Here’s my original comment: starastronomer so after listening to some of your review and reading your comments, now I understand why it’s mostly negative. You only use telescopes from the Televue, TEC, and Astro-Physics. You also stated you don’t use Meade or Celestron. Are you saying those companies are all garbage? Even the Meade LX850 telescopes? I looked up the brands you ONLY use, the CHEAPEST TEC telescope is almost $7000!!! No wonder you look down on the other brands. You’re using the AMG Mercedes-Benz of telescopes and you wouldn’t be caught dead in a Ford or Chevy, figuratively speaking, am I right? I understand what you’re getting at with this video, but is there anything positive to say or anything instructional for those that can’t afford those ‘Benz’ scopes, which is the vast majority of amateur astronomers? I hate that the bigger brands cut corners but if they kept the quality up, the prices of the lower end telescopes will go up due to inflation and cost of material and labor, causing consumers to complain about higher prices on the same telescopes and not buy them. Plus what is the level of interest between the generations? Most millennials and iGeneration kids are more interested in technology, social media, and being “woke”. Believe me, I’m a millennial myself, I’m just thankful I grew up in a time where the internet was just barely taking off. Kids still knew how to play, use their imagination, and enjoyed more simple toys such as bicycles, dolls, BB guns, and TELESCOPES. Anyway, without interest, the companies have to find some way to stay in business and keep their products affordable. Here’s my add-on: I’m not doubting your experience and your review of this telescope and the similar models from the other brands. I’m basing my observation off of the commenters who viewed it as all negative, as I stated previously. Now if they’re wrong and I’m wrong, by all means feel free to say so. I’m also not here to compare each other’s experience in the hobby, because for one, I’m 35 years old, not 61. I’ve been into astronomy since I was really young but got my first real telescope when I was 16... an 8 inch Dobsonian from Orion. I’ve been on a fairly long hiatus due to serving 10 years in the Marines, going thru college, getting married, buying and owning a home (which a lot of millennials do not have) and advancing my career. Now I decided to restore my old XT8 that my kid brother partially ruined (all the eyepieces and finder scope) while I was away in the Corps and wanting to get back into the hobby. I’d also like a cheap short tube refractor just to poke around with and it gets confusing with all these ‘experts’ with conflicting opinions.

Rick Tatorship...First thanks for your 10yr service in the Marines. As to the points you bring up I will try to answer. As I pointed out in the video everyone has their own opinion on what is acceptable. When it comes to optical quality and listening to users that are very happy with the equipment they use I am amazed when I view through it and the image is "soft" and never gets to a "tight, sharp" focus. They are satisfied with the image produced and that is all that matters. I have been into the hobby since the age of 10 and still at it 50 years later. I often get asked what scope they should buy. Of course I have to ask how much do they want to invest and 99.9% of the time it is $100 to $200. Fact is [IMO] you get nothing for that today. So, I thought it would be best to do a video of an actual example. A picture [or video] tells a thousand words as they say. This way I would point them to my video and they could see for themselves if they may be happy with spending the money. If they are then so be it. It is not my position to tell them what to buy but what to look out for and will it fit their needs. You mention I only use certain brands of scopes and that is true. I also only use refractors as my telescope of choice but that doesn't mean reflectors aren't good, just not my "cup of tea." Now the use of the word "garbage" as you stated is in the eye of the beholder. Please let me be clear, in all my years I personally have never been happy with the optics nor mechanics of Clestron's or Meade's scopes. But they sell tons of them so my opinion means nothing. I certainly am not "looking down" on other brands as you stated nor being a snob. I own a Honda CR-V but to the car aficionado it would never make there list. It just means the Honda is an ""acceptable"" vehicle for my needs and what I am willing to spend on a car. Originally you state you did not see the whole video. Please do. I believe you will find my video on point and just showed the facts as to this particular scope and what you will get at this price point. I am not telling people to buy a "Benz" as you point out. Just be aware of what you will get, that's all. Sadly most scope manufacturers do cut corners these days as do many manufacturers of many products. The buyer has to decide if the "cut corners" item will still be okay. As to interest level that is determined by each person. You are so correct that the hobby of astronomy is getting to be an "old man's hobby" as so many youngsters are only interested in the phone in front of their nose. Many years back, Oct. 28-2004 our astro club had open observing of a total lunar eclipse at a park. I took my small Astro-Physics "Traveler" telescope which was 105mm in diameter. Put it on an alt/az mount to keep it simple. All kinds of scopes there from big Dob's to those Celestron and Meade's. No one came up to look through my "little" scope. Finally a lady asked if she could have a look. She gasped with amazement and said the view through my scope was the best she saw. She called her daughter over and when word got out I had a long line of viewers. A well designed, quality telescope is hard to beat. I wish you could look through all types of scopes at a star party and decide for yourself. Believe me, when it comes to the mechanical construction certain manufacturers are miles apart. A guy in my club "blew" a circuit board because of the simple fact his Celestron used the exact same plug used for 12v power as it did something else. Needless to say he plugged the 12v power cord in the wrong port.....OUCH! No self respecting company would design something like that. Another thing to consider is customer service after the sale. Unfortunately "cheap" and "quality" don't always merge together. And in telescopes that's not a good thing. As to you saying I wouldn't be caught dead with a Celestron or Meade you are 100% spot on! BUT, that does not mean it isn't for others, just not for me. Ultimately each person decides what makes them happy and if a "sloppy" mount and "mediocre" optics is okay. You just need to spend more than several hundred dollars to get something better. This video is a stepping stone for each to do more research before making a purchase. As always, go to a local astro club and see various scope designs for yourself and be a knowledgeable buyer. Also, I am no expert, just always trying to learn new things. No matter how long you have done something you are never too good to not learn.

starastronomer Thank you sir for reply. Hey there’s nothing wrong with the CR-V, I like Honda. I prefer Ford and Honda. Other than a Mustang, a CR-V would complement my F150 as a daily driver, if the need ever arises. “Cheap” used to have some quality a little while ago. I read a lot of praise on the forums about the Orion ST80. All metal construction and decent optics for an achromatic short tube refractor. Unfortunately Orion and it’s geniuses in their marketing department discontinued that scope and replaced it with a more plastic-y version of it with subpar optics. Luckily that same OTA lives on as the Meade Infinity 80, Meade Adventure scope 80 and the Celestron Powerseeker 80az. While I was checking out the Infinity 80, I saw the Meade infinity 102 and wanted to take a closer look, that’s how I came across your video hahaha. I still prefer the Infinity 80 though considering the OTA is more robustly built than the plastic 102. The mount and tripod seems to leave a lot to be desired but that can be replaced later, I just want the OTA. I plan to only use this to get my scan around the night sky and to use for travel and daytime viewing, my 8” Dob will provide the better deep space views. It has been a dream since i first got my Dob as a teenager to go to a star party and looking through all the different telescopes. Once I have enough eyepiece time with my current telescope and my new 80mm, if the interest is still there, then I’ll invest in a much better scope. I may have to wait until I move out of the city, New Orleans, before I can do that. I miss the night skies of Arizona where I grew up, here I’m lucky to count maybe 10 stars in the sky, not including planets. You’re right though, a refractor is still the best telescope design, too bad they get so darn expensive. Anyway, I’m just rambling at this point, thanks again for the detailed reply, clear skies!

The bigger manufacturers like Meade and Celestron still continue to make great high end scopes but the low end/budget scopes are disappointing in some areas. Cutting corners on the eyepieces, mounts and more plastic parts. The actual optical tube assemblies do have decent glass for what they are on some of these low end scopes though. The main problems are the diagonals and eyepieces. I own many scopes now after 30 yrs in the hobby of astronomy and the first scope I bought was a Meade 114mm newtonian in the 1980s. Almost entirely constructed of metal. Solid mount as well. Eyepieces were Kellner variants. The newer MA Kellner type on the scope you reviewed are useable but no where near the quality they once were. The Meade Plossls eyepieces are a very good upgrade and a better 90degree diagonal also would help. So anyone purchasing this scope can improve the scope to some extent. Sad these companies are cutting corners yet still keeping the prices up on the budget scopes. Same price back in the 80s but more quality back then. The Celestron Powerseeker budget line is by far worse than a Meade. I bought one for $40 used still in the box that was never used by an older couple. I figured since it was so cheap why not and add it to my collection. Like the Meade it had decent glass in the optical tube but the diagonal, mount and eyepieces were cheap. More shocking Celestron eyepieces in the Powerseeker series use Huygens type eyepieces! They are worse than MA Kellner eyepieces that Meade uses on their budget line. As long as you don't bump these cheap scopes moving or focusing they can provide a fair view once the image settles down. As I said you can do some things to improve the views. But as a first telescope I think many buyers would be happy with the budget scopes from Meade and they will also get better eyepieces than Celestron offers on their low end scopes. If a buyer remains interested they can always spend a bit more in the future for a better model from Meade, Celestron, TelaVue, Vixen, Orion, Takahashi, TAL, ...the list goes on. For the first time buyers thinking about these budget scopes you will definitely get your money's worth. They still will provide you with decent views of the larger/closer planets....the cloud bands around Jupiter, Saturns rings, fair views of the brighter Messier deep space objects like nebula, galaxies and very good views of open star clusters and some globular star clusters. I never get bored of any of my telescopes. High price ones or my budget finds.

Nice review, but seems pretty unforgiving to me. Comparing this scope to a "real" scope is apples to oranges. It is more useful to compare cheap scopes to other cheap scopes. In this instance, it is actually pretty decent. My first telescope was an Edmund Scientific kit with a wooden (wooden!) tripod and a cheap mirror. The tube was CARDBOARD and so was the eyepiece, which was basically a tiny toilet paper roll tube with a lens inside. The aperture of the tube was 4 inches. The mount was impossible to move smoothly or hold still. in 1978, it was actually around $60 dollars, which was a huge investment at the time. I could see the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter with it, and separate all sorts of binary systems and whatnot. Sure, it was crap, but it got the job done pretty well. This unit has most of what you would want in a complete budget portable scope. This is "a lot" better than my telescope in the olden days. A lot of the other scopes of around 90-100mm aperture do not come with tripods or barlow lenses. Anyway, this is lightweight, cheap, super easy to use, easy to put together, has correction for land viewing, and is very portable. It is not a high end telescope, but it is good for the price--especially if you want easy to use and the option of land viewing. Perfect grab and go scope for camping or back yard when ease of use and portability is important to you.

99% of people don't give a shit about the stuff picky astronomers whinge about on forums and the like. As long as it shows them the rings of Saturn etc. they are happy. I think its interesting that the 80mm version has a different dew shield, it looks like metal. Probably a re-packaged ST80. Plastic isn't bad as long as its strong. It doesn't heat up as much in my experience as metal does when using a telescope out in the hot weather viewing far off scenery or the Sun (warning, if you view the Sun, make sure you use a Sun Filter of the correct size). Good tutorial.

iqtpilot...Thank You! As to something else? Well I am not sure how to answer that. All my equipment is from Astro-Physics and are very costly. Today there are so many choices for you to look at from A to Z. I am a bit biased towards refractors. I have had two reflectors years ago but decided the refractor was my choice instrument. Remember, optics are the most important. Get good optics. You can always add better eyepieces and mount later. I know this doesn't answer as to "what" to suggest. I don't want to give my opinions on certain brands I have looked through as everyone has their own expectations of what is a good view. It might start a war :)

@@starastronomer I am still in the process of deciding whether stargazing is a hobby I want to take up. I had bought an inexpensive 114mm AltAzimuth Newtonian reflector scope (National Geographic/Bresser) which, along with your video, taught me the importance of eye piece quality and tripod/mount stability, among other considerations. I now realize that I will have to invest in much better (and pricier) equipment if I decide to pursue this as a hobby. Visiting a local Astronomy Club meeting will probably give me a better idea. Thanks again for your video!

retired...exactly, that's why I did the video. People ask me what they can get for very little money. The video will show them. Unfortunately you get little to nothing. I had a guy from church stop by a few weeks back who has an 8" Orion reflector telescope. I had my 175 Astro-Physics out. He wanted to know why my field of view was so wide. You are doing the right thing by going to a club and checking out scopes for yourself. As I said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One thing I may recommend is a small quality 60mm or 80mm refractor. Very portable and you won't have to worry about alignment issues. Of course aperture always rules and that isn't a large size but it allows you a smaller, less costly mount. Decisions, decisions :)

What telescope brands/specific telescopes would you say are worth looking in to for a "beginner" telescope? From reading your other replies it sounds like you are not too fond of celestron, meade, and I would also assume orion. But they seem to dominate the entry level telescopes though. Are there other telescopes that are a better deal for us that can't spend over 500$ to get in to the hobby? Also, if us new people to the hobby decide to eventually upgrade to a higher end scope in the range of 1,000-3,000$, what brands and or specific telescopes would you recommend looking at? Thanks

Test...sadly you are correct. Those are the big players because the prices are low. And you want scopes that people can afford, I understand that. In the old days scope brands like Celestron & Meade were built much better. Just look at almost everything today. As production cost rise to keep the prices down something has to give. You can't keep the same quality materials and procedures without raising costs to the customer. One of the problems with Celestron & Meade is QC. You may get a "decent" scope, you may not. As I said in the video you need to look at various scopes from local astro clubs. Know the return policy before you buy any scope. Test them on a star, not your neighbors chimney. Just as an example. I use refractors from Astro-Physics. They are not "mass produced". Each scope or mount for that matter is put together and tested. The machining is beyond meticulous. See this as an example kzitem.info/news/bejne/12mM1oVtrpGjqHY The scope you see in this video was on an almost 15 year wait list!!! Now, I do understand an adult starting out does not want to spend that kind of money nor should they. A waste of money should you decide the hobby of astronomy is not for you. BUT, on the other had if you get one with poor optics and mount the adult might be put off thinking they are all like that. People I run into locally have told me [without me asking them] the very same issues I show in this video. So their scopes sit in a closet or in a landfill. It's a vicious circle. Hopefully you know what to look for and when you do buy a scope you can determine if it is correct for you. BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER.

@@starastronomer Thanks for the reply. I would love to look through some other scopes at my local astronomy club, but unfortunately their next meetup is in 266 days... That astro-physics fit is absolutely amazing. That things a work of art. The only thing I've ever had that made a pop from the air moving during disassembly and reassembly is something that I machined myself, which I think was about +- .001", so to see that from a manufactured part is crazy. Especially in an extruded piece of aluminum. But you better get something absolutely perfect for that hefty price tag haha! Since it sounds like I'll be waiting a while to visit my local astro club, do you have any recommendations of brands steer clear from, and ones to try out? I'm just looking for something to begin with that will let me and my brother see the close/large planets with some moderate clarity and be able to mess around looking and taking photos of some of the brighter deep sky objects. I'm also not afraid of aligning some mirrors, I've done stuff similar. Also, I live on the edge of town, 30 mins will get us to incredibly low light pollution. I would love to get something like a tele-vue 76 or 85mm telescope, but I think I'll have to hold off for a year or two until I see if I really enjoy astronomy to pull the trigger on something in that price range. Any ideas on something I (hopefully) wouldn't grow out of for a year or two? How about explore scientific? I know you can't tell me what exact telescope to buy because that's like telling someone what kind of car they need, but if you have any advice in what direction I should focus my attention, that would be great. Here is a review of three different series from TV I did kzitem.info/news/bejne/1qqu4JqsbGl0enY I would recommend when you buy eyepieces buy the best you can. You can always change telescope brands and designs but an eyepiece can last a lifetime through all those changes.

@@starastronomer I decided to come back and watch this video again after now doing astronomy both on the hobbyist level, and as undergraduate research in college. Also, as you recommended, I did go to the first star party my local astronomy club hosted. I along with a few others, actually restarted the university's astronomy club about a month ago. The primary telescopes we have been using are various forms of Celestron SCTs, William Optics 61mm, and a 16" cassegrain telescope made by DFM engineering. All have been great for their own respective use cases. Even the "cheap" 6 inch Celestron SCTs (fantastic for their very minimal learning curve). As a broke high school student, watching your video 2 years ago was somewhat discouraging. I didn't see a way to get into the hobby without spending obscene amounts of money since all of your recommendations were in the $4K-$10K range, just for the OTA. Fortunately though, I was given a 9.25" celestron by a family member since they no longer used it. I get that this is a telescope you would never recommend (presumably since it is Chinese and cheaply made), but it is some of the most fun I have ever had. I've introduced probably a half dozen people to the hobby with it, and have had countless hours of fun with friends and family looking through it. I get that you have been blessed with the opportunity to enjoy beautiful American made optical masterpieces, but not all of us are in the financial situation to do so. If you consider making another review like this, I think you should consider looking at a small dobsonian in the same price range. John Dobson was an absolute genius at designing affordable, smooth moving telescope mounts. Like you stated in the review, the mount was the main issue, which is why a similar review with a dobsonian mount telescope would be great I believe. Instead of scaring people away from astronomy (like this video almost did for me two years ago), it might help bring some people to this incredible hobby. Also the one other thing I think could be stressed a lot more in this video is, there is an enormous used market for really nice telescopes and mounts where really nice things can be bought for really cheap. I recently acquired a Losmandy G11 for $250, and the only work it needed was re-greasing. This is another great way for newcomers to make it in to the hobby without spending all of their money. Just my 2 cents.
@starastronomer
2 жыл бұрын
Test I just for some reason found your message from about a month ago. Congratulations on doing undergraduate research in college! First, let me say that $250 for an equatorial G11 mount is a steal. I have 3 G11 tripods, a GM8 tripod, and an AZ8 tripod all from Losmandy and I love them. I used to have a G11 EQ mount and liked it a lot and would highly recommend that mount to anyone. I certainly didn't want to give the impression in my review that I am rich or "stuck up" as to astronomy equipment. Believe me I'm neither. And it wasn't meant to scare people off either (that wasn't my intent). I don't care where a scope is manufactured as long as QUALTY CONTROL is part of that process. Sadly it isn't for some scopes. I have never in all my years in the hobby been happy with the Cassegrain telescope designs by "C" or "M". They give soft images and have mirror flop. But that's just me. Many people may not notice or even care about that. I need a scope that has "tight" high contrast images. Not everyone may need this requirement. I can't say in any of my KZitem reviews something I don't believe in. Perhaps that is not a good thing but I do not want to give a false impression of what I am seeing and reviewing. So many people have told me how they lost interest in the wonderful hobby of astronomy solely because of poor optics and wobbly mounts. And people would ask me what they could buy for $100 to $250. Most don't want to pay more than that so I did the video on the $220 scope. I purposely chose the refractor design as the majority of people may not know how to or want to make collimation adjustments of the mirrors. A refractor is pretty much grab and go. It's all about enjoying the scope you have. Also, it's not that I would only recommend $$$$$$ scopes it's just that I wouldn't recommend something I don't believe in. In all fairness I am a VERY picky person when it comes to optics and the mechanics of a scope. Going to a star party (as you did and I recommended) is what each prospective telescope buyer should do. "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" as they say. Years ago at a total lunar eclipse public viewing no one came to look through my small 4" Astro-Physics refractor on an Alt-Az mount. Everyone was at the large Dob's or Cassegrain telescopes setup. A lady came by and asked if she could have a look, of course I said. She gasped at the view and told me my scope had the best images of any she had looked through that evening. Soon I had a long line. I agree with you Test that John Dobson changed the hobby of astronomy forever with his masterful design, the "Dob" mount. I may buy one to review as you requested. I am currently working on a review for a refractor from Celestron. Good Lord, I may not want to finish it. When you see it you will know why. The review of the Meade I did (as I stated) was hurt in a big way from the mount. I couldn't wait to finish the review. BTW, I tried to give it away on my Facebook page to a youngster. The catch, they had to write a letter to me as to why they wanted it. They were to send it to me by mail without a name or return address. I did not want to know who sent it. I would announce the winner on my FB page. Do you know not one response! Kids today don't want anything that they may need a brain to use. Sad. I ended up giving it away to a buddy of mine and he likes it. I just didn't want to throw it out if someone could use it. I thank you for your input Test. It helps me and everyone that reads these comments. Before I forget, as to that 16" Cassegrain telescope made by DFM engineering, I'll glad take that bad boy, oh yeah! Clear skies and enjoy the hobby!!!

Depends on what you buy. The more money you spend the better the mount [sturdier, better tracking, etc.] and scope/optics SHOULD be. Most companies have lower cost scopes for those that don't want to spend too much but yet they have something to view the sky with. The higher cost scopes are for those that require better performance. Companies try provide the customer with a range of prices to choose from.

Well Zeen, to be honest I do not have much experience with those companies to give you a solid answer. I have been using Astro Physics refractors for many years. I can't say I have looked through an Orion reflector before. I have owned two reflectors in the past. An Edmund 4.25" when I was a kid then later got a 12.5" Star Liner reflector. Since then as I have said Astro Physics has been my telescopes of choice. Would be nice if you had a local astro club to see if they have similar equipment. I just don't want to give you information that may not be of any value on those brands.

One has to take all this for what it is. The company that sells this has to make money on it. A pair of eye glasses at the optometrist will start at around 220 dollars. A single good eyepiece can be 400 dollars. If this equip is not fit for purpose at this price well so be it. Poorer folk on tight budgets can get into a less expensive hobby like kick the can. Not everyone can pop 500 bucks for better gear. If you CAN afford better then you probably should, rather than buying this to save a few bucks. If you can't afford better then you make do, or find another hobby. People making these sorts of video's should really (in my opinion) make it clear that if you cant spend "x" on a hobby then you can't afford to be in the hobby.
@starastronomer

percussion 44...as clearly stated in my review the intent of my video was only to show people what $200 buys them in a telescope. It was NOT to tell some how much to spend. That is up to each individual what they can afford, not mine. I get people who ask me "what scope should I buy"? Of course most only want to spend a couple hundred. I bought this scope to do a review that would show what a typical $200 scope gets you. If the individual is okay with it fine. My video just points out the "weak" areas. You would be surprised how many people tell me "I have a scope in my closet". When asked why they all will tell me the pitfalls I describe in my video review. This is my 50th year in the hobby and I must have high end equipment. I have looked through many different scopes from various manufacturer's in that time. I know what companies to stay away from; BELIEVE ME. And no, I won't state which ones. BUT, not everyone wants to spend $$$$ on equipment. It's their choice, not mine. What I state in the video at about 1:56 is the absolute truth. This is why I spent almost 4 minutes in the beginning alerting people what to look for. I had one guy who told me there is nothing wrong with the scope and he does astrophotography with his. He further states I needed to redo the review. His comment never up on MY page. One reason I always have to okay any comments. His remark told me volumes. No way was he doing astrophotography unless it is of a "snapshot" nature with an ALT/AZ mount.

John A...I looked up what a "Celestron Omni xlt 120" is as I don't use that brand [nor Meade for that matter]. Glad it works out for you. A laser pointer [in my experience] is useless for pinpointing an object. A finder scope is the best option. In my introduction I stated clearly to check out telescopes firsthand at star parties. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! Determine what works for you. A reflector is USELESS to a novice and if they get a cheaply made one the issues they have are numerous indeed. A quality, well made refractor is going to give better views that the cheap reflector. And sadly so many reflectors available today are poorly made. Anyone with experience will tell you that. I have been into the hobby 51 years and have seen the quality plummet from what it used to be. I myself only use telescopes from Astro-Physics, Telescope Engineering Company, or TeleVue. The most important thing is to be happy with the scope you use. Each individual determines quality standards themselves. John, if you ever looked through a high end scope you would understand and have something in which to compare scopes and mounts to. I have seen many examples over the years. Clear skies John!!!

Hello! I have never written anything on KZitem before, so I hope I'm doing this right... Long story short, I have four youngsters (8 y/o - 13 y/o) who are amateur astronomers (we go to night Ranger Programs at National Parks when we visit them, we watch meteor showers and eclipses, they've learned constellations and I have a laser pointer they love, we go to planetariums / observatories, they ask for space stuff for Christmas, etc.), and they have asked me in the past to consider getting a telescope for them. I'm a single dad with a tight budget, so it's been something I've been reluctant to do, which, I'm sure you can understand. Recently I found out that Costco has the Meade S 102 on sale for what seems to be a reasonable price given its reputation and what other telescopes like it can cost... I came across this review as I was looking into it more (and am grateful for your work - thanks!) and had a few basic questions for you. Is the Meade S102 essentially the same as the Meade Infinity 102 AZ (it seems like the Costco version may have fewer lenses, but I'm unclear...)? Given what little I've told you, would you say it's worth the splurge (the sale is $160 for the next few weeks while supplies last...)? Do you still have the telescope you bought, and if so, would you be interested in selling it to me at a price better than Costco? Do you have any advice for me regarding helping my kids along their astronomical journey? : ) Thanks for your thoughts - I really appreciate anything you can teach me!
@starastronomer

A J...thanks for looking at my video and hope it helped! Now, as to the Meade S 102, I am not familiar with Meade products all that well. So glad to hear your four youngsters like astronomy. A great hobby to get into. A telescope is certainly better than no telescope :) I would buy it and see how well it works for you. Remember to see what the return policy is at Costco for the reasons I stated in my video before you buy the telescope. As to the price of $160, if the scope gives nice views I'd say it is a good purchase. Without actually getting the scope and using it one never knows. I ended up giving my reviewed scope to someone for free. Sounds like your kids have got it under control from what they are doing and learning. Starting out young is good. I got into the hobby at 10 years old and am now 59 years young. I say go for it, get the scope. Your kids will love it. Learning the sky and learning to use the scope is the first step. Down the road they can always upgrade should their interest grow and stay with them. The very best of luck!

However, I decided that since I had planned to also use it to stir an interest of astronomy in my grandkids, I thought that the Meade Infinity 102 AZ might suffice. Not now.
