Cain had a mental breakdown after she learned how badly the colonies were wiped out. She never had a chance or time to recover from it. Everything she did since was a self-protection mindset. She may have been a good captain, but she was not ready for such a massive events ahead of her. She needed more and better training that she got. Adama himself said that she was very ambitious and well connected. Those were to 2 biggest flaws.

Cain was solely focused on the tactical picture, but had no grasp of the larger strategic picture - due to her hatred. She could not afford to lose 1 pilot, yet she was attacking like she had an infinite list of resources. The war was lost, returning back to the irradiated colonies was a non-starter, but she wanted victory against a superior enemy. It's like sitting at a casino table for a month. Maybe you catch a streak and beat them for awhile, but you lose in the end. In order to replace losses, train pilots and build up a fleet, they had to retire, find another world to land on and make babies to increase the population size.

Your honour, I present to you, exhibit #1; The First 'Earth'. Remember Adama picking up a handful of dirt, that was still irradiated? That holocaust happened before the events of the 12 colonies, complete with their very own set of old school Cylons. The planet had some time to clear. Nobody, save for D'Anna, who lost all hope, stayed there. Stands to reason that the 12 colonies would at least as messed up, no? If it was livable, like New Caprica, which was harsh - they would have stayed, no? Nothing would have grown and supported life...

She was an fine Commander who was fast-tracked to high rank without the emotional and mental seasoning that comes with time and experience. Her war-demons were no less and no greater than adama's, but she had decades-less coping-skills to bring to the table. She should have been brought to heel (and instantly) by roslin. Remember roslin pinning her own right to lead, and adama's authority to command? 'are you planning to stage a coup?' Cain was no longer 'on detached duty' and autonomous, but allowed to continue as though she were.

In the end it wouldn't have mattered. Adama would have still been in Cain's bullseye except as a barrier to her being in charge instead of an insubordinate officer. A little thing like civilian oversight of the military isn't a factor in the thinking of people like Cain.

Zigblat Finally, someone in the comments section gets it. Following Roslin's succession to President, she would've had to create a new cabinet. On the cabinet would've been the ranking officer of all the armed forces. In the US, that person is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. ALL captains and crews of the civilian ships would've been drafted and pressed into military service. Of that pool, she would've selected her CJCS. Adama most likely would've been appointed as CJCS and Tigh would've been made Admiral of the Fleet. Even if Adama refused the position, I'm sure Roslin would've accepted whoever he recommended. The point is, by the time the Pegasus showed up, Cain would've already been outranked.

I agree that he would have obsessed more and more about destroying the Cylons, he always had a tendency towards that, but he would have never shot his men especially his XO for making reasonable suggestions. Cain seemed very unstable to me, much more than Adama ever was even at his lowest point and he always saw his crew as family even before the destruction of the colony. He ALWAYS valued Human life. Cain never seemed to have that kind of humanity, she was cold, cruel, paranoid in a way. She only kept those around who would not speak up, all that made her efficient in a way but without superiors to keep her tendencies under control she turned into a dictator that remorselessly takes out anyone who stands in her way. Civillians and Military alike. Of course her way of doing things led to the worst of her crew to be completly loyal since she allowed them to live out their dark desires and call it their duty but i am very shure that most normal officers were terrified of getting any attention from her and therefore tried to not stick out. Thats not how you bring out excellency in your men. Adama would have gone off and fought without Roslin and would have lost his sense for reason to a degree. But not in the same way as Cain and he would not have harmed the civillian fleet. But with the Galactica he would have died alongside his men.

Well there was that time he put Callie up against the wall and threatened to shoot her if the Chief didn't get the fuel flowing. As he said, he would shoot 10 Callies if that's what it took to keep his planes flying. I never knew for sure if he was actually bluffing. But Galen believed him. Although I had no problem with shooting Callie. Those dead eyes. The shriek of her voice. The best of limited options. I was always fond of Torrie for shooting her out the launch tube.
@Thatslifebro_

I think he was bluffing back then, the President had an appointment free for Tyrol immediatly after the "adventure" in the brig. She just used the same tactic she used a couple of times in the Show, give the other party a clear incentive to have a civilized conversation about the topic instead of sabotaging or muteneering. She did it back on Caprica with the protesting Teachers and back when the Cylon sympathizers sabotaged the military ammo. She knew he would give in because he just wanted to negotiate. On the matter of Callie. Well i dislike Torrie more she was slimy, illoyal at times and did not really give a fuck about right or wrong. In the Adamas words: "She´s no Billie." Callie was a good person. She was a loving mother and wanted to support Tyrol in everything. Yes she is no Boomer but i think she was what the Chief needed at that time especially considering there was a Sharon on the ship that was with Helo and had a child with him. She clearly did not deserve to die but Torrie that slimy bitch axed her off without remorse, and i say that without really liking Callie.
