I shoot both, but I prefer my SLR because I can focus just as quickly as with my rangefinder and I like seeing EXACTLY what’s going to be in the frame. Being able to see outside of the lines is a distraction for me.

All good points! Here is one more from me. For portraits a short telephoto is often a good choice, and, as stated in the video, longer focal lengths usually work best on a SLR. As is well known, this type of lens tends to give more flattering results, with only the subject in focus, plus shy subjects feel more comfortable because the photographer can stand further away.

Not just the sound difference for the mirror removal, but the shake. It's easier to hand steady a rangefinder at lower shutter speeds.

Very true. I had a class assignment once where we had to bracket handheld exposures of one low-light scene. Most of the students started getting motion blur around 1/30 but I used my leica and it was sharp even at 1 second (I also held my breath and braced my arms against my body to achieve this)

Some SLR's can do depth of field preview. However street shooters rarely use dof as an effect and instead just keep everything sharp.

We use the DOF scale on the lens to do zone focusing ("guessomatic"). That was how we took overhead shoots using a motor drive and WA lens. Guessing the proper distance is one of the things we learned in the past, for zone focusing and manual flash. Reading a scene was more than composition and EV, back then.
@AlexRamosDrTaz

@@bfs5113 Exactly. Sometimes I leave my lens at a hyperfocal length and aperture at f8-f11 for daytime street shots, especially with the SLR as that makes it easier to quickly compose and shoot.

Shutter on Kodak Retina is silent, its like the sound of rustling a tissue. Leaf shutters are amazing quiet. If I want to get noticed take the Bronica ETRS out - that's like loudly clapping during mass.

The reason I use my Voigtlander Vitoret DR rangefinder is mainly because the leaf shutter is more reserved than the mirror slap I get on my SLRs.The Rangefinder helps in street photography.A lot

since SLRs are not just "cropping" the view finder they can show how things look depending what the focal length is. wide lenses will show things that are afar look smaller. might be handy if you want to take a picture of your friend as if he is holding the top of the eiffel tower. LOL

I have used both for street photography. I find that body language makes the biggest difference when it comes to not being noticed. But if you’re shooting close under 3m, I find that with a rangefinder I can take multiple shots where as with a SLR as soon as I take the first picture people look to see what make the noise. I agree that I like an SLR for anything that is longer than 50mm. But the 85mm Zeiss works pretty well on the Leica M3.
@therealsirrobin

Yeah, the M3 is ok with a 85 but it will be still a bit better on an SLR. 👍

I use rangefinders and SLRs for street photography. The Leica M6 with Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 is my favorite rangefinder for street. The Nikon F2 with Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 is my favorite SLR for street. If there is a likelihood that my camera may get lost, damaged, or stolen while street shooting, I use less expensive cameras such as: Canon Canonet rangefinder with 40mm f/1.7 lens. Nikon EM SLR with 50mm f/1.8 lens.
@ARMAJOV

I used to shoot rangefinder only but after “restarting” film photography I now like SLRs better. The reason is quite simply, and this doesn’t apply to you obviously, I wear glasses and there is no way I can see 35mm or even 28mm frame lines in a Leica viewfinder. 50mm is fine, in a M4! The Nikon F unmetered with eye level prism or the F3 HP are perfect for me and the sports (F) or action (F3) finders for these cameras are outworldly fantastic! Still I happily use my Leicas though, but either with a 50mm or an external viewfinder for my 35mm or 21-35mm anyway. Using zone focusing this is probably anyway the best, fastest and most convenient method to shoot wide angle lenses. You could use this method with an SLR as well by the way (and mirror lock up too), just saying ...

I like shooting rangefinders (mostly Nikon S series), but feel rangefinders' ability to be able to see outside the frames is a bit exaggerated. Great photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau and Robert Capa took many of their masterpieces with old Leicas and Contaxes with primitive peep-hole viewfinders that had no framelines. Otherwise, very nice video!

A very interesting and informative video. For a while, Ive wondered why rangefinder cameras were so popular for street photography. My assumption was because of the lack of a mirror, making the picture taking quieter. Very good point about the SLR viewfinder appearing blurry when the lens is prefocused at certain distances. I'm keen to do some street photography again but alas I don't own a 35mm rangefinder. So I'll have to use my old, manual SLR with 35mm film. I would be photographing blind as I'll be shooting from the hip. I will use mirror lock up to get rid of the mirror slap noise. And there'll be no blurry viewfinder to worry about.

I think a simple answer to your question is "Whatever you have that can record an image". Digital or film; SLR, rangefinder, camera with LCD only, film camera with no viewfinder or rangefinder (e.g. Bessa L (Cosina 107-SW) or MDa), iphone or android or whatever else you can think of. It is the result that counts and not your camera or brand. Leica does not shoot better photos especially a film Leica. Given the same lens, film and photographer, a M6 or a much cheaper Konica Hexsar RF or a Bessa R2 produces the same level of image quality. I have a M6 and a Konica, not because one is better than the other, I just like to play with both of them. That is all. By the way, you can still see with your left eye with your right eye on the viewfinder of a SLR.
