That shield is not just the size of a double door, it's also almost twice as thick than your average door. Safe to say you couldn't carry those around on one arm each, but if you could, they'd be pretty damn effective at stopping pretty much anything weaker than a siege weapon.

As a dark souls 3 fanatic, these are about the most unrealistic weapons in dark souls (Excluding the magic stuff). Well, there are twin great swords that you swing around but, yeah. Anyway they are very good for blocking literally everything. And the statement that nothing but a siege weapon is taking these down is absolutely true. Fuck I can hit it with a lightning spear from the heavens and it won't do shit (Mainly because miracle builds suck). But my point still stands that if someone has stamina and that shield you're not getting through.

Japanese warriors actually used shields prior to the Nara period, though we're talking before 700AD, so quite a lot earlier than the kind of samurai talked about here. Also, kind of funny to see a picture of a shield and then you saying "it's called a Tate", which is literally just Japanese for shield, lol. In addition to the Screen shields, they also used small iron round shields in the 11th to 13th century as well as a scutum-like, laquered wooden shield type plus rectangular wooden shields, that over time got simply hung over the shoulder a large arrowproof pouldron. But with the arrival and massproduction of tanegashima and teppo tipe weapons the shields mostly lost their purpose.

Actually, the history and evolution of shields in Japan is a very fascinating topic of review. To give a short version, they had walls, which became mobile walls, which became shields, which became mounted shields, which became additional armor. A lot of those Famous armor peices you see, with those additonal plates on them, was just forms of evolved shields, as they needed both hands for their weapons, so attaching the shields to their shoulders, waists etc was just the natural evolution

They also used to sword-and-shield with some smaller shields like that. But that was pre-Nara Period. You would carry a Tsurugi (A straight, usually one-edged but sometimes also double edged sword, usually the size of an european Arming sword) and such slightly smaller shields. Also, china's been sword and shielding for most of its existence aswell. Usually with a Tang and a shield (forgor its name). Also, Tate were replaced by large Bamboo walls in the sengoku period. Thats because Tanegashima guns startet to become a common infrantery weapon, and a simple wodden door wouldnt protect you from becoming the first medival american commoner. At some point, bows were only used by Samurai on horse back/for hunting.

a lot of people didn't know that Japan had shields because the old Japanese era we most often recognize today is the Edo period set in the 1600s to late 1800s. by this period, firearms have already been introduced to common soldiers, with Oda Nobunaga popularizing it's use among his men, hence why shields were ditched as they have been rendered obsolete.
