Pyometra or Cystic Endometrial Hyperplasia is the most serious condition of a female dog's reproductive system. It happens to 26 percent of their population. Pyometra is typically a condition of the middle aged or older but can also happen in female dogs as early as 1 year of age.
The presence of a discharge is the basis for classification as either ‘open-cervix’ or ‘closed-cervix’ pyometra.
Pyometra can be managed medically with the use of hormones but the treatment of choice for this condition is still surgery or ovariohysterectomy.
