@stacey gewin and Madelyn Grace ... Very interesting that this punishment doesn't seem to deter people to do better - facts speak to the high number of re-admissions to the system, which no doubt contributes to a highly profitable industry to the benefit of a select few. The US is the only country that profits from it's prison system, incarceration has increased because it's profitable for people to be criminalised - did you miss the clear signposting in the introduction?! It also signalled that in the US the prison system as a deterrent doesn't work.... Perhaps you'd also like to also consider the possibility that the majority of women are not criminals but victims as clearly highlighted at 4.56... I find it utterly baffling that you overlook such outrageous statistics!? Are you closet misogynists?? Let me spell it out for you, the majority of women in prisons according to the statistics in the video should actually be in hospital or in safe houses / therapeutic and supportive environments to protect and assist them!! To even think to deny any rights or any goods given this context is abhorrent! Please be kind enough to share where you were schooled so I can be sure I don't send my daughter there...

Jungkooks Left nipple Pads and tampons are not privileges, they should be rights. Especially to women in prison. Period blood is a safety hazard, it’s ridden with germs that could definitely bring harm to woman SLEEPING in it. Stained sheets aren’t an issue, it’s the fact that these women have to make do with a situation that they cannot help. This isn’t about being ungrateful, it’s about giving imprisoned woman basic human rights. Of course prison isn’t supposed to be a comfortable experience, but providing pads and tampons to inmates at the very least will not impede rehabilitation, it’s purely a hygiene issue.

Jungkooks Left nipple Yes, they got themselves into their situations, whether it be from an unfortunate lack of judgement or because they simply didn’t think to consider consequences. Jenny Cork than don’t commit a crime and you wont have to use nothing. It’s that simple. All of these women knew before breaking the law that prisons don’t give tampons so if that’s your main concern than don’t break the law. And also. The reason these prisons don’t give the inmates all these luxuries is because it’s fucking PRISON. If they gave inmates every demand they wanted than what punishment is that? People would just keep breaking the law because they aren’t scared to go to jail because they know they’ll have it easy while they’re in there. Then get out and do it again and the cycle would never stop. Prison is not supposed to be a fun experience. It’s supposed to give you the consequence of your actions. It’s supposed to give you discipline because you committed a crime. Just like your parents would discipline you as a child, if that child grows up and is an adult who commits a crime than who is supposed to discipline them? That’s where the prison system comes in. If you can’t act like a contributing citizen to your society than someone else will come in to make sure you get a consequence to learn your lesson. Now wether you learn that lesson or not is up to each individual in the prison. You choose wether you want to be a changed person or not. But after you break into someone’s home and steal their shit for drug money I don’t think that person deserves to get eyelash extensions. Hell thats a luxury on the outside that most women who never commit crimes don’t get! The more luxuries the more the inmates demand for even more luxuries and then prison becomes something not fear. Which in turn would lead to more people committing crimes because they know it will be easy in prison. Now I don’t agree with the guards taking advantage of the inmates but trust me..you want our government to keep the prison systems..

When I was locked up, the only makeup we had on commisssry was mascara. So we improvised. We would get red M&M's and vaseline to make lipgloss and ground coffee would make a bronzer. Mascara was used for liquid eyeliner as well. Makeup is a big deal for us girls. It helped me feel feminine and confident, which is very easy to lose when you're locked up. It was my 1st and only time in jail, which I received a year probation for a non violent misdemeanor. I did 2 months for a violation of probation. We live and we learn. I am not proud that I landed myself in that situation, but no regrets, because in those 2 months I was able to learn a lot about myself and a lot about how the system works. (At least in the US) I now want to go to college to be a social worker.

we need to remember some people were born into the world with no support, people treating them like they are worthless and disposable, abused, and little hope that they can succeed or they are lovable. They might end up on a destructive path that puts them in jail, so the best thing to do is give them purpose and instill a better sense of self. That is why programs like this should exist.

Yeah, I know some people would say that is sexist but let's be real, the majority of abuse is coming from male guards according to most female prisoners. And having to be naked in front of the male guards all the time, can be traumatic for a lot of these women that have probably had sexual abuses (mostly by men) in the past, and what kind of man seeks out becoming a guard in a women's prison in the first place? It doesn't seem like there is any oversight into what the guards are doing, it's like a playground for the ones that go there just for the purpose of finding easy victims.

You need some men though. Men are just stronger. You need men to be able to be there when the women riot and try to shank you. Women can be just as vicious/malicious. Don't discount their sex for anything. So the only thing men will have is their strength/size so some men would be a necessity.

what about in male prisons though? why do female prisons need male guards when in male prisons it would be the same thing, male prisoners/male guards, they'd be equal in strength, if strength is the issue. If you think gaining employment should be based on gender, then no. Maybe we can only have female gynecologists or male proctologists cause wHo KnOwS, why would someone choose a career revolving specifically around the other sex unless they have predatory intentions right? Maybe we should stop hiring white people to patrol borders, or sending white cops to patrol black neighborhoods, cause why expect someone to be able to competently do their job if there is a preconceived notion of bias? I wouldn't say bad idea so much as flat out dumb, nice double standard there. Fact is, people exist in their minds and are shaped around their culture growing up, not their gender or ethnicity. #1 rule of egalitarianism: Women are just as bad as men, and men are just as bad as women. Being male or female doesn't predispose you to being a trash person one way or another. The fact this even crossed your mind is a good sign you need to expand yourself a bit broader.

The system IS the problem. Some of us women have been through sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional neglect. To put it short, some people don't grow up with the white picket fence, education, good parents, etc. So it becomes a cycle that some children don't have the best start, and then we end up in prison. And then the system becomes our parent, and we are at it's mercy. And we all k now, that this system is not perfect and there are bad people out there in a position of power, that abuse their position on a population that has been living an abused life. BUT, i believe that this creates the most beautiful people walking this earth, because such a hard life, creates a closer relationship with God and the understanding that is called empathy.

Before I finally got myself into a treatment program and really took it seriously, I'm ashamed to admit that I spent 5 days in jail on a misdemeanor shoplifting charge....5 days isn't much but it really opened my eyes to some of the horrible things going on in there. It was traumatic but in a way, I'm glad it happened because it was one of the things that made me realize I didn't want that life and propelled me into my recovery. There was 2 different male guards that were trading sexual favors for basic necessities and contraband as well. An older woman who was an alcoholic collapsed quit breathing....the guards called the ambulance but just stood there and did not bother starting cpr. Luckily for that poor woman, one of the kitchen workers was just getting back from her shift as it was happening and she had some medical training so she proceeded to do cpr on this woman and gave her mouth to mouth until the ambulance finally showed up. She made it, thank god, but those guards never lifted a finger to help save her. They just stood there and were even conversating like a women dying in front of you is just an every day occurrence. It was a seizure of course and they knew she was coming in an alcoholic and should've been in the medical dorm but they didn't. It's a coed facility and the men have it pretty bad too. They gave an elderly man a top bunk which is against protocol since he have a seizure disorder and had trouble with mobility. He ended up falling off it and broke his hip but it took the inmates over an hour to get the guards attention and when they did, they came in and glanced at him still laying on the floor and decided he was faking it and walked right back out. That old man laid there for 8 fucking hours....it took the inmates getting so upset that they were about to riot to get them to do anything. His fellow inmates had been begging for them to help him for 8 hours yall. When they finally decided to do their job, they discovered his hip was severely broken and would require immediate surgery. 8 fucking hours laying on a hard concrete floor with a broken hip....it makes me wanna cry every time I think about it. His mobility was already not great but after that, he had to have a wheelchair. They treat those people like animals. Or like they're disposable. The last night I was there, a mentally ill women in my dorm started having a very loud psychotic fit and instead of taking her out of the dorm and attending to her, they told her that she better cut it out before one of the other inmates whooped her ass for waking everyone up. They told her they'd do nothing to stop it either. It was an extremely disturbing experience to say the least.

To avoid recidivism, prisoners need rehabilitation (usually mental health assistance) and a way to see a different future. The point in this program is to lower recidivism by giving them a SKILL. Elle Elle well quit or step down from the position become a teacher or something, not take it out on people. You just helped me make my point SWEETIE. Find another job that doesn’t consist of as much trauma nobody holds a gun to your head and makes you become or continue being a police officer. Sweetie

Elaine BB is correct. Too many CEOs and business officials have their hands secretly in the honey pot making money off of other peoples misfortunes, mistakes, and bad judgement calls. Americas prison system is a joke. Most prisons do nothing but breed smarter criminals with more connections. Although I really do love how these two prisons started those programs for women. Fantastic idea and a much better way of teaching the inmates things that can actually help them on the outside and at the same time give them self confidence and trade skill knowledge.

Can the public donate to this program? I'd love to donate to programs like these to ensure these women have the tools necessary to complete this course with everything they need! From cosmetics, brushes, hair tools, etc. Right down to the little things! Like enough bobby pins, hair ties, rat tail combs, towels and capes! Can anyone let me know if donating to this is even possible? Thank you!

I have a burning desire to see those abusive guards put in the very cells they lurk over and yes LURK not guard, LurK there need to be ways to combat abuse and there needs to be incentivized plans for guards to help monitor each other and report coworkers who decide to become the problem

It's not a matter of them being deserving of beauty products, but rather of them being able to have a sense of dignity. Prisons are meant to punish and rehabilitate by restricting one's freedom, not by making them feel less human. As a woman in modern society, you're value as a person is viewed as being heavily dependent on your physical appearance. Therefore, denying these women access to products which make them feel more feminine or more like themselves would be an inhumane thing to do.

This should have been a 2 part video because it just kind of feels like the part about abuse and corruption in women’s prison was thrown on last minute. Also why put emphasis on the fact that it’s predominantly WoC affected but not interview any.

Great video, I completely agree that prison should be a form of rehabilitation. Not punishment in sexual, emotional, or physical abuse. Not punishment is denying inmates basic living products. I know that prisons don't do this because they want inmates to come back, they want the money. I wish there was more programs in prisons for rehabilitation, whether it's learning a skill or substance abuse rehab.

Thank you so much for making this video. I always talk to people about how prisoners rights are important, and I always get the response that "oh.. but they're inside prison and it's their fault that they're in that situation. So they deserve it." This response ticks me off every single time because I don't think people realize that often times, people end up incarcerated because they were failed by the system in the first place. You have people who have mental health issues, who suffer from addiction, who have been victims of violence and/or failed foster care since they were young, etc.; and this creates a ripple effect of people who are not able to thrive in society because of lack of support. Are there people who are inside prison just because of stupid mistakes? Yes. But does that mean that we should deprive people of their rights, and access to basic necessities? Absolutely not.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I am a licensed cosmetologist and it is a very satisfying career for a lot of people. Give them a skill and I think they will have a goal and new direction when they get out. It was the same for male inmates training health service dogs. It works.

Thank you for this video. A reminder that keeping a person in prison for a year cost between 30K + 60K. This money would be so much better spent on Rehabilitation of drug offenders and mental health services. Legalization of drugs and removing money from the equation would solve many of our judicial Systems many problems. The way that human beings are treated in prison is disgraceful. Drug addicted, survivors of abuse and mentally ill offenders are in a place they don't belong that just encourages recidivism. Remember at this time of year to think of those who are less fortunate than yourself that are in prison or homeless. Imagine how easy it is for many people who live on the edges of society to lose one piece of their survival puzzle and end up homeless jobless and on their way to prison. Being low income homeless and being an addict ARE NOT CRIMES. Solving our countries gigantic judicial system mess will take a miracle, let's hope for it.

I really can't understand why we allow men to work as guards/officers in a women's prison.
@themightydash1714
5 жыл бұрын
The same reason women work in mens prisons, and everywhere, we are a civilisation where men and women are equal, so men and women have the right to work in the same places. Having only women working in female prisons is sexist. It's discrimination, It's not right. The fact is ANY prison guard not doint their job correctly should be fired and investigated. Their sex have NOTHING to do with their effectivness in the job.
