When I played snare, drums majors told me they listened us the whole show. Have tons of respect for tenors and basses too, that stuff isn't easy. But I alway envied the pit, not having to march or practice outside all day...but they can still do things I can't as a battery player.

Pits music is ALWAYS harder then everyone else's because they don't have to march which is why composers make their music more challenging because they get to only focus on perfecting their music

At the time, it was common practice for everyone’s snare drums to be at the same height, so if you were short, you kinda had to have the drum up high

Im sure it is not the same everywhere but from my experience the drum major watches and goes with the tempo of the percussion or watches feet of the section that is controlling tempo at that particular moment of the show..

Another good reason is that they are very impractical. Cymbal sound is generally from. They only really serve a visual purpose which is fulfilled by the guard. But hey, personal opinion here :)

The drum major gets the tempo off of the snare line? When did that start? Or is it just a Cadets thing? Over the years I was involved (83-91) in band and corps, the drum major set the tempo. I would think there's a greater chance of phasing if the snare line sets the tempo, the major picks it up and translates it to the rest of the corps. Dutting........ we didn't do it in any of the 5 groups I was involved with (whether it was as a member or instructor). Would have nailed us for points. Though that may have been the circuits we were in. I think there's too much chance of it being heard beyond the field. For lack of a better word, we would sometimes "sis". It sounded like a snake, didn't carry far and you actually could sub divide the beat.
@darthvader9969

The drum major sets the tempo and watches the drumline's feet to keep that tempo. Dutting has become a major part of drumline in the past decade or so. If you watch any of the snare or tenor headcams, you can clearly hear most of, if not all, the drumline dutting.

I hate it when drumlines do that. The height of the actual drum isn't scored. You should set your drum at YOUR comfortable playing level, not just whatever height the center has his/hers at. I would know. I've always been the smallest in my drumline, and I'm center snare this year. :D
