Isn't there a grocery store near you in Alaska? It's such a beautiful state, so lots of people like to go live there. A former bf of mine moved up there many years ago. He fished for a time, and married one of his boss's daughters! He later sold smoked fish, & made a decent living. He kept telling me how beautiful it is up there, & if I could see it for myself I'd want to stay too. The quality of the burgers you bought could be so much more delicious if you'd buy grass-fed organic ground beef. I buybit at about $9 per lb. I make 4 burgers. If I buy a good burger on Grubhub it'll cost mev$20 - $26 plus fees, taxes & tip. I only do it once in a while but now re-entering a necessary frugal phase. I live in MA. We don't pay taxes on groceries. If we buy food at a restaurant, we do pay taxes plus a tip - usually @ 20%. One of the things being proposed by Trump & Project 2025 is to eliminate some taxes, like maybe income taxes & instead charge tariffs of 10% on everything - even groceries. Ugh. I save money when I cook for myself & I cut out any junk food many years ago. I don't like it, so that's not hard for me. I do buy some unhealthy desserts once in a while, which are expensive - even for a tiny slice of cake ( $5 to $7) or a cookie ($3.60 - $4) and they're not anywhere as good as home made - even if from a mix! Like those frappes or whatever you'd call them, they must cost at least $5.00 each. Luckily for me, I'd prefer a cup of black or green, unsweetened tea. Which at home costs almost nothing, though green tea has been getting more costly - but at home, it's far less than in a coffee shop. Now, being summer, I've been making cold drinks by mixing 1 tsp freeze-dried pomegranate juice with about 1/3 tsp of freeze-dried orange or freeze-dried lemon juice. It's very satisfying & good for my health instead of regret & feeling queazy. If you make your own frappes or blender drinks, at least you know what's in it. Sometimes, if I feel like something sweet, I'll add about 1 level tsp or less organic, cane sugar to thebpom & orange juice. It's refreshing & costs far less than a can of syrupy soda (ick). If I want, I can add some locally made, calorie free, real fruit flavored Polar seltzer, @ $1.00 or less for a whole bottle so less, for a 6 oz glass full, and /or a splash of vodka or whatever. Total cost - ? Not as much as a can of soda, probably, but I don't know what they charge for that. The cost of our food & everything goes up when the cost of gasoline & labor goes up, so will only go up over time. and we may be tacking on new tariffs next year, & maybe have to pay state taxes too, if Trump is elected. We can at least grow our own veggies - even in Alaska but the growing season is shorter up there, so you have to plan ahead & know when to start seeds & whether they can be started indoors, weeks before your last frost date, or planted directly out in the soil. Some plants like salad greens, radishes, etc. can be planted fairly early. Some things need cool weather but still need row cover protection from frosts which can come in spring or fall, even after several warm days. It's a bit tricky but still worth a try! ❤
