It's crazy how everyone always talks about Infiniminer or RubyDung as the Minecraft precursors, but no one ever brings up Wurm. It's literally the closest thing to Minecraft before Minecraft, and everyone forgot.

One game you forgot to mention that Notch created before minecraft was Legend of the Chambered, which he started working on in 2001. He made multiple different versions of the game with the most well known version releasing in May of 2008. In the 2008 version of LotC, there’s various textures from that game that notch would directly rip and place into minecraft, those textures being Leather, Chainmail, Iron and Studded armour, the iron sword, apples, quivers, the inventory icons and even the text font that minecraft uses.

the mentions of "wow these textures look super reminiscent of early Minecraft" feel a bit silly imo. there's nothing exclusively Minecraft about the style there, that's just what amateur pixel art textures look like. Take the basic primary color of the thing you're trying to depict and add some subtle noisy detail. Minecraft didn't invent the concept of blue water
@Meshric

Ofcourse they are reminiscent of early minecraft, as early minecraft popularized the game with Notch's brand of amateur pixel art. It has a distinct look to it, with it's oversaturated colors and heavy use of noise in the textures. Minecraft didn't invent blue water , but you could easily tell if a game used minecraft's water textures

The game Miners 4K looks a lot like a Lemmings clone, which might have been the inspiration behind it. Also since that dungeon crawler is playable maybe you could do a quick playthrough if no one else has yet. I've actually seen Wurm Online as a game before, had no idea he worked on it. Should check it out.

One of my favorite games Notch made is called "VVVV 4k". It's a 4k version of the indie game VVVVVV, which I was obsessed with as a kid. It was actually my first exposure to Notch's work before I even really knew about Minecraft.

I think it would also be nice to note Minecraft 4k (a 4k minecraft-like terrain generator with a few block types) and Minicraft, the latter if I remember correctly was actually released before Minecraft, and is a top-down survival game sort of similar to, well, Minecraft, made for another 48-hour game jam
