Boston's done a decent job over the years too with guys like Swayman, Pastrnak, DeBrusk, MacAvoy, and it looks like they may have a real one in Lohrei once he does some growing too. When the Bruins had their perfection line, Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak, one of the neat things about that line was that it was 100% homegrown talent. Bergeron played his whole career in Boston, Marchand looks headed that way as he hits the back nine of his career, and Pastrnak is on that path at the moment as well.
@ryanmatthew8491

Knies, Cowan, Woll are all on that level. But comparing to the Stars is pretty unfair when they’ve easily been the best drafting team in the league in the past few years. They got Robertson, Heiskanen, Oettinger all in the same draft and Johnston and Stankoven in the same draft. Also would help if they’d keep their 1st round picks instead of trading them to get bounced in the playoffs.
@hagamapama
4 ай бұрын
@@ryanmatthew8491 Knies is not on that level just yet. I'd put him as maybe on the same level as Jake DeBrusk if I was being really generous. Dude's career high is 35 points. Love the kid's attitude, but let's not go overboard here. I see him being a very productive and popular bottom 6 forward -- not a bad asset, but not exactly David Pastrnak. Woll I'd rate at about the same level as Anton Khudobin once you factor in his ability to stay on the ice. I think that's a really good comparable for what Woll has shown so far, really really solid backup goalie who can start for a couplee weeks at a time if he needs to. That's a valuable player, but it's not exactly Dominik Hasek. As for Cowan talk to me about him when he's on the Leafs roster. Hell, talk to me when he's a Marlie. Until then, he's just a prospect like hundreds.

When you trade marner or Tavares, you don’t need to necessarily go for players. You can always trade them for picks straight up. “Why would they do that? They’re trying to get better” Because you can then flip those picks for a need. Some examples are Bo Horvat being traded for a 1st rounder and assets, those assets were then flipped to help get Filip Hronek and Nikita Zadorov. 2 huge pieces that have helped the Canucks this season. Or the Lightning trading J.T Miller to the Canucks for a 1st and assets and then Flipping that 1st rounder Blake Coleman. Who helped add depth to a cup winning team. There Will be teams who will gladly trade picks for Marner this off-season. Which then you can use those picks to pursue rebuilding teams with good players to help fix either the goalie situation, add a piece on defence, or add to the forward group.

@ryanmatthew8491

Marner has one year left at over 10mil. I doubt any team with capspace is trading for one year of Marner. They’re gonna have to send contracts back. Leafs would be dumb to retain. Horvat and Miller were getting paid significantly less than Marner is. Tavares isn’t getting traded. Or at least shouldn’t be. You saw the price to dump Marleau’s contract. Just wait the year out on him, Marner actually has value.
@adamspark9259
4 ай бұрын
@@explorer4161 Trades shouldn't be judged for on paper value. If they do have a solid plan for flipping the picks, it could be great. Trading for short term pain can turn into major long-term gain, and I think thats what the Leafs need right now. The salary cap has changed trading. No longer is it just about trying to get as much value in return as you are giving up. The cap space freed up by swapping a Mitch Marner for draft picks can be a golden opportunity in the free agent market. The core four are not getting it done in Toronto, and even worse, their contracts are limiting the possibilities for acquiring players who might get it done.
@chevelle1
4 ай бұрын
The problem with your comment is that nobody else in the league values Marner like TO does. You’re probably going to have to give up an asset to another team for taking him. That or retain salary. Marner wouldn’t want to do it anyways and this is a contract year and he has the most lucrative winger job in the league for padding points. Most TOI, plays with best goal scorer in the world, out for last minutes with opposing goalie pulled, etc. plus he gets to play the assist/setup guy (usually centermans role) while staying on the perimeter. Not required to sacrifice his body, the list goes on.

The Leafs should stop ignoring their main issues: 1) Marner needs mentorship - to adjust for playoff officiating, back check all the way to the Leafs net on a rush, and to play his heart out for Leaf Fans (not just for being treated as a God in Toronto) 2) Release Shanny as he is a redundant now 3) Give Matthews the opportunity to be an elite playoff winger 4) Move JT to the 3rd line where the play is slower 5) Protect Morgan on defence - play him in the 3 to 5 d man spot now 6) Start developing new Leafs to complement the Core 4 7) With good Leaf Executives in 2 to 3 years the Leafs might be in development position to compete. Ordering this Leaf Team to win right now - is like charging the wrong cannon in a war 😀

As a non-leaf fan (pens fan). I think traded both Marner and Tavares would be ideal, although im unsure how legitimate that idea is. Trade marner to nashville or calgary for Saros or Markstrom plus either some depth or picks to retain cap space. Then trade tavares to somewhere for hopefully a younger top 6 dman and maybe couple prospects. If you can trade both of them to get a starting goalie, young top 6 dman, and about 10M in cap space i think that would be huge. Spend that 10M to resign domi and bring in a legit 3C. Revamp the Dcore a bit and become deeper. The cup isn't won by teams with 1 or 2 good lines, they are all deep teams with at least good goaltending.

I agree with you. You ride it out a year, be bad next near, and then you lose jt contract, fuck resigning him he's an old bum now. The problem with that plan is you have nothing to trade, so you need to fill the holes in free agency which is very hard, and almost always you overpay for people in free agency. That being said, what do we need... A goalie? And a top 2 d? What else do you want as a fan? Anyone saying lose marner for any reason other than we got exactly what we needed from him is an idiot imo.

Only way I’d keep Marner is if there’s no possible trades that are worthwhile or he won’t waive his NMC. Letting him walk for nothing and wasting another year of Matthews contract would be awful. Tavares should not be moved whatsoever. They’d have to retain AND add a 1st rd pick+. Fuck that.

Marner for Ehlers + Perfetti 🤞 And bring back Domi if he will sign for 4.5mil or less at 3-4 years. Don’t sign Bertuzzi or Brodie for the love of god. Try to sign Demelo and one of Stolarz/Brossoit/Nedeljkovic. Trade Robertson for a second pairing dman if you’re not gonna play him in the top-6.

@ryanmatthew8491
4 ай бұрын
@@maahes7139 the reason I suggest it is because Perfetti was scratched throughout the playoffs and both Ehlers and Perfetti were demoted from the top-6 in the regular season. Neither of them are gonna wanna stay in Winnipeg and they could use a guy like Marner feeding Connor and Scheifele. Plus Ehlers was invisible in the playoffs because the Jets don’t know how to use him properly. He needs short shifts to be effective but his line mates take longer ones.
@pomerlain8924

@@ryanmatthew8491The difference though is that the coach who kept demoting them has now retired. And if they can find a coach that knows how to better deploy a young player like Perfetti better, he could have a breakout year. Ehlers should be shopped as his playoff production is dreadful.

How about Kevin Lankinen from Nashville as backup for Woll? He might be available IF preds wants to start bringing Askarov up to get some starts in NHL. He is projected to be their future starter after all. Lankinen is very solid backup and can take over for some time if Woll gets hurt.

The Leafs goaltending and Defense was not an issue for me. The forward groups needs more grit and depth scoring. They need a Sam Bennett and a Lawson Crouse. They need a Scott Laughton as the their 3rd line centre. They need a skilled winger like Travis Konecny who will come to battle.

1. You could probably trade a 3rd for Silovs or sign de smith problem solved there 2. if you go into next season with the Marlies having a tandem of Akhtyamov and Hildeby thats pretty solid considering they will be decent options to come up and play should you need it for injury purposes 3. Any Marner trade I'd say find players who have 2-3 years on their ELC's that you can use for cheap that have some potential

Leafs had Holmberg at 3rd center, Lilly and Lybush the only right shot d-men, and no reliable goalie. so, filling those perennial gaping holes are the priority, = sign Stephenson, Pesce, Talbot. Sign Domi before trading Marner. Still enough cap space to sign left d man Zadarov. Marner trade can target another nd or 3rd center, and Dman, esp. to help pp & pk. &/or playoff goalie, = Clmbs, ,Vncvr, Nashville,

I really don’t think there will be a lot of trade value for Marner. His regular season numbers are great, but his playoff reputation is questionable, he has a huge contract, and 1 year from UFA. Nobody will pay top price given all of that… IMO, they may get a ~2nd rd pick, and/or an average prospect, and likely with a contract in return, given the other team needs to make 11M in space. And that is assuming Marner even agrees, given his NMC…. 🤷🏻♂️

Lindholm used to be making $4.8 mill, pretty cheap. Monahans last contract was $1.9, Toffoli 4.25, Kane signed a $2.75 mill contract. You can get these guys for wicked cheap. All of those guys could replace Marner in cap, almost. Then you can start really having a deep roster, lots of scoring depth, which is necessary in the regular season and playoffs. And the points all of those guys put up will be more than what Marner plus a few mediocre guys can do.
