If you play a 3+3, you're already half way there. It's not a giant leap to then go to what's effectively 0+6. 10 minutes in, you get used to it.

They might feel weird, but ergonomically they are easier to handle. Plus there is benefit to having the thing string being longer past the nut than the thin string. Break angle is different for one and actually benefits tuning stability.

As a Chapman artist, I have to thank you for your honesty Dave. I always thought Chapman were a bit too on point and as such just have no character. Being a Chapman artist and still critiquing their stuff is great to hear. But I can't say I'd buy a Chapman! I'll stick with Fender and PRS. P.S - As a fellow Frusciante nut, I live your playing and you inspired me to pick a guitar up years after I put one down. You're an amazing player and you've certainly inspired me to not only play again but to keep on trying to improve my tone. Thank you for the work you put into sharing all this amazing music with us.

I've always admired how precise you are about how you want the guitar to sound and what you want it to 'be'. What you've done there looks really good. I do wonder what would happen if you got your hands on one of those genuine '59 Les Pauls. Now you would obviously respect the pedigree but, as you've said a few times, you favour the Stratocaster, and I can't help but imagine you tinkering with the old Gibson. What a temptation it would be. But it is there to be played and your embellishments are greatly focused.

Dave, I think it's awesome that you have made this guitar your own. I think far too often that we get stuck by not making an instrument our own. Far too often we get retrained by what's considered acceptable. I have a Gibson es 175t that is extremely modified with the addition of a 7th string and an onboard guitar GK pickup and active pickups. I play hard to rock and metal with a blues feel in the lead department Why a jazz guitar? I don't know, but it feels right! I've been playing this guitar for over 20 years now! Did I hurt the value? Yes. However, it's my guitar! I think people forget that guitars are bits of wood. They are instruments. An extension of ourselves. Congratulations to you! Again, thanks for being down to earth!

The way we go about modding our favorite guitars is seriously obsessive. There always seems to be something else we want from even the best factory guitars for awhile after initial purchase. Sometimes it takes years to dial them in perfectly to our liking. But when you finally get everything just right, it's a very satisfying experience. The beauty of it for me, is the realization that you don't need to spend thousands on a guitar to create something extraordinary. A vision of what you want, and the passion and patience to achieve it are invaluable.

Hi Dave. Thanks for sharing. I agree with your changes. I also think the tone and volume are too far apart. Tone would have been have been better placed under the volume. If I had have done this job I would have also hidden the old switch rout and screw holes with a matching piece of maple and finished the top in the colour you now have but in Nitrocellulose lacquer. Good job that you done yourself though. Isn't it just heaven when you come across a guitar that becomes part of you !.

That looks so good stripped down and the knobs look like they were meant to be. Never would have thought about switch placement being so important but I always play with my trem bar in so that could be an issue but I'm nowhere near as active on the controls as you are. Definitely right about having a think what works best for you. I bought a 1980s Japanese Strat about 6 months ago and whilst it played and felt great, the bridge single coil really didn't get me inspired. I decided to try a Dimarzio Tone Zone S hot rail style pickup in the bridge and that addition alone turned a nice vintage Strat into my number 1 which I never thought would happen. Great vid as always Dave.

My dad is a big mick ronson fan and had sanded one of his guitars down to bare wood. Then he and my wee bro did the same to a squier strat he has. Anytime i played it i loved the feel of the wood cos they had used beeswax on it. So I did it on a les paul copy. Still have it, just needs some work done then i will maybe post a video about it. I heard you are meant to redo the beeswax every year or so lol

Very cool. You should have a Signature guitar. Funny, though-I don’t quite understand how you “loved” the stock guitar yet found so many aspects of it you couldn’t stand and had to change. So, what parts Rod you like? Just the neck? Also, what makes it “great live” but not good in other contexts? Lastly, it boggles my mind that such a prolific ‘Strat guy’ could have no use of/fondness for positions 2 and 4. 4 is the raison d’être for Strats versus all other guitars!

Thanks for revealing the gorgeous burl on the top. If you ever sand another guitar down and don’t want to paint or lacquer it you can get Minwax and rub it in for a hand rubbed finish that feels fabulous and seals the surface nicely. Ask a cabinetmaker or check in a large hardware store. Some of the wax is neutral and some has a tint to give a kind of stained color to the wood. It all depends on what you want. Really nice job in that one. 👍🌞☮️🎸💖
