Wow. As a non-american, I never quite understood why Americans have so much respect for Washington. After watching this, ut makes sense why. He led by example, and set the precedent. He was obviously thinking of the long-term future of the nation, not just about his power.

I don't believe Washington could have abolished slavery, it would have immediately started a huge rift in the country that would have tore it apart in its infancy. The unanimous consensus for all of the first 16 presidents, including Lincoln and anti-slavery guys like the two Adams, was to prioritize unity in the country by finding compromise on the slavery issue
@fishjj76
4 ай бұрын
All true. But he did sign the first version of the Fugitive Slave Act. Don't make the mistake of thinking Washington had a problem with slavery.
@HanHonHon
4 ай бұрын
@@fishjj76 I'm not trying to be a Washington fanboy or anything, but the FSA was only passed as legal means to enforce the Fugitive Slave clause directly written in the constitution, and it passed the House at a veto-proof majority. Think of it like the Volstead Act for the 18th Amendment (prohibition). Therefore it would have passed no matter who was in office at that point in time, even with someone like John Adams Now Washington's legacy in regards to slavery is still odious, and I don't think he should be let off the hook for freeing his slaves after his/his wife Martha's deaths. But at the same time, I think it's ridiculous to assume he could have abolished slavery with his authority. And his personal ownership of slaves has pretty much nothing to do with the political decisions he made in office

When I was a kid I used to question whether George Washington actually existed because I didn't know about anything he actually did as president. It's weird how little of the first president's presidency is common knowledge. Compare that to any other famous president who are known for very specific things that happened while they were president (Lincoln is known for the Civil War, FDR is known for the Great Depression and WWII, Jefferson is known for the Louisiana Purchase, etc.)

It would be very difficult for Washington to abolish slavery during his 1st term. He would have faced heavy opposition to it, it would divided the country and the British would have returned. There was a window of opportunity for that during his second term when the French abolished slavery in Haiti and other colonies in 1794 (Napoleon tried to re-establish it in 1801, that's what caused the Haitian Revolution). Washington could've followed what the French did in 1794, but I'm sure he would've still face oppositions from the plantation owners. And the debt that the U.S have could've been an obstacle for him not to do it

It'd be cool having Washington back in the Presidency. However, I'd be initially be concerned about six things, but I think he'd be able to adapt: 1. A Washington clone should have to worry about, everything he does will set a precedent. 2. He will need to be able to adapt to modern technology. This can range from a cell phone to a teleprompter to nuclear weapons. 3. He will need to be able to deal with a 24/7 news cycle; tabloids... 4. He will have to adjust his thinking when it comes to the Electorate. The Electorate of 1789, was primarily Rich White Men. Now, there's a multiple races, religions, sexes, etc... 5. He will likely need to take a more partisan stance, despite being "above party" when he governed. Eisenhower probably could have been elected as a Democrat or as a Republican. But he chose the Republican Party. 6. He will do with more intensive critism.

Most notable, thanks, Washington did. The first president Revolutionary hero Father of the country. Father of the continental army. Held the new country together. Rescued his unit during the 7 years war. Became one of the wealthiest men in the country. He became commander and chief. He led his men through the revolutionary war. Got his men out of Brandywine and valleyford. Always reminded the young nation what they were fighting for. He never wanted to be a politician. Everybody in the country just forced him to be President. He's the only President to receive 100% of the electoral vote. He's the founder of the state. He is known as great. He set precedent for everybody. He didn't belong to a political party. He hoped that no one would. Kept us out of foreign influence. He always always dissenters And gave every voice a chance. Establish how the President was supposed to read the Constitution. He helped design j's treaty. Stop the whiskey rebellion. Kept us out of permanent alliances with the foreign world. Has a capital named after him. Has a state named after him. Never wanted the power, but used it to benefit the nation. His mom died A few months after he became President. Only President not to live in the White House. Originally did not want a salary but changed his mind when he realized that only rich people could become President. A rule that he did not want. Originally only wanted to serve one term and was not happy when they made him serve a second term. Organize the Executive Branch of the new government Help set up the departments of the cabinet. Was a truly great judge of Character and appointed Thomas Jefferson Alexander Hamilton, Henry Knox, and Edmond Randolph Extremely nonpartisan Warned Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson about their political parties and rejected joining them. Help set up the national bank. Helped set up tariffs to increase American revenue. Prevented slavery, expanding to the Northwest Indian territory. Enforce solvernty Overland in the Northwest Indian territory (which sucked) No evidence that Washington ever called for the outright constification of American Indian land. Help draft the proclamation of neutrality. Had a great second term. Acknowledge that it would be best if he ran for a second term despite his own personal wishes. Set his physique aside for the greater good for the country. Made sure the new country didn't fall apart. Only person to receive one hundred percent of the electoral votes TWICE Help j treaty to get through Congress. An avoided war and allowed for peaceful trade with Britain. Personally led the troops during the wisky rebellion to make sure nothing exclated and it could be resolved peacefully. Allow the rebels to go home after the rebellion. Stood strong after Barbary pirates for harassing American ships in the Mediterranean. Help establish American ships and trade. Convince Congress to establish a standing Navy. Send the navy to protect ships against the pirates. Showed how a President is to end his terms in office. Chose not to run for re. Election. Gave his influential farewell address. Which called for national unity of winning joining political parties, continue neutrality when it came to foreign wars, a balanced federal budget, easy credit free Trade and the protection of checks and balances and the separations of powers in government. So much of What the presidency is because of Washington When he came into office, he had very little guidance on what the presidency is even supposed to be And creates it from nothing. Was not a good general, but was a phenomenal leader. He started out as a c***** general, but by the end of it He finally came around to what the role was. He was very good at putting the right people around him. Recognizing talent and putting it in a place where we can succeed. Like picking Nathaniel green to go down and lead in the South. He recognized Alexander Hamilton before anybody else did. Even having people with different agendas Like putting Hamilton and Jefferson on the same cabinet. People who were complete differences and how they saw the country. Great leader and kept neutrality. Wasn't afraid to get out there and mix things Up a little bit and dealing with the rebellions that were happening in his own country. It was extremely challenging to stay neutral during the French revolution. Given everything France has done for us. And the extreme pressure he was under by his own Secretary of State. Almost everybody had respect for Washington. One of the greatest things he did was walking away. He had to do that for the sake of the country. Otherwise, they were ready to make him a king. His farewell addresses true masterpiece. And for a 100 years it guided Americans. One of our most non-partisan presidents. Though yes, he leaned federalists throughout his 8 years as President, he always listened to the democratic republicans. He had a great neutral foreign policy. He manoeuvered well between The people in the United States screaming France or Britain he managed Not to pick aside. Although I mentioned the j treaty, I did not mention that by the time he was handling j treaty, he was also single handedily handling with the whiskey rebellion. Made sure the troops did not fire on the rebels. As that is not what he wanted, the Army to be used for. Went door-to-door and talked to people during the rebellion using just basic diplomacy. Spoke to Congress about the whiskey tax and got a better deal and the uprising ended. Make sure that the presidency was not too powerful. And finally, after all his years of service, he got to retire and died in peace. Establish how the government was supposed to be run. Maneuvered well during the birth of the political parties. Made it clear what the role of the President was. Show how the President was supposed to read the Constitution. Showed how the President was to be commander-in-chief and in charge of all the armed forces. Showed how the President was in charge of the Executive Branch. Showed how the President could not pass new laws. Showed how the President could influence Congress into the passing new laws. Showed how the President is to Veto and created the Veto system that we still have today. Showed how the President head of state had the responsibility of being the lead spokesman for the nation. He quit He made it clear that he didn't want to be a king and he voluntarily resigned. Or retired At the end of this second term and thus set a standard for all future Presidents to follow. If I left anything out please, please let me know. I would love to hear your criticism. And I would love for you to add to what I written. Thank you.

Basic difference between the American Revolution and the French Revolution is their core values. America: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit (NOT guarantee) of Happiness, France: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. In order to achieve equality (i.e. MAKING people equal by force of government) the French were easily able to justify mass murder of their countrymen, and murdered most of the aristocracy.
