I agree, this episode was very rushed, but that didn't mean I hated it either. Definitely should've been two to three parts, but I do think this is due to production issues and where CN/Adult Swim stands now. Anyways about this last episode and I feel this will get real deep. I really, REALLY hated that I saw some spoilers and I really went about trying to avoid those myself so I could witness it myself. Aside from that, this episode really did had me in deep emotions because even without those spoilers, I had a feeling Spear may no longer be around or be relevant to the era they would be currently in as shown in the painting he made. I knew right there that he was the last of his kind once standing there alone. As for the fight, again this was rushed, but I do want people to take this in. What the hell was Spear and Fang supposed to do against a demon of vengeance and that's where it really hit me... a sacrifice had to be made and when I saw Spear crying out to Fang when she got burned by the Viking and when Spear himself got caught into the fire engulfed in the flames, nothing mattered no more, but the people he wanted to protect, so he went all out to make sure that demon was pushed away as far as possible, even if it meant that Spear himself would die. Of course the Viking survived and somewhat Spear, but as the Viking said Vidarr, this might've meant his deal was done, therefore Vidarr itself took the Viking forever to be enslaved by it as an ironic thing. And now Mira comes in to rid of any of the remaining flames off of Spear. Now this is probably what some people thought was controversial which was Mira carrying over Spear's offspring. I get that some may have think, "Oh, this isn't a romantic moment." or "Is she really doing him all seared up that way?!", but I think it runs deeper (no pun intended) than that. I think in my opinion this was due to the fact that Mira saw what was on the painting of Spear's, she realized that he was the only one left and through all the things he put himself through to even save Mira, I truly think it was a "Thank you." than it was a couple's moment because you have to remember the world of Primal is to survive and spread life with no rules to dictate that whatsoever. Yes, it's sad that Spear and Mira may have not really had something that would probably have them be together, but I wanted to reiterate that Spear no longer feels to be a part of where he stands, so for better or worse this was perhaps the best course of action to go on about. Also to end this off, I do feel again this was rushed due to the problems going about Warner, but honestly I think I wouldn't want this to keep going as this was a good thing going and I would hate this to be ruined. I do get that Gennedy mentioned that Primal is a world that isn't just revolved around Spear and Fang, but maybe this should end for the better for the great work of art he's made through the production of this show and this will forever be one of my favorites.

Could also be that vidarr was insulted that he ended the deal when spear was still alive, but then again he killed more than just spear and spear died later. Maybe it got pissed he didn’t kill everyone there and just ended it when he got what HE already wanted. And for spear and Mira’s emergency child, it feels rushed and I get that back then and in some cultures, having a kid was just a replacement. And it didn’t set with everyone which makes sense and still could’ve been a two parter, but it wasn’t unacceptable

@@Dookieman1975 Maybe. Overall, even if Spear was to survive, he was without a doubt through and would no longer be the person he once was. Yeah and for that I think Mira in good faith wanted a part of Spear to be around because he meant so much especially for Fang.

I somewhat disagree. While I completely agree spear is super strong, durable, and badass, I honestly think spears bloodline was the only strong ones of his tribe. All the others ran and hid, while his father was the only one willing to fight. Unlike the vikings, it could be that the other members of spears clan only know how to flee, while the leader fights. Maybe spears great great grandfather, great grandfather, and grandfather were all fighting leaders, while the rest cowered.

In my theory, the Viking looked different in the shot right when Spear kept coming after getting put on fire. His eyes widened maybe that shock is what may have broken the pact or deal so to speak. But that’s just my bad two cents here. I do think that Vidarr can feel what the Viking feels and was angry how damaged that protective skin he had got from Spear smashing it repeatedly. The Viking probably felt this rush of emotions as well maybe even regrets or guilt that could have broken such a pact with Vidarr. I’m not too positive how the contract between them looked but the whole time the expression looked vengeful right until he saw Spear charging at him. I have many more thoughts about it but it’s all kind of meh in my own opinion.

When animals kill your family, generally revenge is taken on the animals, killing the whole pack, ensure safety. When it's a human and an animal, the animal doesn't matter. Generally the animal is a tool for the human to inflict pain. Considering the slavers thought other people were below them enough to use as slaves, I have no doubt they viewed fang as merely a dumb animal used by spear. The viking died, that's how he met Vidarr, the deal wasn't for him to come back to life but to get revenge. (And why would he want to? His entire family and all his friends were killed. He's completely alone in a world he made an enemy of.) So killing fang would be a bonus but spear is the main target. Being a god, I'd say Vidarr can tell when someone is bound for death or not. When spear was burnt to a crisp, Vidarr knew that the deal was done. The viking got his revenge because spear would soon die. The deal was to kill the caveman, not sit and watch the light leave his eyes. "The deal is done, he will die, now you will come back to me and serve me for eternity." Ironically the viking signed himself up for being a slave for all eternity after being a slaver for most if not all his life.

For me, if I had the creative control to just add/change a couple minutes of animation to the Season 2 finale, these below would be my highest priority ideas… *1.) Imply that Spear and Mira were already starting to get intimate, before they come ashore (EDIT: People have offered counterpoints in replies).* That way, it could avoid the awkward setup of Mira copulating with a burnt up Spear. Also, having their intimacy take place before they come upon her village could suggest that Spear did not think about living in civilization at the time. This prompts him to later feel conflicted when he draws himself being alone in his paintings, separate from Mira’s village. *2.) Allow Mira and Fang to participate more in the actual climactic fight, even if it is only for a bit.* For example, Mira could see them from a distance and try to shoot arrows at the resurrected chieftain. It does not damage him much, but it can briefly distract the chieftain to buy Spear and Fang some time. Once Spear and Fang are cornered on the mountaintop, Fang desperately grabs that small tree in her jaws, uproots it, and swings it at the chieftain (similar to how she was smart enough to push a battering ram in an earlier episode). The chieftain is staggered by the blow and burns Fang in retaliation, but it signals to both Spear and the audience that the chieftain can still be hurt with enough force, making him vulnerable. *3.) Have the chieftain reverting back to his regular human appearance and the demon’s hand dragging him down be two separate moments to focus on, rather than happening at the same time.* After the chieftain’s body is smashed against the mountainside and falls next to spear, he begins to revert back, as if his demonic power is leaving him. While Mira is putting out the fire burning Spear, the reverted chieftain and Mira lock eyes one last time. The chieftain is too weak and broken, so all he can do is futilely reach his hand out towards Mira and angrily growl “Vidarr!”, before the demon’s hand then reaches up to drag him back down. My intended implication is that the chieftain still had yet to fully satisfy his quest for vengeance, but he was killed again, forfeiting his one chance and making the demon come to collect his end of the bargain. *4.) Have Mira instead simply communicate to Spear that she is pregnant, during their final moment together.* Mira could feel a bulge in her stomach, get Spear’s attention, and point him towards that spot on her belly. Now, Spear has one more reason to at least die content. He nearly committed suicide after losing his family in the first episode, but now both Fang and Mira are living happily with a new family, because of him. *5.) If Genndy wanted to unambiguously have Spear be dead, as oppose to leaving the potential for him to still be alive (albeit crippled for life), a reunion between Spear and his old family could have been shown as an added bonus.* Like maybe towards the episode’s final shot, an image of Spear and his old family could briefly appear in the sky, as a callback to the first episode.
@TheLastKentuckyIrregular9524

I think you missed the point. Mira's last act was one of absolute compassion and sacrifice. Implying she was pregnant before then wouldve removed that. She had sex with him because she wanted dto bear him a child and continue his legacy, one last act of absolute irrevocable compassion. It wasn't about lust, but something deeper than that. And it was shocking because it was such a raw moment where she literally embodied the greatest essence of the primal woman. He died fighting to protect his family (primal man) and she sacrificed her time and possible health to carry on the species (primal woman). It was perfect.

Major agree with everything but Mira and Spear already having conceived a child on the seas instead of in the final scene. I don’t necessarily think Mira loved him in the lustful way, as nothing she really did prior indicated that. However he did protect her and manage to get her home to her people, hence fulfilling her greatest wish to live free. I think this was her way of fulfilling his greatest wish which was to have a family and continue on. I enjoy the complexity of their relationship and how it was more open for interpretation this way rather than dryly cut.

Definitely should of had 3 episodes or another season for spear death to build up. I really thought the fire demon was going to destroy/fight the Egyptians and that’s how spear escaped. Or he destroyed mira home and (I got spilled) one of her friends or father got burned. The demon idea may have been over kill to build up the hype and stakes, as it’s spear and fang hardest challenge yet. But now I just seems like. Spear's journey was great, with plenty of emotional discovery and the understanding of what life means, but also he became his own character. I knew that he'd follow in the footsteps of Action Dexter and Samurai Jack, so the direction of his character and the conclusion of his story really made him stand out. The crew worked well on him and gave a warm-hearted send-off. And besides, plot armor had to break at some point. I already was surprised that Fang survived the beat down at the hands of Krog, but a human-furnace not killing Spear, I mean come on!

i was looking up for if and when a seaosn 3 and i found this (its a copy paste) In an interview, while discussing the feedback on Primal Season 2’s ending, Genndy Tartakovsky revealed that he is thinking of writing a completely different story for the third season, following new characters more like an anthology series. Although he is ready to move on to new characters, he did accept continuing Spear and his family’s story in Primal Season 3 only if the fans desperately want it. of Course we want Spear! @@hernanperez5737 Probably wishful thinking but that doesn't necessarily mean Spear couldn't still show up in the future and this still be true. Spear's story is over, he's dead, but if he was taken to hell, that would be the spirit/ghost of Spear, not Spear himself. Spear being an evil spirit would ruin it though. I can see Spear being taken to hell because his actions ultimately killed people/a kid, but that doesn't make him evil. I think because Spear is NOT evil, he might actually go to hell willingly out of guilt. I can definitely see Spear being a protective spirit who looks after the daughter he wasn't able to raise, but not an evil one.

I said the same thing. It did feel rushed though I still enjoyed it. I was thinking it'd benefit from one extra episode where 10 would focus on Mira, Spear, Fang, and her children coming to Mira's homeland and the episode could end off with Mira seeing Spear's paintings on the wall. And 11 could further develop Spear and Mira's relationship and that'd make it so they could imply conception between them and THEN the Fire Demon fight and THEN Spear dies so it'd be less weird. But most importantly 11 could give us some screen time as to how Spear's death affected Fang and Mira. Like there was no grieving or anything it was just "Aw Spear's dead...whatever!" it felt like "Oh no! Anyway". But despite that I still loved the episode

I personally really like this ending cuz it shows a simple truth that we are all truly eternal and that even though spear may be gone he goes with his loved ones as they go on because Spirit lives on and his daughter Mira Fang and her two children and in the rest of the village so his story will never truly end and I think that is a beautiful positive message that not even just itself and stop the memory or someone's Legacy because that is the truth besides the truth that no one knows of a legacy it wouldn't even have mattered if he had had a daughter or not those who knew him good or bad he will live on in their memories and if anyone remembers the witch this kind of proves that this universe has an afterlife side personally like to believe that spear is reunited with his family and the rest of Fang's families well and that they're watching over along with spear that he's watching over Fang her three children Mira and his child and if there's a season 3 I can't wait to see maybe with Spears child

After losing his father, his tribe, his wife, his kids, and all the crap he went through this entire show he let out all his rage in that one moment and turned it into pure strength to where he was able to defy the very laws of nature and no longer fear pain. He legit punched hell itself IN THE FACE down a mountain and went full on PRIMAL to protect the ones he loved! He also got the only thing he ever wanted in the end.. Love. And that’s pretty poetic to me.

I did think the finale was a little strange, but at the same time, this show feels very much like the epitome of "its about the journey, not the destination." We know this show does not hold back with death and heartbreak. We know these characters will eventually die and most likely not from old age with the brutality of this world. It's still sad that Spear dies, but he dies after a long, badass life full of family, friends, and adventures that we get to see.

That was Spear teaching his son how to hunt in the older flashback. If you look up the episode where he starts to play with the shadow puppets in the cave during night, you can see that for a brief moment he imagined his kids sitting there and watching him doing his animal impressions and the son looks just like in the hunting flashback. I think their designs looked just different in the first episode because it served as an introduction to the show and was released way ahead of every other episode in season one, like a promo, so it’s likely that their designs have gone through some changes since then.

I could see the ending being longer. But I do feel like the ending was satisfactory. It was a good close to Spear’s story, defending the ones he cared about and having his legacy continued on with his child. Since I’ve heard that Gendie wanted to continue as a anthology series with Primal. It makes sense that he’d end the story with spear before going into different story’s. Did think it was weird that water didn’t do anything to the guy now that he had fire powers, and stone seemed to be the only thing that effects him. Spear did go out like a boss fighting him though. The way I red the scene was that the Viking guy did get his payback on Spear fatally wounding him. So the demon fulfilled his end of the deal so then he pulls the Viking’s soul back down to him. Obviously being a demon he wasn’t gonna let his savor the win. Was a little confused as to Mira’s background. I remember you saying she was Arabic before but I guess now she’s actually from Africa. Still think the ending was a bit more satisfying than what we got with Samurai Jack. Spear may have died in the end but his legacy lived on, and it wasn’t like the gut punch we got when Jack lost his lover at the wedding.

Pretty sure that even when given the Vidar powers, the viking still had somewhat of a human body. I mean a fall down a mountain would kill most anything, so damagining him might've been possible that way. Or Vidar perhaps thought that Fang and Spear were already dead. Since his vessel last saw Fang burning and Spear literally cooked alive. Possibly was also impressed with his fighting spirit. And thus took the viking back to hell since he thought their deal was upheld.

It would have been nice if it at least showed that he was into it, Like a smile or a tear or his hand caressing her or something. While it might've been more of a business decision, I like the fact Spear dies to Vidarr's transformed viking in almost like an afterthought. Kamau, and maybe even his people if they had more training, was like the peak of what human-kind could produce in the Primal setting. Even he expressed shock at the giant fire demon made of magic walking across the sea. Spear wasn't endowed by the power of Gods like Jack was from Samurai Jack. Spear's just an above-average neathanderthal or some form of hybrid of that and a homo-sapien. He's not written in a way that he can kill a God-like entity, and so while it might've been cooler to have more shots of him using his cunning to dodge and deflect the demon, it kind of shows off more of the power-scaling of this universe a bit. Where even powerful mortals like Kamau or Spear mounted on Fang would be burned alive by by a follower infused with only some of his God's power. We've seen something like this where the matriarchal deity from season 1 couldn't really be defeated by brute force alone. Or at least, it's implied as such when Lula made sure that Spear and Fang were far away from the deity before she sacrificed herself.

Personally I didn't like the fact that seemingly as soon as Spear found what he'd been looking for, he died and never got to enjoy it. I would've preferred an alternate sequence of the same events. Spear and Mira get back to her village, and Spear has trouble adjusting. Over time though, we see him begin to accept that this is his home now, and Mira/Fang are his family. Mira and Spear have a night together to "seal the deal" and THEN we do a time jump. We see an older Spear with grey hair. Mira is older now too, and their daughter is a young teenager. We see Fang and her now grown kids living alongside Spear's family, and Fang watches her children leave to go on a hunt. Spear paints their story on the wall of his home, and his daughter watches. All of a sudden... BOOM! There is a fiery explosion in the village, and Spear and co. rush to investigate. A giant fiery demon is fighting several of the village warriors, and they're losing. Badly. Spear sees the weapon and fighting methods of the demon, and when they lock eyes it's confirmed. The scorpion has found them again. Spear and Fang rush into battle against the Scorpion, and a similar battle plays out. Fang loses to the flames, and dies first. Mira, guarding her daughter, watches in horror as she sees Spear lose fang, then his eyes turn red as he tackles the scorpion, sending them over the cliff. Spear's family watch as the flames are FORCED out of the scorpion by Spear's savage blows, and finally they land on the ground, both lying still. Spear is barely alive, as his family rushes to his side. He says "mira" one more time as he breathes his last breath. The scorpion isn't dead though. As Mira cries above the body of Spear, the scorpion (once again in human form) grabs Mira and slams her to the ground, trying to choke the life from her. She begins to lose conciousness when a familliar bellow cries out, and a girl crashes in on the back of a T-rex, knocking the scorpion away. We get the shot of Spear's daughter on rexback, yelling with a spear in the air. Her eyes are red. A very brief battle ensues where the scorpion is fighting two t-rexes and spear's daughter, before she strikes the final blow. Her spear goes straight through the scorpion's mouth, as he falls dead. His corpse is then dragged to hell as everyone watches. One more fast forward, and we see a sequence of things. Spear and Fang are sealed in a tomb together, with their families and the village watching. The daughter uses Spear's paint to draw an image of him riding Fang on the stones. Later, as village hunters are trying to hunt a great beast, they're losing the fight. The final shot is one of the beast standing over a hunter, ready to finish him off. Then we hear T-rexes roar, and a loud human bellow as the beast turns in terror. Cut to black. Yeah, it's a lot longer than what the showrunners did, but dammit, I feel like Spear and Fang DESERVED more. This version is my fan-made ending I wrote while drinking pure copium. I was left very dissatisfied with the ending we got.

So originally, I also kinda felt the same way, that they kinda ran thru a succession of events a lil too quickly and that the episode could’ve ended right after Mira lays atop of Spear. But the more I thought about it, I liked the ending and thought “yeah that’s good, whatever questions I still have will probably be further explored next season im sure”. Expecting that there could be at least one more season of the series before it ends. But then I started to hear things that this is maybe the final season or at least the final time we would follow along with Spear’s storyline as Genndy is looking to pursue other projects. And after the whole Warner-Discovery debacle, who knows what’ll happen with the show now. So if this is the end as we know it, then I think it’s a good ending for the series

@@vexxama yeah it kinda reminds me of the night feeder. because of how similar both the deaths are. because they both suffer ironic fates. the night feeder for all the torment fear and death it inflicted upon others feels that very same fear that all those it has slaughtered has as it has its own life ripped away. where as the chieftain is forever condemned to be a slave to the scorpion king for all eternity because he enslaved and murdered countless lives and chose vengeance over everlasting peace. never being able to see his family again all because of the choices he made in life and in death. it just feels very similar to me because both of the deaths are just so ironic. although arguably the chieftain gets it the worst in my opinion.

Spear was clearly teaching his son how to hunt in the episode "A Cold Death". I don't get why so many people think that was Spear as a child.
@UngoogleableMan

I think it's because in that flashback his son looks bigger than he does in the "outline" we see him as in the pilot episode. In the pilot he looks like 5 years old. In the flashback he looks 9 or 10. But the pilot is like, we don't really see, and seeing your family get eaten might distort your perception.

I think that when Viking guy was dead or dying he made a deal with the Demon to sell his soul in exchange for revenge. He was transformed into a fire demon as part of the deal. When Spear was mortally wounded, the deal was fulfilled and the Demon reached up to claim Viking guys soul.

I personally feel like Spear should’ve died and then he would’ve met Mira’s god and because he did so much for Mira and worshipped the god too, it would’ve bestowed some sort of blessing upon Spear and allow him to fight the Vidar demon dude. I’d think that lessens it. Spear didn’t get any supernatural powers, he did that by being an incredibly strong and endurant warrior willing to die to win. That has its own kind of magic perhaps, but it wasn’t magic borrowed.

Hmm, I kinda got the feeling that after the fall Viking guy (whom I call Vidar) lost his thirst for revenge (b/c remember that when Vidar made the pact with the demon dude, the Scorpion King, he showed both Spear and Fang as targets) and so with his vengeance quenched the deal was complete and his soul was taken back to hell.

I feel part of the idea at the end with Vidarr taking him back to "hell" was that he did succeed in killing Speak, not a definite killing blow, but he was dead... on top of that, at that moment, they were both "Avatars of vengeance". So some respect. Not to mention that from here on, Viking dad is forever his slave. And regarding how rushed it feels... Not gonna lie, Gendy is amazing at story telling, but his endings always feel like that xD Samurai Jack had the same issue... Some comments say that Gendy has an issue with being stubborn on the ten episode format. He needs at least 12 to give proper closure but always tries to end it on ten xD

In a series about a man and dinosaur surviving together, it’s kinda disappointing we didn’t get a goodbye scene between Spear & Fang. We just needed 1 more ep. Echoes of Eternity dedicated to the demon battle, and another episode for Spears goodbye. Maybe take out the Mira reading Spears cave art scene and put it in the goodbye episode, that plus spears death taken out of that ep leaves more time for a more interesting last battle. Dedicate the REAL last episode to Mira and dying Spear realizing they love eachother before he kicks it, and have Fang accepting that her battle friend is dying and have a cute goodbye scene.
@ZillaTheTegu

I agree. Spear just kinda dies, and the show ends 13 seconds later. The viking wife got more screen time for her death then Spear did. I also feel like they should have gone all out with the final battle, or at least have it be a few min longer. Like watching two unstoppable forces collide with eachother, having Spear slowly get more and more exhausted, until his heroic sacrifice in the end. It really should have been 11 episodes.

Because the Viking chief was initially being retrieved by the Valkyries until Surtur dragged him to Muspelheim, I'm thinking that in this universe, whatever afterlife that character believes in actually exists and is where they'll go. Meaning, Spear wouldn't go to the same hell/underworld that the viking chief went to.
