The most important fact about the US that everyone seems to miss is that there is only one aspect of it that is democratic. People vote. That's it. There is a choice between two corporate funded right wing parties. This is not a democracy. In the Netherlands where I live and vote, there is a choice between 30-40 parties across the political spectrum. Government is by consensus and proportional representation. Two party systems by their very design can be very antagonistic as they are in the US now. And the US doesn't seem to be aware that the rest of the modern world has inexpensive universal healthcare, no-one owns guns, there are multi party choices, further /higher education is affordable , there are no militias, many foreigners are accustomed to travelling all over the globe, massive poverty, obesity, and more. These days the US is exceptional, exceptionally bad. I mean, not believing in climate change !!!!!!!! The US is not a beacon; it is the opposite.

He isn't even right, whatever happens in the US happens here. There had been this tiny fringe group in Germany that still saw themselves as citizens of the German Empire, nothing more than an oddity to laugh at, but with the rise of conspiracies in the US particularly QAnon, the covid deniers and so called "Reichsbüger" have started to become an actual voice of radicalization even here in Germany. The same happened in 2016 with the rapid rise of right wing movements, it's not fun at all, to literally see your own future projected in front of you, the fact that a far right party even has a seat at the table in Germany of all places is abhorrent.

This just finally makes clear how successful the original "public relations industry" has been since World War I - later called the "propaganda industry." It's stunning how Americans still think of themselves as being "exceptional" and better off than anyone else on the planet. I'm still astonished at how thoroughly indoctrinated most Americans are over how their taxes should be used. In other forms of democracy we expect our taxes to be used primarily to improve everyone's standard of living. Taxes are for things like schools, and essential services and health-care, where access should be equal and profiteering improper. But only in America will people think that for their taxes to be used to provide health-care for everyone would be an outrageous infringement of their liberty. They actually *want* to be sucked dry by insurance companies and what America calls the 'health industry' and still pay such high taxes. They are economic slaves to the corporations but seem to think it's all right and proper.

As an Aussie watching America right now, I’m just shocked by the lack of empathy. I know that that many Americans consider their political party to be a key part of their identity, and this seems to create a sense of us vs them. But where is the basic empathy for people on the other side? Liberals can’t get pissed off at Trump supporters if they’ve never sat down with a farmer and had a chat to someone doing it tough in the Midwest. I think if they did they would understand why some voters are happy to see someone destroy a system that has neglected them and left them behind. I think Trump is dangerous to American citizens and democracy, but removing him will not fix most of America’s issues.
