate
- Very slow (takes a long time to obtain an adult hedge) : Stokes, Twiggy
- Normal speed like boxwood : Dark Green & Blondie
- High speed (more maintenance) : Maxima, Kanehirae
- Different branching
- Lots of branching (solid hedge shape) : Dark Green & Blondie
- Little branching (weak hedge shape): Convexa, Maxima, Caroline upright ...
- Different foliage
- Bald at the bottom when ageing : Convexa & Green Hedge
- Not bald at the bottom when ageing: Dark Green & Blondie
Ilex crenata Dark Green and Blondie tick a lot of boxes when compared to boxwood, and can be used as a substitute in many applications, given that the soil preferences of Ilex crenata - when necessary - are taken care of upon planting.
