Very informative video, but I do have a question. What was illuminating Pluto when we saw the dark side of the planet when you were showing us the layers, and for that matter the side when we saw the surface detail? I was always told(maybe wrongly so) that Pluto is so far out that our sun would appear as small as any other star we see in our night's sky so I thought that it would be awfully hard to see anything on Pluto, regardless of the side you were on in respect to the sun? Is this camera tricks with low light apertures or light amplifying electronics or computer enhancement? I'm not crying conspiracy, the photos in this video explicitly said they were enhanced, I understand, just wondering how much light they had to add while doing it and how they did it?
@astrumspace
6 жыл бұрын
The Sun would appear small in Pluto's sky, but it wouldn't appear like just any other star, you would really have to go to the outer edge of the limits of the solar system for something close to that. Pluto is actually pretty close compared to a lot of the objects in the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud. Instead, daytime on Pluto would act like twilight on Earth. The shutter speed would also be low to allow more light for each picture. Also, I don't know the specs of the camera they used off hand, but we are seeing consumer cameras coming out today with 5,000,000 ISO or more providing a bright shot in almost pitch black conditions, so photographing Pluto is really not outside the realms of technological possibilities even if it was very poorly illuminated. Hope this helps :)
@OttawaOldFart

I concur, the sun would be pretty bright when you consider we can see starlight that is billions of years old and just as far. It may not light up anything but the sun would as it is relatively close.

So strange to me that some people think Pluto being reclassified as a dwarf planet means it can't be on models of the solar system. It's gravitationally important, especially when it's closer to the sun than Neptune. It has a moon, and is an important marker for explaining distance in terms of other potential exoplanets. It's okay to be a dwarf planet, it's still there. It didn't go away.

@@forresthancock1939 ...Okay, I was a bit harsh. But here's the deal. Exposure time to capture a bright image like the full Moon (or Pluto) is typically around one 250th of ONE second. To capture even bright stars, you need an exposure time of at least 20 ENTIRE seconds. So you can't capture both in a single image, it isn't possible. Try it yourself. You own a camera of some sort, right? Next time the Moon is full, set your camera to automatic exposure/light metering, zoom in as far as you can on the Moon and take a shot. Then look at the image you get. You won't see any stars in it.

Alan Stern was the man who headed the New Horizons project and gave a seminar at my college recently. Seeing him was amazing. He was pretty short, has mostly gray hair, and he crosses his legs when he sits. And this regular guy just studied like crazy, worked insanely, and worked on a team of other phenomenal people to send a spacecraft all the way to Pluto, a 9 year journey in space, and 17 years of build up before that. As a mechanical engineering student I was so inspired. Everything we discover has to be discovered by a person. We all have the amazing potential to do extraordinary things if we work together and give our best. Hopefully this isn’t the last time we get to see the planet with the heart.

What I want to know is if Pluto and Charon will end up merging (and much slower due to the tidal lock and speed of rotation, so we at least know of the impact side). I also want to know whether or not Pluto’s other moons will eventually merge as well into one or two new moons as Charon and Pluto grow closer and closer together. Wish I could see what they could look like... and if the planet would be shoved closer or farther from the Sun. I hope Charon’s chemical makeup (and possible different atmosphere) will change Pluto into a different type of planet. It’s so exciting!

Well if you consider Pluto a planet, then you might as well consider the other dozen or so pluto-like planetoids that are beyond Pluto, actual planets now. Pluto doesn't have anything that makes it stand out from the group of other small planetoids. It's just like them, irregular orbit, very small size, and much further away than Neptune is from the sun. Point is, Pluto isn't a planet because that would mean we would need to add another 10+ planets to our list. 8 planets is a lot easier to remember than 20 in elementary school.

Pluto to me as an Astrologer has always been a Planet as it circulates Our Stellar Sun and Star. It even has satellites of its own. Pluto is Roman name for Hades, which in turn is name of Egyptian Osiris. Surely at the very edge of our Solar system, some mythical resonance affects our Simian Mind set, as we throw the technological proverbial bone into Deep Space. With "New Horizon" delving into the Kuiper belt and Helio Sphere. The Great Mystery of Unknown Space lies beyond.

@DankyTheSnake you mean in other solar-systems, not galaxies - and yes, its already proven that micro-bacterias exist on other planets in our solar-system, some sort of alien life in form of a few cells.
