Average youtuber: "Hello and welcome to my new video guyyyys, hope you're all doing fine, today I'm gonna talk about..." Surv: "In order to understand complex concepts, we must first define terms to describe aspects of the concept in a concise way."

Microsoft should launch an AOE2 university and hire both Survivalist and Spirit of the Law as professors. I think I've learned more from especially these two than my actual studies 11.

That part won't change as everybody will continue to use words the way they prefer. I also find that I would probably define things a little differently here and there regardless. It is cool to have the conversation though. It at least opens the door to the possibility of universal agreement.
@Hjoerleif

@@MadnessTW Precisely! Definitions don't make people use words in a way but it opens the door to easier standardisation of the use of words since there is something good to refer to which I appreciate greatly

Very cool video! To nitpick, I would say that when there is relevant text on the screen, the verbal description should either be delayed or read what is on the screen, otherwise I have to pause to read the text, and resume the video to listen to what you're saying. This is notably the case at 11:05.
@SurvivalistAoE

True. I seem to think of relevant information after the script is written/audio is recorded. The text is usually just me rewording something. I think that it help emphasize the point of what I'm saying, especially for people who zone out a bit while watching.

Also, I'd like to define macro and micro in a different way - Micro means to focus on a small part of the map(say what's happening on the screen). Let's say there is archer or mangonel war or you push deer you cannot afford to glance anywhere else except a small portion of the map - that's micro. Macro means to focus on the big picture. Constantly glancing over your eco, scouting, production buildings for gather points, thereby systematically executing a complex plan.
@SurvivalistAoE
2 жыл бұрын
I think the important part here is that for micro, you have to be paying close attention to something. I think maybe there could've been a fourth category called awareness that would cover what you're talking about. When you're doing a mangonel push and you have to watch out for enemy mangonels, you don't necessarily have to micro much, but you do have to be aware so that you can micro when and enemy mangonel shows up.

A consistent thing I've noticed is that low level players decide strategy exclusively on civs, map type and positions in team games. Whereas higher level players tend to take elevation, distance to enemy and team, ease of walling, active scouting and even resource count. Higher level players also place many outposts and towers just at the right spot at the right time instead of filling their whole base and taking no chances.

No one knows what the future holds. Maybe there will be a time when aoe4 is super polished and people give it another try. I think that they would have to have a microsoft organized leagues system like t90's titan's league before people will think about going to aoe4. You're right though, a lot of this stuff is general rts knowledge and can be applied to other games.

Why does the arrow go from "information gathering" to "planning" instead of "decision making"? With the information that I gather during the game I cannot go back to the planning table but can only do adapted in game decisions.
@SurvivalistAoE
2 жыл бұрын
You want to use the information that you gather to possibly select another plan from the ones that you already had (or make a new plan if you're against something you haven't seen before and don't have a plan for). If you scout that your opponent is going pikemen vs your knights, then you go back to the planning phase and look at the plans you have. For example, you might have scorpions, crossbowmen, and skirmishers as your plans. Once you remind yourself of these plans, then you go to the decision making phase. If you didn't open archers and don't have an archery range, then maybe you choose to go scorpions. You can't go from information gathering to decision making as you have to populate your list of decisions by thinking about things from the planning phase (remember, all strategy is stuff you think about so this might only take a second for your brain to think about, but it's an important step)
@TheMaxkraus

Very understable. Of course you cannot just make any (random) decision without "planning". The bullet points underneath "planning" seemed all to be "pre game planning" points and not so much ingame decision preparation to me.
