During 2011 Dr. Anthony Fauci wrote an article for the Washington Post advocating for “Gain-of-Function” research in viruses. He said it was a risk worth taking. During 2013 NIH held a conference on “Gain-of-Function” research. Fauci’s comments begin about 15 minutes into the following video. About 30 minutes into the video Dr. Fauci talks about NIH funding Gain-of-Function research. Gain of function research is perfectly acceptable... as long as it's on a remote island, with a nuclear bomb kill safe at the center, in an underground facility, in bio-level 9000 partitions, with permanent living quarters in one of the inner rings, and final testing on one of the scientific team chosen by lot... May I please see a show of hands? You can take your cool chairs with you...

Have you ever had some friends or at least closer acquaintances who actually worked in scientific research? The people in the video doesn't sound at all like someone really involved (at least via their closer colleges) with anyhow dangerous variants of gain of function studies. The real problem is always the many faceted interests of those in power (leaders of all kinds, politicians, businessmen) who are rarely those really facing the consequences. Given the personalities favoured by these occupations I don't even know what type of consequences would really scare them. I tend to support gain-of-function research. I think the jury is still out on the decisive origins of the pandemic. Still, one possible origin is a lab not sufficiently prepared to deal with these pathogens likely had an accidental leakage occur out of well-intentioned research. There do seem to be benefits in appropriate settings that could control disease mutations rather than being ill-prepared for one evolving in the natural world. I don't think this pandemic should be the nail in the gain-of-function research coffin but a wake-up call for better practices. It's a learning curve, and risks come with that. Let's hope there's been tremendous growth in how we handle this research.
