A zip pocket for a key. I always look for that in any shorts or leggings I buy as it’s a pain if you don’t have one. I use a belt for my phone on most training runs but it’s nice to have the option to run without the belt for a parkrun or race.

The only things I had when I first started running were running trainers, running socks and a sports bra. I just ran in a tracksuit pants I had around, a non-cotton T-Shirt and a hoodie. A work colleague who encouraged me to start running gifted me a Garmin watch as she was getting a new one. After a while I transitioned to getting gloves, a running Mac, upgraded to running pants, then tights, then tops; I now have a fantastic long sleeved Proviz top for running in darker/low light conditions. Black Friday is coming up, so new runners should keep an eye out for running gear on sale.

Great tips, thanks! Can I add a few comments? - I bought too many t-shirts when I started! Once you start entering races (when they return), you'll have so many ... - The buff ('neck tube') is the best thing ever. It can be folded into a headband, cap, scarf, face mask, sweat band and more. If, like me, you wear specs, it helps keep them in place when worn as a headband. Unlike a cap, it can be wrapped around a wrist and ignored when your head gets too hot. - I always look for shorts with a zipped pocket, to keep ID/keys etc safe even if I have a tumble. - If you're not squeamish about 2nd hand, keep an eye on charity shops - many people take up running but give up and donate little-used gear. It's a cheap way to try things out. Great channel guys!

When you start running you likely wont be able to run for long. Running tights for cold weather. As a man, I bought loose fitting jogging trousers/pants. I found that the sweat was soaked up by the fabric and, because its not always in contact with your skin, it immediately turned into cold water and the next time the fabric touched your skin it was cold and wet and not nice. It's tights for me from now on. Waterproofs also have limited use. They are only really necessary if its really windy to stop you getting cold.

I love my 3/4 tights for cooler weather and full tights under shorts for cold. What with the polar vortext temps the last few years, I've got a fantastic pair of Nike sports "sweats" that I've thrown over the shorts and long tights. The great thing is that they are lined with the warm fleecy stuff, but they're *also* wicking (like the tights and shorts) and so they provide that extra layer of air/wind protection and still move the sweat away from me. I got them as a present, so not sure how much they run these days, but they certainly seem like a great thing that everyone could use when running in super-cold temps!

I’m glad you pointed out the details about the socks. The socks were a subconscious game changer for me. I recently purchased running/athletic socks (that I’m currently wearing) and while you were talking about the seam, I was literally checking my socks for the seam. The seam above the toe has always been an issue for me even when I wasn’t running and was often quite painful. It never occurred to me that these socks didn’t have a top seam, which now makes sense as to why I haven’t had any trouble with them! So, seamless toe-socks were my game-changer. 🙂

Meh, all you really need is a t-shirt, shorts and shoes. And so does almost any other sport. However, you don’t need to pay money to rent any equipment or any fees making it cheaper than most other sports. Most expensive part is probably the shoes, if you run a lot, and need to switch them around, and an investment in a watch.

You don’t need any shoes or socks if you take up running barefoot (as any running newbie should do for their own good and sake). You don’t need underwear either if you wear shorts with built-in brief liner. Running watches aren’t necessarily an upgrade compared to smartphones. Quite often the recorded GPS signal of running watches is less precise and accurate than that in built-in A-GPS smartphones, are usually significantly slower on time to (first) fix, lose signal sooner while going through tunnels or subways, most of them can’t display maps (what can be very useful if you are running in or going to some place unfamiliar to you), in those few rather expensive watches that can display maps, these are much harder to read, and finally, no running watch has a torch to illuminate your way at night. The only clear drawbacks of smartphones compared to running watches are that they’re bulkier and heavier than running watches, have less battery life while recording GPS signal, and are less sturdy without a decent protective case (what also makes them bulkier and heavier).
