Hope Jake reads this, I've been thinking a lot about getting a double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I know I could take Computer Engineering as my major. However, here are some of the reasons why I would be interested in a double major. 1. I want to study both fields at a deeper level and not just take a couple of extra classes like in a minor. For example, understand those concepts that a Computer Scientist would not study and those that an Electrical Engineer would not study in a Computer Science major. 2. Increase my chances of finding a job and being more competitive. I know that Electrical Engineering is flexible and could apply to jobs that a Computer Scientist could not. 3. Avoid being unemployed. In the future, if I were not able to find a job in Electrical Engineering, I would have the option of finding a job in Computer Science and so on. 4. Build a second source of income. I would not only want to depend on a source of income that comes only from my degree, but I would like to have at least two sources of income. 5. Experience the best of both worlds, and if possible in the future, be able to study two masters. I know that when one studies a double major, it takes more time and money. However, I would care more about job security, and I think the best way is to have two bachelor's. In this scenario, what would be the most advisable thing to do, to study Computer Engineering or a double major in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science? Please, can someone advise me? Just do CE. there's no point in the double major. If you feel like you want to dive deeper into a certain topic, do it for your technical electives are do some projects on your own in free time. You will really learn when you get an internship or job, the technical skills required. In school you'll learn more of the theory.

What is the difference between Computer systems engineering and Computer engineering?
@JakeVoorhees
3 жыл бұрын
Computer Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering are both subsets of Electrical/Electronics Engineering. Many universities do not even have computer engineering available. I glanced through the top four engineering schools, MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and CalTech and none of them have computer engineering. They have electrical engineering and computer science together sometimes, which is where you can build a custom “computer engineering-like” major. Computer engineering integrates electronic engineering with computer sciences. Computer engineers design and develop computer systems and other technological devices. Computer systems engineers implement the network architects' designs, and solve the complex problems involved in the day-to-day operations of networks. They frequently test system operations, identify security risks, and research new products or processes that will improve system function. As you can see, the word “systems” is used within the definition of either speciality, so we’re really starting to split hairs here. However, there is computer hardware engineering, which the BLS reports having 71,000 employed engineers in the USA right now which is actually 5th on the list right now (1. Civil 329k, Electrical 328k, Mechanical 316k, Industrial 295k, and then Computer Hardware 71k). These engineers do not focus on the integration of their designs within greater systems. But in the end, I do not think any of this matters. Any electrical engineer or computer engineer can work in so many of the same jobs or roles. The differences simply come down to preferences, such as what companies and roles you want to intern for, what tech electives you take in your 3rd and 4th years, what events and job fairs you focus on, what engineering organizations/societies/clubs you want to be involved in, etc. Does this help and make sense? Let me know any follow up questions that you have and I will try to help you with those. Thank you!

Being nervous taking any engineering program is completely 100% normal, but it is also so exciting. My advice is, if you still have a love for engineering but you seem to be falling out of computer, try a different field that is similiar. The beauty of engineering is how vast and numerous the fields are. You might end up not coping well with the computer program your school offers, but they might offer another degree close enough to what you wanted and it will work out better. Some degrees that are similar is computer science (programming side) robotics, electronics, electrical, mechatronics. All of these have overlapping classes but are different enough that you might find it better for your tastes. Keep at it

C/C++ are very prevalent, as is ASM (the exact “flavour” of which will vary). Rust is an emerging language in embedded development but is still quite immature, so you’ll find the most resources in the former three. :)

Ya it’s a cool field. I like that you can pursue either path. Computer Software Engineering and Computer Hardware Engineering. Here is more info about the software side, Computer science is the study of computers and computing as well as their theoretical and practical applications. Computer science applies the principles of mathematics, engineering, and logic to a plethora of functions, including algorithm formulation, software and hardware development, and artificial intelligence. Software engineering is a branch of computer science. Here is a video on that, “What Do Software Engineers Do?” kzitem.info/news/bejne/yW94r5-jrGmcdX4 I have a software job tier list video coming out tomorrow so stay tuned. Many computer engineers want to go down the electronics side of things and end up in mechatronics engineering. So Jake and anyone know what the diffrence and which one is the best between Electrical Engineers & Computer Science(EECS), Computer Engineers(CE), And (Computer Science & Engineering)?
@zombie-bv9pr
3 жыл бұрын
if your school has EECS, that's probable the most "prestigious" one, and generally they take intro classes in EE and CS and can pretty much do whatever they want for upper divs (all EE, all CS, or a mix). In my school CE is pretty much the same thing, but a little more strict with EE and CS upper div requirements (so like 50-50). CSE in my school is like 80% CS and 20% EE
@JakeVoorhees
3 жыл бұрын
Heyyyy, thanks for this. Here is a bunch of info about this stuff. Computer Science is just the programming side. Computer Engineering deals with the integration between computer hardware and the programming. Computer Engineering is a subset of electrical engineering. Computer Science and Engineering is CS but a step closer to CompEngineering. Sort of how Mechatronics is between Electronics and Mechanics. It's just in the middle between CS and Engineering. Often times Electrical Engineering is combined with Computer Science because so much programming is required in EE. These types of degrees focus even more on the CS side of EE, which I think is a great thing today. Information technology refers to computing systems used to collect, record, organize and access data. Many career paths are available in this broad field. Students can land most information technology jobs with a bachelor's degree in IT, computer science or other tech-related fields. You may wonder about the differences between a management information systems (MIS) degree and an information technology (IT) degree. While both degrees focus on the structure of networks and complex systems, MIS degrees tend to be more business-focused, and IT degrees emphasize computers and their functionality. The difference between information systems and information technology is that information systems incorporates the technology, people and processes involved with information. Information technology is the design and implementation of information, or data, within the information system. It's hard to know what to do. There are some really cool IT related positions out there with a lot of jobs and super good growth and a high salary. Example: Information Security Analyst, Database Administrator, Computer Network Architect are killer careers. Read about them via the BLS online. I really think engineering is the way to go for a degree because you can get into any career with that degree. It is a powerful piece of paper. I hope this helps and makes sense. Let me know what follow up questions you have okay? I respond to all comments. Plus, here I went and added IT career numbers to my master career document. You can see there are some good situations for IT-like degrees. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17aisgzdh-EILvLvT4zdM-9eGVSCex5qakAeRNsj0vbo/edit?usp=sharing Cheers!

Here are some that are my favorites that I suggest for young engineers. How to Win Friends and Influence People - Dale Carnegie The Power of Habit - Charles Duhigg So Good They Can't Ignore You - Cal Newport Good to Great - Jim Collins Never Eat Alone - Keith Ferrazzi That's a good start. Hey thanks for the comment. Yes I'm up at nearly 2AM ET responding to comments. So, computer engineering is essentially the same as electrical engineering in terms of degree and job situation. CE is 5th on the list with 71,000 jobs and sure EE has 328,000 but trust me EEs can work as CEs and vice versa, all the time. So don't switch. Even if you did, it doesnt really change the credits situation. I have had a lot of friends double major in EE and CE and essentially take like 2-3 extra courses only. What type of career are you trying to have? What makes you consider switching in the first place? That is the interesting part to me. Does this help?
