Had a breville cafe Roma espresso machine for around 20 years, I cut the bottoms out of its dual wall baskets and bought a nemox lux grinder for about twice the price of the coffee machine and made reasonable espresso. Fast forward to 2024 and the Roma blew a gasket so I’ve upgraded to a breville dual boiler and am about to convert the nemox to stepless grinder with a cheap mod.

My wife bought me the Breville barista touch 2 years ago and it took me about 6-8 months to truly figure it out. I still don’t understand how how to get a perfect Espresso every time or how to taste flavor notes thru cupping, chemex/ filter coffee or espresso but I’m learning a lot from watching videos. I need a better grinder, I think my conical burr built into the Breville touch is awful! I want a flat burr grinder would you agree w this? Your videos are amazing and I love the content! Your tasting notes video brought me back to reality bc I was starting to think coffee notes were all bullshit! I mean how can you taste a sweet tart, bubble gum, green apple, blackberries, cherry candy etc 🤦♂️ Here I am thinking I have no palette for coffee tasting 🤣

It's controversial, but I would say that 99% of professional baristas make up flavour notes and can't actually tell you a coffee flavour outside of 'its tasty' or 'its muddy'. If they didn't have the flavour notes on the bag in front of them while they were drinking it, they would each say a completely different flavour. I don't know why it is that the 5% of black coffee drinkers feel the need to pretend to know more about coffee than they do. It's a real bugbear of mine. The simple reality is that NO ONE fully understands coffee and what makes it taste a certain way yet. We're all still scratching the surface. 🤔 Maybe I should do a video on this so people like yourself can relax and feel good about themselves and their coffee. That's the whole point and that why I say "ENJOY your brew!" 🤗👌 In answer to your question about the grinder, conicals are just as good as flat burrs but you can go larger with a flat burr so it's faster and less contact time with the blades so maybe a slightly cleaner taste but it's so minimal. I would suggest a Timemore 78s or a DF64v2 or if you don't want to single dose, the Eureka Mignon range is the biggest, so you'll find a perfect grinder for yourself there. 🙌 Thanks for the comment!

@@Rydecoffeecoach I really appreciate you responding back to me so quickly! I feel like I’m always chasing a new speciality coffee to see if I can find the best coffees out there where I can taste the notes on the bag. Like I said I’ve tried every way & always thought I wasn’t good enough yet bc I really can’t taste flavors at all. I can def taste chocolates or muddy dark roasts as well a lavender or florals but that’s about it 🤷♂️ I always watch Hoffman & Lance Hedrick bc they seem like the best out there w tasting every possible note of every coffee! After watching you explain everything so eloquently and to the point I’m starting to realize it’s all bullshit! I do love coffee & love trying to roasters but now I know it’s a myth w the flavor notes on the bag. I’m def thinking of getting the Timemore 78s I think that’s the one that does both espresso & filter coffees or the DF64. Thanks again for your feedback and honestly if you grabbed 5-10 Bags of random Specialty coffee and made a video trying to taste the flavor notes that would be amazing to watch! Thanks for being so authentic about coffee 🫡

I've went thru a few all-in-ones, but really find that using the DeLonghi ECP3420 and The Breville Smart to be a perfect combination. It easier to clean, and far better coffee. Wonderful gift from my wife. Always was worried how complicated it was to do espresso on a maul machine. But I've only ever thrown away one cup. Routinely do americano and latte at home. (3-5 a day). Your advice is perfect!

DF54, DF64 Gen 2, Varia vs3 are better value for taste and workflow than these grinders listed here IMO. Breville SGP seems like a 2021 recommendation. I say this as an Aus buyer. Edit: some are a little over $500 (depending on location) but it’s worth the extra $50 or so.

i'm looking into the df64 v2. is it worth upgrading the burs from the options they give you, or are the factory stainless steel burs good enough?
@Rydecoffeecoach

The Df54 and the vs3 aren't that great in my opinion both pretty inconsistent and for the price I don't think it's worth it. The 64v2 is awesome but that's a lot more expensive and is not under $500 so it will appear in another video later. But also, the Timemore 78s is a much nicer grinder. The other thing your not realising is that most people who want a cheap grinder don't often want a single dose. In fact my customers actively rebel against weighing and single dosing. I doubt many people drinking lattes or caps are going to want to single dose, why would they when you can't taste the difference? I appreciate the comment but you're on the wrong video if you're recommending these grinders.

@@Rydecoffeecoach fair response. I agree re the 078s and df64 gen 2. I own both. The latter, with DLC burrs, was $550 aud for sale on alternative brewing last week. Or you can buy direct from df64 (which I did). I feel like the SGP definitely requires WDT, which may kill the workflow for those already wanting a hopper. I appreciate your perspective, and videos in general. I understand it’s difficult to communicate value for the hopper lovers. To that, I’d say get a secondhand mazzer mini for $200-$300 Aud! I see them for sale so often and they’re tanks!

@@Desert6G Both burrs are quite good. I’ve tried both but I think for $50 or so, the DLC is worth it. It can do better filter than the stock. It’s a great value all-rounder 64mm.

@@Trenckyherbs honestly, KZitem itself is hard! 🤣 Its impossible for me to make broad content for all different audiences because it doesn't go far, and when I make niche content I get hammered by different audiences. I should move to board games 😅

@Rydecoffeecoach What would be the best single dose budget grinder be? Would you buy the SK40 or just stick to the Sage SGP that I got free with the Sage Dual Boiler? I would love to sell the SGP for the Eureka Mignon...

Turin make great products. 👌 I love the DF64 gen 2 and the Sk40 is also great. Timemore 78s is also amazing. Eureka Oro single dose is amazing too. However, with puck prep, Wdt and puck screens you'll be fine with the SGP. 🙌

Thanks for the info. I’ve found the Eureka Specialta on a deal so looking into that but it’s a lot more than the SGP. I wonder whether it’s worth the extra $200 outlay for that sweetie flavour. Sorry for the indecisive confusion

I'm looking to upgrade from my Rancilio rocky grinder. It's a great grinder but I realized I need a single dose grinder. I'm retired Was watching grinder videos . I have a Gaggia classic plus I'm a strong believer in keep it simple stupid. I love both of these machines but I weigh now and single dose I'm hooked. I have 800 dollars I'm in America. What your recommendations.

Have a look at the Timore 78s. It's my current favourite overall. Beautiful and very consistent (after you season the burrs). kzitem.info/news/bejne/mpCIzoKfap6biXosi=XX8pzdmJEcdfJN5S
